We’ll explore the wealth of geological phenomena this vast area has to offer at a delightful time of year, while staying within a lush oasis. On board throughout this tour is geographer, Dennis Napier, who from the beginning of the tour will begin to educate on the areas we are passing through and our destination, Death Valley. Today we’ll be on the look-out for wildflowers as this is the time of year that wildflowers in Death Valley are most likely (note that mother nature is at work here and the rains during the fall and winter prior will determine what flowers there are to see). This morning we’ll travel to Ubehebe Crater, the largest in a series of craters found in the area. Around 6,000 years ago a powerful volcanic explosion created this crater which is half a mile in diameter and more than 500 feet deep. We’ll pass by the remains of the road that leads to Scotty’s Castle which was destroyed in a massive flood in late 2015 and won’t be rebuilt until at least 2019! Returning to the Furnace Creek area we’ll enjoy an included lunch at The Inn at Furnace Creek. An elegant hideaway since 1927, The Inn at Furnace Creek is known as the “Jewel of Death Valley.” This four-diamond resort is one of the National Park system’s premier historic hotels. This afternoon we’ll visit the National Park Visitor Center, enjoy the views of Manly Beacon from Zabriskie Point. We’ll also visit Harmony Borax Works to learn how Borax was discovered in this area, how 20-mule teams transported it and what importance Borax still has to the world today. We return to the Ranch in the late afternoon with the balance of the day at leisure. (Breakfast, Lunch) Ubehebe Crater Ranch at Furnace Creek DAY 3 ~ DEPART DEATH VALLEY After an included breakfast buffet, we’ll make our way out of Death Valley and travel past the massive sand dunes near Stovepipe Wells as we depart via the western exit of the Park on our way towards Southern California. Several rest stops and a stop for lunch on your own will be made before we arrive back at our drop-off points in the evening.
