Determining meanings of derivatives by applying knowledge
of the meanings of root words and affixes
A derivative is a word made by adding parts to a root word. When you meet
a derivative you don’t know, looking at its parts will help you figure out its
meaning.
Here are the terms you need to know:
Root word or base word: the word to which parts may be added.
Affix: a part added to the root word. Affixes include prefixes and suffixes.
Prefix: a part attached to the beginning of a word.
Suffix: a part added after the root word.
How derivatives work:
Suffixes change a word’s form. For example, the suffix -ly changes an adjective
to an adverb: quick to quickly. The suffix -ment changes a verb to a noun:
agree to agreement.

Prefixes change a
word’s meaning because
prefixes have their own
meanings. Here are some
common ones.
A word map is
a useful tool for
analyzing word
parts. Study the
word map for the
word prehistory,
shown here. Then
make your own
map for the
word review.
