More than 1,200 martial artists from across the United States and several other countries attended a banquet in the ballroom of the Tropicana Hotel in Atlantic City and many were honored for their contribution to the martial arts. Schiller was recognized for his dedication to the martial arts for more than 15 years and was nominated by his chief instructor in Combat Hapkido, Grand Master John Pellegrini {right). Schiller resides in Lake Placid and teaches at the Lake Placid Martial Arts Academy on Main Street. Area skiers prep for NYSPHSAA meet NOELLE SHORT NEWS SPORTS WRITER TURIN - When the New York State High School Athletic Association Alpine Ski Championships come to Whiteface Mountain Ski Center on Feb. 27 and 28, there will be 19 athletes from Saranac Lake and Lake Placid who won't have to travel very far to compete. While .both teams will field individual racers, the Blue Bombers will also represent Section VII in the boys and girls team competition, due to the fact that both Lake Placid squads earned won the Section VII Championship on Feb. 10 and 11 at Snow Ridge Mountain in Turin. The Lake Placid girls team, which will be defending its 2006 team state championship title, will feature Section VII's top-ranked slalom racer Leigh Anne Connors, as well as Eliza Holes, Caitlin Scufka and Jillian Locke. "That's going to be difficult to repeat - I don't know if any team has done it," said Lake Placid coach Bob Birk of a repeat team title in 2007. "You have to be very good and very lucky, because anything can happen. These kids are going as fast as they can go and pushing it to the limit. You can stand up and win and you can crash — you never know. We will just go out and ski our best." In addition, Lake Placid's Alex McFadden and Maria Anderson will. compete for individual girls honors. Aimee Caligiore qualified for the competition, but will be unable to participate due to an injury. •The Bomber's boys squad will be led by Christian Blazer, who is ranked first in Section VII for both the giant slalom and slalom events. Blazer will be joined by teammates Ian Mcmullen, Andrew Baird and William Tennant. Saranac Lake's skiers will be led by Lauren Burgess, who is ranked first in Section VII for the giant slalom, while Tabatha Leahy, Katie Madden and Kendra Leonadis will also compete for the Red Storm. On the boys side, Sean Ryan, K.C. Brousseau, Nick Dora, Peter Madden and Chris Schrope will represent Saranac Lake in the gates. "It's really fun to have it back at Whiteface," Birk said of his team's home mountain hosting the race.
