TURIN - When the New
York State High School Athletic Association Alpine Ski
Championships come to Whiteface Mountain Ski Center on
Feb. 27 and 28, there will be
19 athletes from Saranac Lake
and Lake Placid who won't
have to travel very far to compete.
While .both teams will field
individual racers, the Blue
Bombers will also represent
Section VII in the boys and
girls team competition, due to
the fact that both Lake Placid
squads earned won the Section
VII Championship on Feb. 10
and 11 at Snow Ridge Mountain in Turin.
The Lake Placid girls team,
which will be defending its
2006 team state championship
title, will feature Section VII's
top-ranked slalom racer Leigh
Anne Connors, as well as Eliza
Holes, Caitlin Scufka and Jillian Locke.
"That's going to be difficult
to repeat - I don't know if any
team has done it," said Lake
Placid coach Bob Birk of a
repeat team title in 2007. "You
have to be very good and very
lucky, because anything can
happen. These kids are going as
fast as they can go and pushing
it to the limit. You can stand up
and win and you can crash —
you never know. We will just
go out and ski our best."
In addition, Lake Placid's
Alex McFadden and Maria
Anderson will. compete for
individual girls honors. Aimee
Caligiore qualified for the competition, but will be unable to
participate due to an injury.
•The Bomber's boys squad
will be led by Christian Blazer,
who is ranked first in Section
VII for both the giant slalom
and slalom events. Blazer will
be joined by teammates Ian
Mcmullen, Andrew Baird and
William Tennant.
Saranac Lake's skiers will be
led by Lauren Burgess, who is
ranked first in Section VII for
the giant slalom, while Tabatha
Leahy, Katie Madden and
Kendra Leonadis will also
compete for the Red Storm.
On the boys side, Sean Ryan,
K.C. Brousseau, Nick Dora,
Peter Madden and Chris
Schrope will represent Saranac
Lake in the gates.
"It's really fun to have it
back at Whiteface," Birk said
of his team's home mountain
hosting the race. "We've been
at Bristol Mountain for the last
two years where they have
done a really nice job, but it's
awful nice to come back home
and ski at Whiteface."

WINTERBERG, Germany
- Steven Holcomb and his
four-man bobsled team tied the
track record and finished with
the silver medal, just O.03 seconds from gold, at Sunday's
fiercely competitive World Cup
event in Winterberg, Germany.
Grayson Fertig raced in his
second ever four-man World
Cup competition, placing 14th,
"We were all skeptical going
into the race today, because we
weren't quick in four-man

coach Brian Shimer said. "It's
easy to get down, but hard to be

Uhlaender claims gold at Winterberg race
WINTERBERG, Germany
- The U.S. team claimed three
of the top six finishes on
Friday, Feb. 16 at a women's
skeleton World Cup race in
Winterberg, Germany, claiming the gold and bronze medals.
Despite learning about a serious ski accident her brother
, was in, Katie Uhlaender obliterated the track record on her
first run, sealing her overall
World Cup lead by winning her
.fifth gold medal this season.
2007 World Champion
.Noelle Pikus-Pace finished
with the bronze, maintaining

Holcomb teamed with one of
the fastest push crews, in the
world, Payle Jovanovic, Steve
Meslef and Brock Kreitzburg,
almost tying the start record set
in the first heat by Russian
Evgeni Popov's team.
Popov's crew pushed a 5.06
start time, while Holcomb's
crew pushed a 5.07.
"Steve's team was one-hundredth off at the start, but by the
next timing eye they were
three-hundredths ahead," Shimer said. "The team did their
job and had great velocity, so
they were really the best start
crew on the hill today."
The hundredth of a second at
the start made no difference at
the finish, as both teams tied
with a track-record time of
55.37 seconds in the first heat.
Holcomb was first of the two
teams to push off in the second
heat,finishingwith a 55.74 for
a combined time of 1:51.11.
Popov crossed thefinishline in
55.71, only 0.03 seconds
ahead of Holcomb, to claim the
gold.
Rohbock, Fleming
win third stiver
In Winterberg, Germany, Shauna Rohbock and
Valerie Fleming refused a
sweep of the medals by the
Germans on their home territory by claiming silver at
Saturday's women's bobsled
World Cup event in Winterberg, Germany.
"I'm, very happy with
Shauna's performance today,"
women's bobsled head coach
Sepp Plozza said. "I did not
have much confidence coming
into the race because training
all week has been on and off,
but race day is always different."
Germans Sandra Kiriasis and
Cathleen Martini were in a
three-way tie with Rohbock for
first in overall World Cup
points entering Saturday's race.
With only one event remaining, today was more than a battle for the medals, but a fierce
competition for rights to the
overall title.
Kiriasis dominated her home

Said's late father competed
at the 1968 and 1972 Winter
Olympics as a bobsled athlete,
giving Said a hereditary edge
over his race-car competitors
on the ice at Mount Van Hoevenberg in Lake Placid.
"The most fun I had at the
Bodine Challenge was actually
getting a chance to watch the
U.S. men and women slide,"
Said remarked. "T.V. doesn't
do the sport justice, because
you don't see the athleticism it

energy, so it was really cool to ,
