During a bioprocess, the CO2 produced can be used to control the bioprocess or to evaluate the growth process of the culture. The CO2 sensor can measure the (absolute) CO2 concentration of a gaseous sample. The principle of the measurement is spectrophotometric by measuring the absorption of infrared light at two wavelengths the percentage CO2 is measured. The measuring range of the sensor is up to 10% CO2 (vol/vol%) within the temperature range of 15-40˚C. The element is heated up to 560˚C. This type of sensor is based on the principle of an oxygen pump cell and therefor independent of reference gasses. The sensor simply is calibrated with ambient air. With an oxygen pump cell, voltage and current are applied and in such a cell the limiting current is proportional to the oxygen concentration of the sample flow.
