The following Civics/Eastern Shore lesson plan is designed to serve as a template that can be adapted for learners of various levels. You may need to simplify some of the material or make it more complicated. Choose the activities listed in each section that best suit your learners’ needs, or design your own. The National Bird of the United States is the American Bald Eagle. It was adopted as the National Bird in 1782. Where do most bald eagles live? Most bald eagles live in Canada and Alaska but some live on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. One half of the 100,000 bald eagles alive today live in Alaska. No. They live in small groups, and they usually keep the same mate for life. Couples often sit together in trees. How old are female bald eagles when they start laying eggs? Female bald eagles are 4-5 years old when they start laying eggs. They lay 2-3 eggs a year. Where do bald eagles keep their eggs? They keep them in large nests that they build from twigs. When eagles see a fish in the water, they dive down and grab it with their sharp claws. The bald eagle is protected by the government. It is illegal (against the law) to injure, disturb, or capture a bald eagle, or take its eggs, nests or feathers. On the Shore bald eagles can be seen flying, perching in trees, and sometimes in fields eating dead animals. Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge to the north and Kiptopeke State Park to the south are good places to see bald eagles. Bald Eagle Photos A. Reading Alfonzo is going to the Eastern Shore of Virginia with his father. His father is a nature photographer. He takes photos of wild animals for a popular magazine in Mexico. The magazine Alfonzo’s father works for wants photos of wild bald eagles building nests, flying, catching fish, and eating. Alfonzo’s father is a serious photographer, and he doesn’t want Alfonzo to be a nuisance while he is working. He wants him to stay at the hotel and play or go to the beach. If you have a large class they can discuss there results in small groups and then report back to the class. You could draw a large information grid on the board to compile the results. Information Gap Activity Copy and cut the three versions of the story. Have learners work in pairs. Give one learner A and the other B. They will take turns reading every other sentence, with B reading the first sentence. As B reads A will fill in the blanks, reversing the procedure for the second sentence, and so on. When they are finished give them the completed version so they can check their answers. You can simplify the story (or make it more complicated) according to the level of your learners.
