Radioactivity • After Pierre and Marie married they both began joint research on the phenomenon of radioactivity. • In 1896 after a scientist’s conclusion of that uranium salts emit spontaneous radiation Marie found that thorium has got same features and is even more active than uranium. • Curies worked with material from the famous uranium mine in Czech Bohemia ‐ uranium pitchblende, which in pure state is about four times more active than uranium oxide. • radioactive elements ‐ polonium and radThe conclusion they made was that pitchblende contains at least two new ium. Prizes • Both received the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1903 – Marie was the first woman honored with this prize. • Marie became the first woman received the title "Doctor of Sciences" of the University of Paris. • Royal Society of London awarded both with medal "Davy“. • In 1904 Curies received medals "Mateuchi " from the Italian Academy of Sciences. • In 1911 Marie received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry ‐ she became the first scientist honored twice with the Nobel Prize. • On 19th of April 1906 comes the biggest shock of Marie’s life, Pierre Curie died in traffic accident. • After the death of Pierre, Marie Curie served as a head of the department at the University of Paris. • In 1914 she became director of the Radium Institute (now the Institute "Curie " ) in Paris . • She founded the initiative “Open doors” in 1918 in Radium Institute, supporting research in the field of chemistry, physics and medicine. • She also founded the Radium Institute and Warsaw. • She died on 4 July 1934 at the sanatorium of Sancellemoz, France.
