Welcome to the Windsor Library. Now that we have moved into our new
building, we are able to bring you expanded services and new oppotunities.
A. We have added many new titles to our books and periodical collection. You can use
your old library card at the new facility, and the check-out rules remain the same. You
may keep books and magazines for four weeks, and videos and CDs for one week.
You will be fined if materials are not returned on time.
B. We are always adding to our collection of picture books and beginning readers for the
title ones. We now have a story hour twice a week, on Monday and Wednesday
afternoons. There is also a special film series for ages 5-8 on the first Saturday of
every month.
C. We continue to have free internet access available to all Windsor Public Library card
holders. Computers are also available to library patrons for word processing and other
needs, and we have tutorials on using the world wide web, basic word processing and
beginning keyboarding.
D. Don’t forget to pick up your monthly events brochure at the check-out desk. We have
a new film series as well as book singings by local authors and occasional concerts by
both visiting and local musicians.
E. The new library has several conference rooms available to library patrons. If you
would like to reserve a room for your group or club, please inquire at the check-out
desk.
F. There are a number of library staff positions available. If you are interested in working
at the library, please ask for a job application at the Human Resources office.

The Space Race

In 1957, Russia launched a small metal ball, Sputnik, into space. As it circled the
Earth, it did nothing but send a simple radio message back to Earth. That message,
however, was enough to frighten the Americans badly. The Russians were winning the
space race. But what was the space race? Very simply, it was a race to see which country
could get into space first. Both Russia and the United States wanted to win very much.
With Sputnik, Russia won the first part of the race, but the next stage, putting a man into
space, was far more important to both countries.
The American program to put a man into space was the Mercury program. The
Americans chose Alan Shepard, a Navy test pilot, to be their first astronaut. They called
his mission Mercury Freedom 7. Shepard went through months of training for his
mission.
Meanwhile, the engineers and scientists tested every part of his spaceship to make
sure it was safe. Finally, in 1961, after the Americans safely sent a monkey into space,
they were ready to send Shepard. In the last week of February, Shepard’s Redstone
rocket was on the launch pad, but a last minute problem meant that they could not launch.
They rescheduled the launch for May 5. Then on April 12, the Americans received
terrible news. Yuri Gagarin, a Russian, was in space. The Russians had beaten the
Americans again.

+ Thân bài: Phân tích vai trò quan trọng của máy vi tính trong cuộc sống
hằng ngày như phục vụ ngành công nghiệp, nông nghiệp, dịch vụ du lịch,
thương mại, ngân hàng, bưu điện, giáo dục, y tế, quốc phòng, an ninh... phục vụ
