Part II: Sentence Structure 1. What is a clause? Group of related words that have a subject and a verb 2. What is an independent clause? A clause that is a complete thought (main clause) 3. What is a dependent clause? Clause that is NOT a complete thought (subordinate clause) 4. What is a subordinating conjunction? Words that turn independent clauses into dependent clauses 5. What is a connective adverb? Words that connect two independent clauses to form CD2 sentences 6. A simple sentence = Independent clause + capital letter + appropriate end mark + complete thought 7. A fragment is an incomplete sentence (missing capital letter, end mark, complete thought, subject, verb) 8. A compound sentence is two or more independent clauses joined together correctly 9. The three ways to form a compound sentence are: CD1 = IND + COMMA + FANBOYS + IND CD2 = IND + SEMICOLON (;) + CONNECTIVE ADVERB + COMMA + IND CD3 = IND + SEMICOLON (;) + IND 10. A run-on sentence is two or more independent clauses written together incorrectly 11. A comma splice is two or more independent clauses joined by only a comma 12. A complex sentence is an independent clause and a dependent clause joined together correctly 13. The two ways to form a complex sentence are: CX1 = DEP + COMMA + IND CX2 = IND + DEP Part III: Progressive and Perfect Tense Verbs 1. What is a verb tense? Shows when the action takes place (the time of the verb) 2. The 4 principal parts of a verb are: 1. Present (infinitive) - base form of the verb (the “dictionary” form) 2. Present participle - base form + -ing 3. Past - base form + -ed ; may also be irregular 4. Past participle - base form + -ed ; may also be irregular 3. In what order are the principal parts of the verb listed in the dictionary? Past tense, past participle (if irregular), present participle, 3rd person singular present 4. What is perfect tense? Action that is completed or will be completed at a specific time 1. Present perfect is formed by adding has/have to the past participle 2. Past perfect is formed by adding had to the past participle 3. Future perfect is formed by adding will have to the past participle 5. What is progressive tense? Action that is not yet completed (on going / continuous) 1. Present progressive is formed by adding am/is/are to the present participle 2. Past progressive is formed by adding was/were to the present participle 3. Future progressive is formed by adding will be to the present participle Part IV: Parts of Speech and Sentence Labeling 1. What are the four types of sentences? Exclamatory, interrogative, imperative, declarative 2. Be able to identify a prepositional phrase in a sentence. 3. Be able to identify the simple subject of a sentence (including understood you). 4. Be able to identify the complete subject of a sentence. 5. Be able to identify the simple predicate of a sentence. 6. Be able to identify the complete predicate of a sentence. 7. Be able to identify the adjectives in a sentence. 8. Be able to identify the adverbs in a sentence. 9. Be able to identify the articles in a sentence. 10. Recognize the order of a sentence as either natural, inverted, or as having an adverb exception.
