Word Web Activity for Is Lena Pretty?
Grade Level: 2nd+ Objectives: Vocabulary extension activity. Recognize synonyms. Utilize literary tools such as a thesaurus. Introduction of word mapping and concept maps. Visualization learning. Spatial reasoning and relationships. Practice respectful verbal communication and public speaking skills*. Suggested Materials: Thesaurus, colored pencils or markers Instuctions: Have students create word webs. See example below. Encourage the use of shapes and colors, as visual cues lend to student retention. Instruct students to place their name in the middle of the page inside a shape. Ask them to place 5 positive words about themselves as branches off the center name circle. After they have completed this step, have them pass their paper to their left. The next student should add a word describing that person to their web in a different color. If the word is not already represented on the page they may draw a branch off the name circle. If the word is already present they make look up a synonym in their thesaurus. If the word they want to use is a synonym they may add a branch off of the synonym already present. Have this continue until your students get their own papers back. Have the students analyze their word webs. How many branches are off their name circle? How many were added by classmates? Which word had the most synonyms attached? What does this tell them about their self-‐reflections and self-‐concept? Did others agree? Or were there other positive attributes about themselves they had not noticed? © 2015 www.lizadora.com
