Lesson Goal: The children will learn that we are all part of one body and every part is important. Main Point: Everybody Is Important! Bible Lesson: The Body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:12-31) Bible Verse: “Just as our bodies have many parts and each part has a special function, so it is with Christ’s body. We are many parts of one body, and we all belong to each other.” Romans 12:4-5 (NLT) Atom Stacker (Opening Activity) This activity will reinforce the theme of the series and will engage the children’s attention as they enter the room. Build A Body Relay (Alternate Opening Activity) This activity will introduce the children to the idea that as Christians we are all part of one body. Skit And Bible Lesson (Large Group Activity) The children will learn that we are all part of one body and every part is important. Bible Formula (Small Group Activity) This activity will get the children into their Bibles and help them review the Bible Verse for the week. Science Journal (Small Group Activity) This activity will help the children review the Main Point, Bible Lesson and Bible Verse. Body Pictures (Small Group Activity) This activity will show the children that as a part of the body of Christ, they each have things they should do. Each Part Is Important (Small Group Activity) This activity will show the children that there are no unimportant parts in the body of Christ. Whole Body Relay (Small Group Activity) This activity will teach the children that all of the body parts are needed so that the body can work its best. Experiments With Dr. Oppenheimerstein (Review Activity) This activity is a strategic time to review and reinforce the content of the lesson. © 2015 Elevate Atom Stacker OPENING ACTIVITY LESSON 8 Purpose: This activity will reinforce the theme of the series and will engage the children’s attention as they enter the room. Description: One child will hold a stack of six plastic cups while another child holds a cup filled with atoms (ping pong balls). The child with the cup of atoms will pass a ping pong ball to their teammate who will then bounce the ping pong ball off of the ground and try to catch it in his or her stack of cups. Once the atoms lands in the top cup, the child will move the cup with the ping pong ball to the bottom of the stack. Eventually, the stack will become wobbly. Whichever team gets an atom in all of their cups first, is the winner. Materials Needed: For this activity you will need this Help Sheet, three plastic cups filled with ping pong balls, at least eighteen plastic cups, in stacks of six, and the Opening Activity media elements from the Lesson 8 MediaShout® or ProPresenter® File. Note: Play the Doors Open Music when the children begin to enter the room. To introduce this activity, say the following: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. Let’s get started! This activity is called Atom Stacker. We are going to have two volunteers from each team come up on stage. One of you will hold a cup that is filled with atoms (also known as ping pong balls) and the other will hold a stack of six cups without atoms. If you are holding the cup with atoms, it is your job to hand the atoms, one at a time, to your teammate with the stack of cups. If you are holding the stack of cups without atoms, it is your job to take the atom from your teammate, bounce the atom off of the ground, then catch the atom in the cup that is at the top of your stack. Once you catch an atom, move the top cup to the bottom of the stack and continue until you have an atom in every cup. As the stack gets taller, it will be more difficult to catch the atoms. The first team to get an atom in every cup of their stack will be the winner. Note: Choose two volunteers from each team. One to hold the stack of cups and the other to hand off the atoms. Once the round is complete, choose two more volunteers from each team, and play again. For detailed instructions on how to do this activity, see the Teacher/Co-Teacher Training Video. During the activity, say the following: 1. Are you ready? Kids, are you ready to cheer for your teammates? Okay! 2. Ready, Set, Go! Note: Play the Game Go Music. 3. Keep going! 4. Kids, keep cheering. 5. Great job! 1 © 2015 Elevate Atom Stacker OPENING ACTIVITY LESSON 8 6. Now it’s time for us to pick new volunteers and play again. Note: Reset the game and continue playing with new volunteers until it is time to start your children’s worship hour. After the activity, say the following: 1. Great job with that game! 2. Let’s get ready for our countdown to Adventures In Science! 2 © 2015 Elevate Alternate Opening Activity: Purpose: This activity will introduce the children to the idea that as Christians we are all part of one body. Description: Two or more teams of children will assemble a body from a pile of cut out body parts. Materials Needed: For this activity you will need this Help Sheet, the “Build A Body Relay Image” from the Lesson Materials Folder, and tacks or tape or some way to fix the parts to a wall or board. To introduce this activity, say the following: 1. Have you ever had to put something together before? (Yes.) 2. Today we are going to see how fast you can put together a little puzzle. 3. Let’s divide into teams. 4. You are going to run down to the pile of pieces and bring them back here to put them together on the wall. 5. Ask me if you need help. For detailed instructions on how to do this activity, see the Training Video. During the activity, say the following: 1. Get all the parts in the right places. 2. What does it look like we are building? (A person. A body.) After the activity, say the following: 1. The body is made up of a lot of parts, isn’t it? (Yes.) 2. The parts can all work together because they are connected. Summary: When we look at a body we know it is made of many parts. The Bible teaches us that as Christians we are all parts of one body. That is what we are going to be talking about today. © 2015 Elevate Waterproof Sand SCIENCE EXPERIMENT LESSON 8 Purpose: This activity will add a fun element to the service and will engage the children’s attention. Description: The children will watch an engaging experiment conducted by the Teacher and CoTeacher to capture the children’s attention and imagination. Materials Needed: For this activity you will need this Help Sheet, one package of Magic Sand®, regular sand of equal amount to Magic Sand®, two spoons, water, two small, clear containers, and one table to perform the experiment on. To introduce this activity at the beginning of service, say the following: 1. Today’s experiment is called Waterproof Sand! 2. It’s going to be great. Note: At the beginning of service the Teacher will come out from backstage whistling. Have the sand already poured into the containers (Magic Sand® in one container and regular sand in the other). Take the lid off of the two small containers. Once the Teacher has prepared the experiment, the Co-Teacher will enter and service will officially begin. For detailed instructions on how to do this activity, see the Teacher/Co-Teacher Training Video. Note: For this activity, pour water into the container with the regular sand. Stir it up to create mud. Show the mud to the children. Then pour water into the other container with the Magic Sand® . Stir it up and show the children how the sand and water do not mix. During the activity in the middle of service, say the following: 1. It’s almost time to go to our Scientific Groups but before we do, let’s take a look at today’s Science Experiment. 2. Let’s pour some water into the container with the regular sand. I’m going to stir it up. Wow, it’s turning into mud. 3. Now that we know what regular sand does, let’s see what happens to the waterproof sand. I’m going to stir it up. Wow, it’s staying dry. 4. Let’s pour some of the regular sand out of the container. 5. Let’s pour some of the waterproof sand out of the container. 6. When you pour out the waterproof sand, your hand gets wet, but the sand is dry! That is so cool. 7. I’m going to let you feel the waterproof sand and see how it is still dry on your way out to your Scientific Groups. After the activity, say the following: Now it is time for our Scientific Groups. Have fun! 1 © 2015 Elevate LESSON 8: EVERYBODY IS IMPORTANT! Lead the children through the Opening Activity “Atom Stacker,” or another Large Group Activity to engage the children’s attention as they enter the room. For a detailed example, watch the “Adventures In Science L8 Teacher/CoTeacher Training Video.” Begin Large Group Time with the “Countdown Video.” [1] TEACHER Pop a lots a pop a flopsa! (waits for the children to respond) You’re supposed to say “Pop a lots a pop a flopsa to you too!” #1 TEACHER Thanks! (looks at class) My, my, another great looking class we have here today! I’m (Teacher’s name). This is AIS laboratories. A place of research and development where we look at the miracles and mysteries of the Bible. TEACHER It’s also where we do research alongside the illustrious Dr. Oppenheimerstein and his robot, Flask. Dr. Opp is a brilliant scientist trying to win the famous Plutonium Award! Which, if he doesn’t win this week, he never will because I think this is the last week they are awarding it! Anyway, before we get to that, take a look around. As you can see we have lots of things that we need to be very careful around. Because of that, we have some very important rules that all of us need to follow. [2] The first is that everyone must stay in their seat at all times, unless we tell you that you can get up! TEACHER [3] The second is that there should be no talking while I am up here on the AIS stage. TEACHER [4] The third is to be sure to keep your hands to yourselves. 1 #2 #3 #4 © 2015 Elevate TEACHER [5] And the fourth is to participate and have fun! TEACHER And in order to begin having that, everybody stand up and help me kick off our time in the AIS lab with a song! #5 Teacher leads the children in singing “Shout Out Loud.” [6] TEACHER Thanks for singing so loud! That is such a great song. Okay, today I would like to spend some time talking about the importance of all the body parts. Because, let’s face it, every part of our body is important. Even the pinkie toe! And to prove it, we are going to play a round of Simon Says. [8] Simon says, “Everybody stand up.” And now Simon says, “Hop on one foot.” #6 #8 TEACHER Simon says, “Hop on your other foot.” TEACHER Simon says, “Run in place.” TEACHER Simon says, “Stomp your feet!” TEACHER Simons says, “Stop.” Now imagine you had stubbed your pinky toe! It would be hard to play that game. If something goes wrong with your pinky toe it affects other things that you try to do. Every part of the body is important. It takes all of our body parts working together to accomplish the things we want. If something is wrong with even one small body part, it can make doing simple things much harder. TEACHER And you know what? It’s the same for us here at church. The Bible refers to the church as the body of Christ. That means that we are all part of Christ’s body. And, just like every part of the human body is important, every part of the body of Christ is important too. Which leads me nicely into our Main Point for today. [9] Everybody Is Important! The Teacher leads the children to make up cheerleader-type hand motions that go along with the Main Point. Once everyone has gone over the Main Point, have the children repeat it with the motions two or three times. #9 TEACHER So, everybody is part of the body of Christ and everybody is important! Which our Bible Verse talks about...check it out. [10] “Just as our bodies have many parts and each part has a special function, so it is with Christ’s body. We are many parts of one body, and we all belong to each other.” Romans 12:4-5 (NLT) 2 #10 © 2015 Elevate TEACHER Now, after seeing this verse, we can see that all of us are important parts of the body of Christ. Seems like a simple concept... but, not for everybody. I think Dr. Oppenheimerstein is a little confused about this today. Let’s find out what he and Flask are up to. Teacher exits. Play “Bible Lesson and Skit Video.” [11] #11 Teacher re-enters. TEACHER (excited) He did it! He did it! He finally won the Plutonium award! I wasn’t sure he had it in him, but he did! And to think it was for an invention he had in his lab the whole time. TEACHER Crazy, just crazy! And you know what else is crazy... that we are able to call ourselves the body of Christ AND as parts of His body we are all important! Say, since we are all parts of the body of Christ, I think it would be great if we all got together and worshipped Him by singing our AIS worship song! Teacher leads the children in singing “Limitless.” [12] TEACHER It’s now time to break up into our scientific groups, but before we do that would you like to see the experiment I have been working on? Let’s check it out! [13] SCIENCE EXPERIMENT - “Waterproof Sand” TEACHER Pretty cool huh? Now it is time for our Scientific Groups. Have fun and I’ll see you when you get back. #12 #13 SCIENTIFIC GROUPS (SMALL GROUPS) [14] Take Offering while in Scientific Groups. TEACHER I’m glad everyone made it back from Scientific Groups, because now it’s time for a Mouse Maze! [15] WEEKLY RACE ACTIVITY - “Mouse Maze” TEACHER We need your help! Dr. Oppenheimerstein is experimenting again! It’s time for “Experiments With Dr. Oppenheimerstein”! [16] WEEKLY REVIEW ACTIVITY - “Experiments With Dr. Oppenheimerstein” TEACHER Thanks for helping the Doctor. That experiment never would have worked without you.
