Things to Know for this Assignment

The Photo Editing PDF includes a lot of screenshots to show you the process of editing the two
photos given. The requirements for the final assignment are at the very end of the document. The
requirements are:

The shark’s eye is not red
The shark’s teeth are white
The ocean background has been removed from the Shark and Sea Lion picture.
The Shark and Sea Lion appear in the fountain.
The Shark and Sea Lion appear to be scaled to twice the original size.
The water color on the Shark matches the color in the fountain.
Your name appears in the upper left corner of the image.

Once you paste the shark into the fountain you should
have two separate layers. Once you have two layers
you might not be able to edit certain areas of the
picture. Layers separate different parts of a picture. If
you have the background layer clicked, you will not be
able to edit any of the shark, and vice versa.

If you don’t want these elements separated and you
just want one picture that you can fully edit, right click
on the layer and click on flatten image.

If you have a shark in one layer, and your background
in another, but you don’t see the shark, it might be
because the shark layer is behind the background layer. Click and drag Layer 1 to the top of the layers.
If a layer is above another layer in the window, then that means that it is also above that layer in the
picture.

If Layer 1 is above the background but you still don’t see the shark, it may not have been copied
correctly. Make sure that once you are done with the Intelligent Scissors or lasso tool that there is a
moving outline around the shark. Once you see that you can copy and paste it into the other picture.

You can also make certain layers disappear temporarily by clicking
on the eye icon to the left. When you uncheck this box that layer will
be hidden, check it again to make it appear.

Number 18 on the Gimp instructions has you using the Intelligent
Scissors to outline the shark. This way requires you to click around
the part of the image you want (the shark) until you get to the first
dot that you made. You need to click on the first dot you made to
complete the selection.

If this way isn’t working for you, try the technique that the Photoshop
instructions suggests, which is the Lasso tool. The regular Lasso
Tool will let you click and drag around to select an area, and may
take more time and patience to do. The Polygonal Lasso Tool is similar to the Intelligent Scissors, and
the Magnetic Lasso tool will try to outline the selection you want automatically by sticking to the edge
of the shark.
