Letter from the Board Chair
A Year of Promise
It has been an exciting year for the Smoky Hills Charitable Foundation
(SHCF) and foundations all across the country as they celebrated 100 years
of service to communities. SHCF is only 14 years in the making but the
impact through grants of over $265,000 is helping to build a brighter place
in Ellsworth County.
This year, the Foundation held a match day, Match Madness, to help
existing funds at SHCF raise dollars to support their endowments. The
funds were then eligible for a matching cash grant from an $8000 match
pool provided by the Foundation. The response was overwhelming and
Match Madness raised a total of $51,653 for seven participating funds.
These funds will support communities in Ellsworth County in various ways
now and into the future.
If you would like to make your community of Ellsworth, Holyrood,
Kanopolis, Lorraine and Wilson shine brighter, think about supporting
your community by starting a fund. Or support the community grant fund
which gives grants once a year to applicants from around the county.
Imagine the possibilities if everyone designated just 5% of their estates for
the needs of their community. This is a great way to leave a legacy and all
gifts are tax-deductible.
Smoky Hills Charitable Foundation is building a bright future as the funds
grow and grants continue to support Ellsworth County.
“Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress;
working together is success.” -Henry Ford
Thank you for supporting the Smoky Hills Charitable Foundation.

Donors
The most important element in the Foundation is our donors because
without them we would not exist. They are what keeps the Foundation
strong and successful. Some gifts are small and some large, but when
combined, they all work towards one common goal—building a brighter
Ellsworth County.

Funds & Grants
Part of our mission in making the Smoky Hills area a brighter place to live
is to meet charitable community needs through grants. Since inception,
SHCF has awarded over $265,000 in grants that support a broad range of
charitable causes—some donor directed and some determined by our
board of directors. It is the opportunity to make an impact that makes us
feel blessed to be part of this organization.
Smoky Hills Community Fund
The Smoky Hills Community Fund is an unrestricted grant fund that
provides the board of directors the flexibility to respond to the changing
needs of the community. Grants from this fund are awarded through a
competitive application process and support a wide variety of charitable
causes and nonprofit organizations. Donations of any size to this fund will
continue to make our area a brighter place to live.
Funding for this grant program comes from donations, memorials, and
other gifts to the Smoky Hills Charitable Foundation. Gifts of any size
are welcome additions to this important community grant fund and will
help earn a 50% match from the Kansas Health Foundation’s GROW II
matching grant program.

Funds for the Future
Funds for the future enable donors to make a brighter future at the end
of their lifetimes. Donors create a fund agreement during their lifetime to

A Bright and Healthy Future
Helping Kansas communities build permanent resources to improve the
health of local residents is one of the main goals of the Kansas Health
Foundation’s GROW II goal, and it shows! Since participating in GROW
II, the Foundation has earned more than $90,000 in matching grant
dollars to specifically support the public health of Ellsworth County.
From our public health funds, we have granted $5,537 to 5 different
projects and programs and these figures will only continue to grow. In
addition to supporting public health, GROW II has also helped leverage
over $475,000 in new endowed gifts to other funds at the Foundation,
keeping Ellsworth County a bright and vibrant place to live.

Funds & Grants
Donor Advised Funds
Donor advised gives donors the opportunity to make the future brighter
by actively engaging them in the grantmaking process. It is similar to
a private foundation but with less hassle and better tax advantages.
Donors can choose what charities to support through their fund while the
Foundation handles the investment, administration and correspondence.

Supporting your favorite charity is easy to do with a designated fund.
Donors can designate one or more charities within one fund and the

A Big Year for Community
Foundations Everywhere
One hundred years ago, in 1914, the first community foundation was
established in the Midwest, giving rise to a new philanthropy, a new
way of participating in community, and a new vision for the future.
Today, Smoky Hills Charitable Foundation is one of more than 700
community foundations in the United States, collectively managing
more than $66 billion in assets and making grants of approximately
$4.9 billion a year to improve life in their communities. There are
more than 1,700 community foundations worldwide.
Since we were established in 2001, Smoky Hills Charitable Foundation
has made grants of more than $265,000 to address pressing needs
and important local causes, through the generous gifts of our donors.
In the past year alone, we’ve:
• Established two new funds to improve life in Ellsworth County
• Granted over $30,000 to causes or organizations, e.g., establish
a leadership program in Ellsworth County, a literacy program,
and more
• Partnered with the Kansas Health Foundation to leverage over
$46,000 in matching dollars to support the public health of
Ellsworth County and the Foundation’s operations
We’re proud to be part of this vibrant field of community
philanthropy—100 years and growing!

Bike for Health Raises Over $12,000
Frank Toman Bike for Health that invited riders to pay a small admission
fee and ride a 30 mile circuit between Ellsworth and Holyrood. Each rider
received a t-shirt for their participation.
Toman got sponsors and supporters for the ride while he also pledged
a $1 to $1 match for the first $2000 raised. Through a matching grant from
the Kansas Health Foundation (KHF), all money raised was also matched.
The ride was a success. The race raised
over $12,000 from donors, sponsors,
riders, Toman’s match and the KHF
match. All donated funds and the KHF
match were given to the Smoky Hills
Healthy Living Fund at the Smoky Hills
Charitable Foundation.
Your hometown.
Their future.
You’ve enjoyed a good life in a great
community. What would you do to
ensure future generations of Kansans
can say the same?
The Keep 5 in Kansas initiative asks us to
designate just 5% of our estates to our hometown
needs. With a little planning, and help from our
community foundations, we can create permanent
funding for our schools, hospitals, churches, parks,
nonprofits, libraries, and so much more!
