AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination. In

AVID is a new elective class for students who need some extra support getting ready to
be successful in high school and who have the goal of attending college.
Students are selected as a good candidate’s for AVID based on their current grades,
attendance, behavior, and their interest in attending college. Students in AVID must be
willing and committed to working hard toward academic success, so part of the selection
criteria is that they have excellent attendance and school behavior. A typical AVID
participant is a student who earns a GPA of 2.0—3.0 and is often a “first in family” college
attender.
Being a part of AVID involves an application & interview process. Students & parents will
begin learning more about AVID in February & March.
AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination.
In simple terms, this means YOU are the one that can make your
dreams happen. This class gives you the support so you can be in
charge of your school success. Your future is up to you!
 AVID is an elective class taught by Mrs. Grant.
If you know about the Intro to HS class, it will be very much like that
elective…but better! Students will learn & practice strong high
school/college habits. AVID is a full-year elective.
 AVID is also offered at Glencoe High School. Students can
begin their AVID skillbuilding at Evergreen and continue their
work at Glencoe.
 AVID is not for everyone. All chosen participants must want to
be in AVID themselves. If a student’s parent wants it more than the
student, then AVID is not a good fit for that student. AVID will only
accept students who are eager to get support and are willing to work
hard to achieve academic success.

ORGANIZATION: In AVID, students will learn & practice organizing
their supplies, assignments, information. Students who are organized are
able to learn better because they know where everything is.
FOCUSING ON THE FUTURE: A lot of AVID is thinking & learning
about high school & college. Students will be learning about what it
takes to be successful in both places, and practice those habits along the
way.
READING & WRITING: Many AVID activities involve practice in reading
& writing. Having strong reading & writing skills will be extremely
important if a student wants to be successful in high school and college.
In AVID, students will get a lot of extra practice each week.
TUTORIALS: Tutorials are a time where students get to work in
college-type study groups. All students will be required to bring in
questions from their classes (something they are “stuck” or confused about and
having difficulty understanding). With the help of their tutorial group,
students will work as a team to get “unstuck” and hopefully move
forward with their learning. A high school, college, or adult tutor will
assist & guide each group. Tutoring sessions are twice a week, so AVID
students get lots of practice working in groups, asking good questions,
helping others with their learning, and reflecting on the learning process.
They take some practice, but tutorial sessions can one of the best parts
about AVID.
FUN STUFF!: Students will be doing a lot of fun things in AVID. There
will be field trips, guest speakers, games & parties. AVID is like a family,
so students feel they have a community of support as they work on
preparing for their future!
