The first empires of Mesopotamia (2334—1595 BC)
From the 2300’s BC the rule of city state in Mesopotamia was replaced by the rule of empires. Those
early empires were generally unstable and short lived, their success depending on the strength of
their rulers. Conquered stated were forced to pay tribute, but were not occupied, so in times of weak
rule they could assert their independence by stopping payments. Mesopotamian empires also faced
threats from beyond their boarders. People such as the Kassites and Amorites from neighbouring regions were attracted by the wealth of Mesopotamia and the land with its un-defendable frontiers
was frequently attacked.
