REPORT OF THE SESSION
BATUMI (Georgia)
July 24th to 30th, 2016
-1-
For the second edition of the summer university programme in Georgia, the « Centre
international de formation européenne » has choosen the very attractive place of Batumi from July 24th to
30th. The one week summer school was organised in collaboration with several partners, all very involved
in the organisation of the programme.
A small, family hotel had been chosen to accommodate all the students together and some
of the teachers. The entire hotel was booked for our group, which has a very familiar atmosphere, mostly
thanks to the warm welcome from the hotel owner's family
This place was very well
located very close to the university and the
old town, and just 15 minutes walking to the
location of the academic program. During
the long evenings, together with a few
Georgian new friends, everybody had good
opportunities to visit Batumi, the beach, and
test the specific gastronomy.
The academic program was structured around the specific issues of NATO specially in the Black sea
area. A lot of topics were developed, security policy, NATO relations with Turkey, Russia, South
Caucasus, frozen conflicts, geopolitics in the wider Black sea region, etc…
The programme contained approximately 30 hours of lectures and discussions. They were conducted in
English by international experts from European Union and from Georgia.
The participants represented 8 different nationalities half from Georgia and half from
other European countries. Probably because of this very friendly accommodation and of the involvement
of the local candidates, the group immediately formed a little family, taking benefit of every free time
proposed.
In addition, the participants enjoyed a rich extra programme which helped them to savour
the culture and the gastronomy of this special country. A full day was organised around Batimi and in
the mountain part of Adjara,
All the candidates completed the program successfully and received a certificate of
participation. Additionally, those students who presented some supplementary work after the session
acquired ECTS Credits.
We also asked our students at the end of the session to fill out the evaluation questionnaire
and comment upon our programme. Their observations, which can be found further on in this report have
been of immense value for us, organisers.
This programme was considered as a great success and Cife thanks the partners to have
accepted this collaboration, and specially the Embassy of Romania, NATO contact Point Embassy in
Georgia for the financial support. A new session in Batumi probably will be organised in 2017.

EVALUATION
The evaluation session organised at the end of the session and the examination of the forms proved
an exceptional satisfaction of the students regarding the programme as well as the organisation and the
logistic. We can consider that the program has been widely praised with a level of satisfaction of 95%.
Studying conditions were very high in the building of Batumi Shota Rustaveli State University,
very close to the park, the old city and ….. the beach ! This location was also very easy to join from the
hotel and the restaurant.
The choice of topics was appreciated and judged interesting and useful. The panel of the
lecturers, from Georgia and from abroad, was a very high level. All the students were very satisfied with
the proposed activities, an open discussion with all the teachers. Even if one of the Turkish teacher was
not in position to join the programme because of the politic situation in Turkey, the presentation on line
by Skype was organised with success.
Regarding the lectures and the speakers, the students made many positive comments on our team
of lecturers which additionally gave them insight into different subjects. In addition, the candidates have
all noticed a very large satisfaction about
- relations with the staff,
- administrative assistance offered before and during the program
- cultural and tourist activities offered outside the program
- and a very, very friendly atmosphere.
All the candidates, even from Georgia, have largely taken advantage of their free time after the
courses and were able to visit, thanks to their Georgian friends, all the interesting places of Batumi. The
general opinion was that this program is a perfect mixture of leisure activities and lectures.
A day-trip organised the last day, in the mountain part of Adjara region, was an opportunity to
have a large vision of other places of Georgia.
In conclusion, all candidates have been very satisfied with the program and expressed the wish to follow
another summer session of CIFE in the future.
CIFE warmly thanks all the partners that have accepted to collaborate for this programme and
specially the collaborators of Batumi Shota Rustaveli State University, Georgian Institute of Politics, the
Romanian Embassy and the Information Center on NATO and EU in Georgia. This program could not
have been such a success without the involvement of all the partners, motivated, interested and very
professionals.
