School Night in South Korea
Every night at 10 o’clock, inspectors in Seoul, South Korea, drive through the streets looking for
open “hagwon” – special private schools. They don’t often see students in the streets, but
sometimes there is a light in a hagwon window. When they see this the inspectors enter the school.
Why do they do that? Because studying at a hagwon isn’t legal after 10.00 at night.
In South Korea, education is very important. At school, students study maths, science, history,
English and many other subjects. They work hard for years because they want to go to a good
university. Many Year 9 students begin their school day at 8.00 am. They study until 4.00 pm, go
home for dinner and go to a hagwon at 6.00 in the evening. They then often study until 10.00 pm.
Many students want to study until 12.00 am or 1.00 am. They know education is important for their
future. But schools in Seoul must close by 10.00 pm. So the students hide from the inspectors and
study, study, study… .
1. What do inspectors in Seoul look for every night?
2. Why is “hagwon” illegal?
3. Why do students study so much in South Korea?
The Whiteboard Artist
Every day during the lunch break, students leave their classrooms to eat, meet friends and play
games on their laptops or tablets. Everyone wants to relax between lessons – including teachers. But
what do teachers do during the break? Most of them have lunch too, but Gregory Euclide from
Minnesota, USA, uses his 25-minute break to draw pictures.
Euclide is an art teacher. He teaches classes of about 40 students for five hours a day, eight months
a year. Between lessons, he draws amazing pictures on the whiteboard in his classroom. He uses
special pens and paintbrushes. Then, at the end of the day, he cleans the whiteboard. How do his
students feel about this? They love Euclide’s pictures, so they don’t want the pictures to disappear.
Now copies of Euclide’s whiteboard art are in books and art galleries. There are even Internet sites
with information about him. Not bad for a lunch break artist!
1. What does Gregory Euclide do during the lunch break?
2. Do students like his pictures?
3. Is Euclide a famous artist?
The Real Stars
Doing sport isn’t just about winning. Sometimes it’s about helping others.
1 It’s 2006. The Greece Athena High School basketball team from Rochester, New York is
playing its last home game of the season. The team helper, an autistic student called Jason
McElwain, loves basketball. So coach Jim Johnson decides to make Jason happy and to let him
play for the first time. Jason amazes everyone and scores 20 points in four minutes. People are
smiling and shouting Jason’s name. It’s a magical moment.
2
It’s October 2011. Students James Konopka and Nick Mead from Philadelphia are in a boat
race. When two people in another boat fall in the 7ºC water, James and Nick decide to help
them. Then they continue the race. They finish last, but they are the real stars.
3
It’s 2012. Iván Fernández Anaya from Vitoria is running in a race in Burlanda. He’s behind the
Kenyan runner Abel Mutai. Abel makes a mistake and stops before the finish line. It’s a chance
for Iván to win. But he shows Abel his mistake and lets him finish first. According to Iván, Abel
is the “rightful winner”.
1. Why does Jason amaze everybody?
2. Why are James and Nick the real winners of the race?
3. What mistake does Abel make?
4. How does Iván Fernández help Abel?

Q&A.world
Question:
There’s a werewolf in Twilight and in the Harry Potter books and films. Did modern writers invent
this part human, part wolf creature?
Best answer:
No, they didn’t. The Roman writer Ovid wrote about werewolves in 1 AD. According to Ovid, King
Lycaon gave Jupiter meat for dinner – human meat. Jupiter was very angry about this, and he
transformed Lycaon into a werewolf – a creature with fur, paws and claws. In modern films and
books, people become werewolves at night. But Ovid’s werewolf didn’t wait for dark. He changed
at any time of day.
Question:
Where do zombies come from?
Best answer:
Zombies are creatures with human bodies and faces but they can’t speak or think. Stories about
zombies originated in Africa hundreds of years ago. Later, in the 17th and 18th centuries, people
from Africa were slaves on French plantations in Haiti. The African slaves had very difficult lives.
They didn’t have much food and they lived in terrible conditions. Many slaves decided to kill
themselves. The French didn’t want the slaves to die. They knew about the African fear of zombies,
so they invented new stories about the creatures. According to these stories, people became zombies
when they killed themselves.
1. According to Ovid, who was the first werewolf and why?
2. Where did the first zombies appear?
3. Why did the French make up stories about zombies?
Is That Film Healthy?
Before you choose the film channel on your TV or buy some cinema tickets, think about this:
The types of films you watch can affect your health!
Comedies
Have you got a headache? Is there stress in your life? Then you should watch a comedy. Comedies
aren’t just fun. Laughing for 15 minutes during a comedy affects your body like 15 minutes of
aerobic exercise. Your heart sends more blood through your body, your blood pressure goes down,
your headache disappears and you forget about your problems.
Horror Films
What have extreme sports and watching horror films got in common? Your body produces the
hormone adrenalin during these activities. Adrenalin helps you react to dangerous situations. It
makes you feel alert and ready to do anything. Some people love this feeling, and they must have
more and more excitement in their lives. But people with high blood pressure or heart problems
must be careful about watching horror films or doing extreme sports, because the adrenalin can be
dangerous for them.
3D Films
Some people love 3D films, but some people walk out of them saying, “I couldn’t see anything”.
This is because people with eye problems often can’t see the 3D effects. 3D films can be fun, but
they can also cause stomach aches or headaches.
1. How does laughing for 15 minutes affect your body?
2. How does adrenalin affect your body?
3. Can adrenalin be dangerous?
4. What are the negative effects of 3D films?
Orangutan Bad Habits
The Facts:
Orangutans are endangered animals from Indonesia. They are very intelligent animals and
they can think and solve problems. According to scientists, orangutans and humans share
97% of their genes.
An Interesting Story:
Orangutans have got some other similarities to humans. Sometimes, they share our bad habits.
Tori, an orangutan, and her partner Didik lived in a cage at a zoo in Solo, Central Java, Indonesia.
Many Indonesians smoke cigarettes, and visitors to the zoo often threw cigarettes into the
orangutans’ cage. Didik was cleverer than Tori, and he stepped on the cigarettes. But Tori started
smoking them. She became addicted, and she wanted cigarettes every day. She even learned to put
her fingers on her mouth to show people she wanted to smoke. When they didn’t give her cigarettes,
she became angry and threw things. This dangerous situation continued for ten years, and then the
zoo decided to move Didik and Tori. They put the orangutans on an island in the zoo. The island
was more exciting than the cage, and it had places to climb and play. People could see the
orangutans there, but they couldn’t give them anything. Soon, Tori forgot about the cigarettes. She
was healthier than before and she and Didik even had a baby. Tori, Didik and their baby still live
happily in their smoke-free home today.

Help Me, Computer!
The maths exercises are really hard. You don’t know how you’re going to do them and no one
can help you. You’re angry and you want to hit your computer keyboard. Suddenly, an avatar
appears on the screen.
I can see you’re very angry, but don’t worry. I’m going to help you. Let’s try again.
Does this sound like a scene from a science-fiction film? That’s because until recently, only
computers in films could understand people’s feelings. But Professor Beverly Woolf at the
University of Massachusetts in the USA recently developed a special computer program to detect
and respond to people’s emotions. Professor Woolf uses the program to help maths students.
Students solve maths problems online and a webcam takes pictures of their expressions and
movements. Sensors on a mouse give the computer more information: Is the student bored or
interested? Is he or she going to complete the task successfully? The computer knows the answer.
It tries different methods to help the student, such as reading out the question and using computer
animations to explain the solution. It also says things to make the student feel good. According to
Professor Woolf, students’ marks in maths improved by 20% after using her program. Their
feelings about maths also improved. Not bad!
1. What did Professor Woolf develop at the University of Massachusetts?
2. Who benefits from this program?
3. How does the computer detect the students´emotions?
