Bonjour! My name is Emily Lamothe and I am a Grade 12 French Immersion student here at St. Joseph-Scollard Hall (SJSH). I have been in the French Immersion system since JK and honestly, I think it was one of the best decisions my parents have ever made with my future in mind. While all four kids in my family were put into the immersion system, I am the only one who has been lucky enough to be a part of this amazing program for my final year. My French teachers here at Scollard are some of the nicest, most caring people I’ve ever met. They always work so hard to help me to reach my full potential. Whether it is their enthusiasm for the language or the fact that they are just plain awesome, they are people I don’t think I’ll soon forget. Continuing my French Immersion education has really helped me out. Coming into school on the first day of Grade 9, I almost always had a course with a familiar face from my Grade 8 class. I’ve been able to share French with my mom, who also grew up with it. It’s become our top secret language in a house of Anglophones! I’ve been able to help people in my community and communicate with them effectively. French has even been a common link in many of my present day relationships. Some things I have learned during my time in the French Immersion system are: 1. There are a lot more verb tenses than présent and passé composé. 2. Speaking in French is a requirement in class, always. 3. There is more than one dialect of French. 4. That I actually enjoy reading in French. 5. That I’m never judged for speaking in French, but rather praised for my initiative and for trying my best. 6. When the teachers say they are there for you, they really are. My experience in the French Immersion system has been life altering. Not only have I been given the tools I need to successfully communicate in French now and in the future, but I’ve also been able to be a part of an awesome family. Continuing French at SJSH is an amazing opportunity! Don’t let it pass you by. I look forward not only to graduating with my immersion certificate, but also to the opportunity of taking the Diplôme d'études en langue française (DELF) test at the end of this year, which will help me with my future studies and career. In conclusion, I cannot express my gratitude and enthusiasm for this program. Know that sending your child to St. Joseph-Scollard Hall is a choice you can be sure of and proud to make!
