Model 5500-series Clark Technology
Membrane Dissolved Oxygen Sensor
„ Replaceable Membrane
Cartridge.
Model 5500-series dissolved
oxygen sensors feature a
replaceable cartridge, simplifying
the delicate and time-consuming
task of installing a new
membrane. Each cartridge
assembly includes a pre-installed,
semi-permeable membrane,
electrolyte, and electrodes.
„ Rugged, Foul-resistant
Membrane.
An extremely durable 50 micron
thick hydrophobic membrane
ensures that the D.O. sensor
resists fouling and withstands the
harsh environments found in
wastewater treatment plants.
„ Automatic Self-cleaning
Accessories.
Self-contained air blast cleaning
systems, complete with air
compressor, are offered for use
with GLI analyzers to
automatically clean the sensor
membrane. A separate washer
head air blast assembly is also
available. It requires an external
source to provide pressurized air.
„ Clark Cell Technology.
GLI Model 5500-series dissolved
oxygen sensors use polarographic
Clark Cell technology that
includes a three-electrode system:
gold cathode, silver anode, and
silver reference electrodes. The
potentiostatic design operates by
polarizing the silver reference
electrode with a constant voltage
potential. This third electrode
provides a more constant potential
than the silver anode (used as
reference in conventional twoelectrode systems) because it
does not conduct current flow
necessary to measure the
dissolved oxygen. The reference
electrode gives the GLI sensor
greater accuracy and stability due
to better long-term polarization
stability as the silver anode and
electrolyte age.
„ Versatile Mounting Hardware.
The handrail and flotation
hardware assemblies feature a
unique stainless steel swivel/
pivot/pipe clamp assembly,
enabling easy sensor positioning
and removal from the process.
The flotation hardware has a ball
float assembly that continually
bobs up and down to gently scrub
the sensor membrane. The
submersion hardware enables
submerging the sensor to a
desired depth in the basin. All
hardware includes a NEMA 4X
junction box with quick-disconnect
receptacle for the metal plug on
the sensor cable (termination
option “A”). Flow-through union
hardware is also offered to quickly
and easily remove and replace a
union-mount style sensor into a
process pipe.
„ Complete Encapsulation.
Fully-encapsulated
construction protects the
sensor’s built-in electronics
from moisture and humidity
problems, extending the
working life of the sensor.
„ Advanced Diagnostics.
When used with GLI analyzers,
the sensor will provide an alarm
signal for a punctured membrane,
or depleted or contaminated
electrolyte.
