Bicycles, Scooters and Skateboards The use of bicycles, scooters and skateboards on school property is not allowed for safety reasons. If students use any of these items to get to school, they should walk or carry them onto school property. Bikes are to be left at the bike racks and scooters or skateboards are to be stored in the student’s locker. We cannot be responsible for the security of these items. If you have a concern, please discourage your child from taking his/her bike to school. Thank you for your co-operation in this matter. Also, it is the law in Ontario for all children aged 18 and under to wear a helmet when travelling on any public road. Please discuss with your child the importance of wearing a helmet to prevent head injuries and obey the law. EQAO Testing Every year students in Grades 3 and 6 across the province participate in assessments that are developed by the Education Quality and Accountability Office. Students complete a set of test booklets that allow them to show what they have learned in reading, writing and math. The testing will take place between May 30th and June 3rd and should take approximately 6 hours spread out over those days. Parents of students in Grades 3 and 6 will receive more specific information in the near future from their child’s teacher. What to wear? The hot weather will hopefully be here soon, so it is time to review what is appropriate dress for school. Shorts of an acceptable length are fine. A good way to determine the appropriate length is to have your child stand with their arms at their sides. The shorts should meet or exceed the finger-tip. Shirts must cover the midriff – no exposed skin between the shirt and the shorts. A good test for this is to have your child reach towards the sky. A t-shirt that is long enough will not expose the midriff. Sleeveless shirts or tank tops are allowed. No tops with “spaghetti straps”. Sunscreen is essential. Now that we know the skin damage that sun can cause, we encourage students to cover up, wear a wide-brimmed hat, and apply liberal amounts of sunscreen. Being Sun Safe is key to having a great summer! Swim to Survive The grade 4 classes are enjoying being a part of the Swim to Survive program. The program consists of in-class lessons on water safety (ice safety, boating safety and using a lifejacket) and swimming lessons in the pool. The students are trying to achieve the Swim to Survive standard of being able to roll into the water, tread water for one minute and then swim fifty metres. Mme Deschenes and Mme Mitchell’s grade 4’s are having fun with their classmates while participating in this program which will end on June 15th. Don’t forget your swim gear every Wednesday (Mme Mitchell) and Thursday (Mme Deschenes). Carl A.
