Overview
Materials
After discussing the Equator, Prime Meridian, and latitude and
longitude on a map, then the students will see that the equator
passes through the country of Uganda on a map, and can find
the latitude and longitude of Kampala, Uganda. The students
will then design and create Christmas cards to send to orphans
at a school in Uganda.
Green, red, or white construction
paper (half sheet per child)
Objectives
Materials for decorating cards –
markers, colored pencils, paint,
stickers, etc.
Picture of the student/class to
attach to card (optional)
SS3G1 The student will locate major topographical features.
a. Locate the Equator, Prime Meridian, and lines of latitude
and longitude on a globe.
Activities
1. Representative from Simone’s Kids will read Beatrice’s Goat.
OR
Teacher will read African folktale such as Why Mosquitos Buzz
In People’s Ears, or an Anansi the Spider book to introduce
African culture.
2. Show students United States on map or globe, and then locate
Africa.
3. Students will make Christmas cards. Students will design
their own card and write a message to the students in Uganda.
