Dear Nursery Road Family,
Calling all Champions to “feel the rhythm and share the love” for a good cause!
I’m so excited to invite our students, teachers, and staff to be a part of our District
Five Dance Marathon on Saturday, February 18th at 7 Oaks Park from 10:30 am12:30pm. Not only will you have fun and burn calories, but you will also raise
money for the Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital, which has helped many of
our Champions and their families.
Wondering what to do next? Sign up with your homeroom teacher by Friday,
January 27th. Please fill out the other side of this form and turn in either $5 to just
participate, or $10 to participate with a tee-shirt. All checks should be written
to “Lexington Richland School District 5.”
After registering, you may start asking everyone you know for a “dollar for the
dance!” All participants have a fundraising goal of $100.00 and our school-wide
“Team Champion” goal is to raise a total of $1,000.00. All fundraising money
should be turned in by Friday, February 10th to be counted for incentive
prizes. All money raised after that should be brought directly to the marathon.
I know if we all can do a little, we can make a BIG difference! Please let me know
if you have any questions!
Sincerely,
Vanessa Torres

January Literacy Spotlight
Prompts Beyond “Sounding it Out”
The heart of reading is making meaning, gaining new information from text. We read to learn new information, answer questions, expand our knowledge of the world, and simply to enjoy stories. If students are
unable to comprehend stories they read, they are word calling. Word calling will not increase students
knowledge base or deepen their understanding of topics. Simply put, children learn to read by reading. If
children can’t yet read well enough to learn to read, they need someone to read for them.
Often as proficient readers, we are unsure of what to do to help our young children learning to read.
We revert to what we learned in school and tell them to “sound it out.” However, the alphabet can often
be a handicap for those learning to read. Frank Smith in Reading Without Nonsense (2006) states,
“Individual letters, with rare and obvious exceptions, do not have any meaning until they become parts of
words, so trying to teach children to read by teaching them the sounds of letters is literally a meaningless
activity.”
So, what can you say to help you child figure out unknown words? Try one of these prompts next time
your child gets stuck:

Did that make sense?

Think about what would make sense with the picture/story.

What could that word be, based on what’s in the picture (or happening

in the story)?

What can you try? What else can you try?

Is there a part of that word that you’ve seen in other words?

Did that sound right?

Why did you stop? What did you notice? What would make sense?

What could that word be?

What else would make sense here?

Does that look right?
 Skip it and come back….. Ok, you skipped it, now let’s come back and try to figure out what that word
could be.
