3.6 SOLVING DECIMAL EQUATIONS
Most of the equations you have solved in this chapter have involved integers and equations with exact solutions. In
this section we will solve problems that require us to round off answers as well as equations where all the
coefficients and constants are decimals.
Example: Solve and Round your answer to the nearest hundredth. 2 ( −5a + 7 ) = − a
Example: Solve and Round your answer to the nearest tenth. 9.45 − 5.2 x = −8.5 x + 15.78
Example: You have gone shopping for graph paper (since you MUST have some for Chapter 4!!!!). The sales tax
in Orange County is 7.75%. If you have exactly $10.00, how much can you actually spend on graph paper without
going over $10.00? If each packet of graph paper cost $1.09, how many can you buy?

Example: You have exactly $6 and are in the drive thru at Carl’s Jr. You are really hungry, but
don’t want to be embarrassed by ordering more than $6 worth of food. What is your price limit if
the sales tax is 8.25%?
