Elizabeth Martin-Drew takes part in
BGT!
In February, Elizabeth
who is a member of
The International Harp
Ensemble took part in
Britain’s Got Talent.
Out of 70,000 acts the
Ensemble were shortlisted to the final 100 having achieved
a resounding four ‘yeses’ and rarely given compliments
from Simon Cowell who is renowned for not appreciating
the harp!
The Ensemble narrowly missed being one of the forty
semi-finalists to go through to the next stage but to have
been selected from such a large number of acts was a great
achievement and something they are proud of.
The Ensemble will shortly be performing joint concerts with
the international singing star mezzo-soprano Faryl Smith.
Elizabeth is thrilled! We’ll be advertising future Ensemble
concerts dates shortly.
Visit www.internationalharpensemble.co.uk you can even

NURSERY & PRE-PREP NEWS
Dressing Up Day – Congratulations to the winners for imaginative costumes:
Ben Bigwood as Mr Saucepan Man from the Faraway Tree, and his brother Matthew as
Mr Whatsisname; Charlie as The Stick Man; Macie as Handa from Handa’s Surprise;
Henri as Harry Potter (for good broomstick manufacture!); Marco with an excellent
Pinocchio nose and Emily W as Angelina Ballerina.
In the Nursery, prizes were awarded to a green Mrs Powley (Princess Fiona from
Shrek) and Mrs Jubb (Wanda from Where’s Wally), Layla – another lovely Angelina
Ballerina and Arun as The Gingerbread Man.
Thank you to all those mums and dads who had gone to such trouble to help their children – it was a fun
and very colourful day!
Nursery - The Toddle Waddle was a huge success. The children had fun in the woods hunting for
rubber ducks and singing songs around the campfire. They then walked around the big field and ended
the morning with a lovely picnic lunch! Over £600 has already come in for the Meningitis Trust, and we
are still awaiting a few more sponsor forms so we are extremely pleased and grateful for all your support
for this important cause.
Both the older classes have been learning about postal workers this week. Each class has its own 'Post
office' and the children have had great fun writing letters, putting them in envelopes and sticking on stamps!
The younger children have been retelling the story of the Gruffalo and have made the most beautiful
display which they all took part in decorating.
Reception - Although it was a little bit on the cold side, Reception also had great fun doing the Toddle Waddle with
the Nursery on Tuesday. The duck treasure hunt was very exciting: Mr Lee had hidden them very well! We’d like
to say thank you to all the mummies and daddies for sponsoring us, and a very big well done to all the children!
We said a sad goodbye to Mrs Lock, who left us at the end of this week as Mrs Bird returns on Monday after her
maternity leave. However we will be welcoming Mrs Lock back to Copthorne Pre-Prep at the beginning
of the Autumn Term as we will be needing extra teachers for the next academic year, so it is only a
temporary farewell! I am sure you will all join me in saying a huge thank you to her for all her sterling
work since September – in the Reception classroom as well as around the department. Her piano playing
at Assemblies will be particularly missed!
Year 2 - have been learning all about the wedding at Cana this week in RE and have
written very thoroughly on the subject as you can tell from this piece by Abigail:
One day in Cana Mary and Jesus were invited to a wedding. The trouble was that there
was no more wine! Mary called a few servants and said ‘Now do what Jesus tells you to do
please’ Jesus said to fill jugs with water and serve it to the most popular guest. When a
servant gave it to the popular guest said ‘ oh, this wine is fabulous! Feed it to all the guests.
Halleluiah’ The servant was puzzled but soon he realised it was wine.
Next week in the Pre-Prep & Nursery
Please sign up for Parent Consultation appointments. (Not obligatory for Years 1 & 2 if happy with mid-year report).

SPORTS RESULTS
WINDLESHAM 7s
The first 7s of the season and a big 20 school tournament at Windlesham. We had spent some time working on defence in training
and we did actually defend very well. Drawn in a difficult group, having said that there were no easy groups, we managed to get
through to the plate quarter final where we beat Brighton College Junior School.
In the semi we had a very tight game against Brighton College Prep which we finished on the wrong side of a 3 tries to 2 defeat. I
would say that I was generally impressed with the level of 7s that we played and certainly the commitment shown was top drawer. I
had a really good day and I think the boys did as well. JC

Seconds Secure Great Win Against Ashdown - Won 51-24
Scorers: Ian H (3), Ted (2), Ross, Jamie M, Jamie W, Ben.
The Seconds returned to winning ways this week with a fine victory over Ashdown this wet Wednesday afternoon. We played 9
a side as Ashdown lost a few players in the days before the match, so we had 3 man scrums with 6 backs, which led to quite an
open game. Ross, Ted and Connel proved to be a very effective 3 man pack, winning the vast majority of scrums regardless of
put ins, and also securing most of the line out balls. This set the platform for good attacking play from our boys, and Jamie M
and Ian made some great attacking runs to get us on the front foot. Ted and Ross both made some powerful runs to score tries
and everyone in the team got stuck in and made tackles when called upon in defence. Ben got a well deserved try, and Jamie W
also scored, showing quick thinking to take a quick penalty and catch our opponents off guard. All in all, a great result boys,
well done everyone and let's have more of the same next week against Brambletye! DJ
Colts A v Ashdown House
It was always going to be difficult to revert to playing 12-a-side rugby, having spent a long time working on the 7-a-side version of
the game with some success, and this was clearly evident in our performance today. We saw lots of lateral running and good ball
retention but not much penetration or commitment to the breakdowns. We ultimately lost the game 24 – 7 although the scoreline
rather flattered our visitors as we came very close to scoring on several occasions. Hugo Hawes was the pick of the forwards and
Ben Kinnear again worked tirelessly. Benjamin Jennings came close on a couple of occasions but was just held up short of the line.
Ali Kroeger and Joe Gache both contributed well.
Tom Flavin looked dangerous on occasions with the ball in hand, James H and Oliver T had some good runs and Jerome had a very
good match at full back, getting involved at every opportunity. Ben Voller as always tackled well and ran elusively with
Matthew Eades and Evan Penlington running and tackling well.
It was a game I felt we could have won had we not concentrated on sevens, so I am hoping for a good performance on Friday at the
Duke of Kent competition. CJ
Men of the Match – Hugo Hawes & Jerome Gore
1st XV v Ashdown House
Suffice to say that this was a frustrating afternoon at the office for the 1 st XV. However I hope that one lesson has been learnt and
that is no matter what the perceived injustices rugby players must always keep their discipline. I think that we would all agree that
this is a game that we could and should have won and yet managed to end up on the wrong end of 20-19 scoreline. Enough said. JC
Colts B v Ashdown House
A Wednesday afternoon of Rugby 7’s was on the menu for the Colts. With Ashdown only able to field 7 we took down 14 boys to
make up a mini tri-nations. Before we get onto the results it is worth mentioning the behavior of all the Colts boys they were
fantastic and plenty of effort stars are coming your way and along with are very welcoming hosts it made for a very enjoyable
afternoon. So onto the action.
Match 1: Ashdown v Copthorne Pussycats
The Copthorne Pussycats team of Tom G, Toby V, Yonis A, Nabil Y, Johnny B, German, Zak K ran in 5 tries in a 25-5 victory. Zak
with 3 tries and Toby V with 2.
Match 2: Ashdown v Copthorne Fluffy Bunnies.
So to the second match could the Fluffy Bunnies match the Pussycats result. With Lani O, Will F, Daniel G, Robbie E, Freddie N,
Jamie F, Sam M making the team up there was plenty of pace and power. Another good victory saw the boys run in 6 tries with a
final score of 30-10. Tries from Sam M 3, Freddie N 2 and Robbie E set a final showdown that might have had even Winnie the
Pooh popping over to watch.
Match 3: Copthorne Pussycats v Copthorne Fluffy Bunnies.
Who to cheer for? In the end both teams played some good rugby which was pleasing to see and the game ended in a 2-2 with the
Pussycats scoring with the last play of the game. Try scorers in the this match were Sam M, Lani, Toby V and Zak.
Well done to all the boys you were all fantastic this afternoon and a thank you to the parents who braved the rain. IP
U8A v Pennthorpe
After walking the long and windy road to the pitch the boys put on their boots and were ready for action, it was a glorious day for
a game of tag and as the whistle went the boys reared into action. It was end to end rugby with both teams playing extremely well,
we were starting to play with some real team work, but unfortunately our tagging still needs some work and this allowed
Pennthorpe to collect some early points with some very good running. But the boys were determined to bring it back with great
running form, Z Collins, B Smith and J Varney. B Heaver managed to perform some great running skills with the help of C Pullen
and H Beckley-Bannerton and when the whistle went for half time the boys had managed to collect two tries.
The second half was more intense with Copthorne wanting to get back into our winning streak but some good defence by A Patel,
the boys managed to control the game for a while but due to unforced errors the game ended with a Pennthorpe win.
I was very pleased in how the boys never gave up in the game and were always ready to try again, good work boys and with some
more training we will be back onto our winning streak. Very proud. WL
U8B v Pennthorpe
After our first game against Hurst we were determined to carry on our winning streak. The boys were all fired up for this one and
with some good running from A Kalania and E Martin-Drew we were off the mark very quick but Pennthorpe were not going to be
a push over, with end to end rugby all through the match this was going to be a game the boys really had to fight for. R Ghosh was
a diamond in defence flying this way and that ripping tags of the opposition as they tried to squeeze through for a try. N Kinnear
and A Ahluwalia were key with some great handling and positional play to allow us to try and stay in Pennthorpe’s half.
The whistle went for half time and with a quick change over and some oranges in the tank the boys were firing on all cylinders and
ready to finish this one off. T Hendrikse had a great half running through Pennthorpe like a knife through butter, the second half
was crazy with real end to end play the boys were playing well spreading out and allowing the ball to work the width of the pitch.
The whistle for full time went and the boys made a valiant effort but unfortunately the final score was
Pennthorpe 6 Copthorne 5.
I was very proud of the boys and how they played and they should all be pleased with what they contributed to the game and I look
forward to our next match. Well done boys, keep up the good work. WL
U11 HOCNET TOURNAMENT AT HURST
The girls were excited to be playing HocNet on Thursday night and were most definitely up for it! This showed in our first 12
minute netball match against Brighton and Hove. Prisha and Chloe were working great together in the shooting ‘D’ with Prisha
getting some fantastic shots on target going straight through the net! Freya had a great game in the middle working well with
Micki to get the ball to the shooters. We won 7-2.
We then had 5 minutes to get ready for hockey before we play Brighton and Hove again. We should have won this game! We had
some great shots on goal and worked the ball down the line with some great crossing from Chloe and Harriet on the wings, to get
the ball into Freya who scored the goal! We then had to defend a bit and with some lovely tackles from Emma and Prisha most of
the time the ball didn’t get passed. Although Eloise was on guard and was producing some excellent saves. Draw 1-1
We then went on to play netball against Cumnor and for this game we knew it could be a tough game so it was Willow’s time to
shine partnering Chloe as the shooters and Prisha went to defence. We played some really nice netball Tori had an excellent game
as well as Harriet getting the ball to Willow, who had a tall GK so she had to work extra hard to get in front and then had to hold
her nerve and shoot, which she did and got it in! We won 2-0.
Next it was hockey against Cumnor and Eloise knew she was in for a tough game but was producing saves all over the place,
although the first save was a little shaky passing it straight back to Cumnor but with some great tackles again from Prisha and
Emma we were safe.
We then had a very intense game of hockey against Hurst, with end to end play. Emma was throwing herself all over the place to
stop Hurst from scoring. Eloise made some fantastic saves to keep us in the game. We had a few shots on target but the Hurst
goalie was on form as well. There was lots of shouting from the sideline which encouraged the girls. We were very unlucky not to
win.
We then played Netball against Hurst and we all knew this was going to be a tough game with the Hurst girls being tall and they
were very quick and had excellent movement. We got the ball into our shooting ‘D’ a few times but we couldn't score the goals.
The defence had a tough game Micki and Prisha worked hard. Excellent work from all the girls in every game.
Thank you to the parents for coming to watch.
Player of the match - Hockey : Eloise
Players of the match - Netball : Freya and Prisha
A great evening of hockey and netball was had by all. Both the U11 and U13 teams ended the tournament in second place behind
the hosts, Hurst. LJ
U13 HOCNET TOURNAMENT AT HURST
The girls were all very excited about the HOCNET Tournament, it was really nice to be doing something a little bit different!
Our first game was netball v BHHS. So the girls took to the court, most of them playing in their shin pads as there was no time to
change!
A really close game ensued with some nervous shots on goal from Sofia and Charlotte and missed chances in the first few minutes.
However, the girls soon settled into their normal flow and the game started to take shape. Amber and Jess once again dominated
the defending circle and rebounded any loose ball, to Sian, Roselly and Abi. Charlotte and Sofia soon got their eye in and we won
this game 4-2.
Hockey v BHHS - the opposition got their own back in this game, although we played some really nice hockey, the BHHS
forwards broke through our defence and scored. Having not picked up our hockey sticks for a while it wasn’t a bad result!
Back to the Netball courts v Cumnor. Well, it’s not often we get to beat Cumnor, but the girls did it in style tonight. Taking
advantage of the fact that Cumnor had entered their ‘B’ team, the Copthorne girls enjoyed a 10-1 win. Fabulous netball!
Hockey v Cumnor - Once again the Copthorne girls picked up their hockey sticks and managed to penetrate the Cumnor defence
with some great attacking play from Sofia, Charlotte and Abi. Fabulous defending from Katie and Frosty prevented the Cumnor
girls any chances at Fran in goal. Won 2-0
Hockey v Hurst - Playing on their brilliant new astro, the Hurst girls bombarded our defence with attack after attack. They were
clearly the stronger team, and the Copthorne girls were outplayed by a team well used to playing on an astro turf surface.
We lost 0-4.
Netball v Hurst - Revenge!! This was the best game of the evening for me. The Copthorne girls went down 1-3 in the first 3
minutes but managed to find another gear and really stepped up their game, fighting for every ball and winning this game 4-3!
Brilliant netball girls, well done to you all!
A fabulous evening of hockey and netball with Hurst the deserved winners, but the Copthorne girls can really hold their heads up,
as we were definitely the best netball team there - having won all of our matches!
Congratulations to Freya and Sofia who both won the hockey skills competition against the clock!
A huge thank you to Miss Jones for managing the U11 team. To all our wonderful parents for braving the cold weather to come
and support , and a special mention to Victoria Finnegan for helping to transport the girls to Hurst. MJ
