Early Bergen County Families, compiled by Pat Wardell, 130 Crestview Drive, Englewood, FL 34223 • [email protected] -- O -- The family groups represented in this collection may not be complete, because information was entered bit by bit as I found it or happened upon it; I have not done any systematic research on these families. Because they do not compose whole family genealogies, these listings are arranged differently from most genealogical records or histories. Each listing is a family group, and is arranged and filed alphabetically under the name of the head of the family. Names are generally in alphabetical order (disregarding spelling variations and middle names), then in approx. chronological order. The first sorting is by surname (mixing together any and all spelling variations), then by given name, then by approximate birthdate (when known) in approximate chronological order. For easier reference, surnames in headings are grouped together under the most common spelling usage that evolved in this geographical location, regardless of individualistic spellings in the records themselves. Cross references are used in most cases where surname spellings substantially vary. Within the quoted records, the individual spellings have been (mostly) retained because they sometimes provide clues (although in general—but with exceptions—they seem to largely reflect the record keeper's particular orthography and not always, at this early period, any special family preference). Those interested can see the variety and evolvement of a particular name’s spelling and the interesting and sometimes amusing attempts at phonetic reproduction. Keep in mind that before names and spellings were standardized, records reflected the individualistic whim of the particular recorder (often two different spellings of the same name within the same document). In addition, all records were handwritten, and sometimes deciphering a handwritten name in early records can be quite challenging! So expect to search under all possibilities of spelling (for both surnames and given names). Given names are grouped together without regard for middle initials or middle names. Because middle names and/or initials are sometimes used, sometimes not used in various records, it seemed simplest to arrange entries as if the middle names or initials did not exist. Usually all variations of a given name are grouped together as though spelled one way: Jan, Johannes, John, etc. are all grouped as one (but also look under the other forms). Sources and references are included with each "family" grouping, but may or may not include sources that are cited (or are obvious, such as baptismal records, etc.) within the narrative or listing itself. As with any compiled genealogical record, researchers should regard this information as leads and clues, and should verify all data with independent research. I welcome, and would be grateful for, any additions or corrections, especially with source citations. copyright 2012 Patricia A. Catharina Smit son of Lodowyck op den Dyck & (banns: 24 Sep 1643 dau. of Richard Smith & Gertrude van Wesel NYC Ref Ch) bp. 25 Sep 1605 Willibrord’s Ch, Wesel, Germany bp. Gysbert Op Dyck came to New Amsterdam before 1638. In the record of their marriage banns, they were: Gysbert op dyck, j.m. Van Wesel, en Catharina Smit, j.d. Uyt Oudt Engelt. Gysbet Op Dyck was an officer of the Dutch West India Company; a Commander of Fort Good Hope (the site of what is today Hartford, CT), Commissary, one of the Eight Men, Marshal, Tithe-Commissioner, frequently sat in the Council, and assisted in making Indian treaties. Owned a residence on Stone Street, N. Y., the whole of Coney Island (part of which bore his name), a farm at Hempstead and another at Cow Neck, Long Island.1 Gysbert signed his name op d Dyck in his two autograph signatures which have come down to us, Jan. 25, 1644, and Aug. 19, 1649; the same form of signature to his deposition on the Hempstead records at Roslyn, April 3, 1659, is probably also in his own hand. This is the very form in which his father's name was written at the baptism of Gysbert in Wesel. The Pastor at Wesel informs us that this d always stood for den, thus making the op den Dyck which Gysbert's ancestors had been called in Wesel since 1283, and probably earlier. The Dutch Church records in New York call him often op ten Dyck, which also was a frequent form at Wesel. The Dutch documents and official records spell his name as op Dyck, or more frequently Opdyck; the latter form has been followed by the translators and the historians, and it will be followed by us as it was doubtless the name by which Gysbert was generally known among the Dutch here. His Rhode Island descendants, associating with only English-speaking people, wrote their name Updick, and finally Updike; and they wrote Gysbert in its English form, Gilbert.1 ---children of Gysbert Op Dyck & Catharina Smit: • Elisabeth op ten dyck, bp. 27 July 1644 NYC Ref Ch (wit: de Hr. He was orphaned young and was brought up by Lieve Davits. He was trained as a cloth worker and kindred trades. (From Amsterdam Archives) on Monday November 18, 1678 Johannes Outman from Lindegroft and Femmetje Kock, from Amsterdam, both twenty years old from N.S. Voorburghwal, for three consecutive Sundays had their solemn intention to get married called out. They truthfully declared that they were free citizens and pure in blood. Five years later, in 1683, there appeared a declaration of citizenship, on May 20th 1683 Johannes Outman, from Hamburg, Treckwerker, and his betrothed, Femmetje Kock, daughter of Yoost Yanss Kock, during his lifetime a silversmith. It was signed by the community record keeper of Amsterdam.1 Mr. Outman lived on Pearl Street in NYC, and his neighbor was Captain William Kidd, one of the worlds privateers. "Index of original court records of New York" 27 of March, 1691, Libel exhibited by William Kidd against the ship, Perre of Bayonne", Perse Clabire, late master, as lawful prize, with the plea of Johannes Outman, claiming one quarter part of said ship, together with Captain Kidd's answer. Also the decree of court condemning the vessel. Johannes Outman's business was on Water Street, back to back of his home. His will states he left to his son-in-law, husband of daughter Anna (Benjamin d'Harriette), and Jan Smith, husband of daughter Judith, all my house and lands and lots in New York for 99 years after my decease, if my wife Femmetje shall live so long, in trust, that they shall suffer my wife to enjoy all the rights and benefits of the same. After my wife's decease, I leave my son, John Outman, all that dwelling house where I now live, and the lot of ground where it stands, except sixteen feet in length and breadth of my house on the dock. I leave my daughter Anna, wife of Benjamin d'Harriette of New York, merchant, twenty-five pounds. I leave my daughter Judith, wife of Jan Smith, all that my dwelling house situates and now standing on the dock behind the dwelling house where I now Live, and also eighteen feet in the rear for a yard. I give my grandson Benjamin d'Harriette, after my wife's decease, all that my garden and lot of land lying on Gold Street. I leave all of my personal estate to my wife Femma. I make my sons-in-law executors. (Signed) Johannes Outman, January 8, 1714.1 Femmetje Kock was born in Amsterdam Holland in 1654, duaghter of Yoost Yanss Kock, orphaned, and in the care of Raelof Zweeries, Guardian. Her father had been a silversmith. After the death of her husband, Femmetje carried on her husband's business until her death in 1732, Her son John did not stay in New York to help her. In her will, she wrote, ...I, Phebe Outman, widow of Johannes Outman, being sick, I leave my daughter Annie, wife of Benjamin d'Harriette, Merchant, and my daughter Judith, wife of Samual Vincent, Mariner, all my household goods, furniture, plate, and jewels and clothes.
