Dumont microsurgery
forceps with microblunted, atraumatic tips
Dumont #L5
Outils Dumont S.A., Switzerland, has supplied their regular forceps to the research and medical
professions for many years. Now, in design collaboration with a foremost European supplier of
microvascular instruments, Dumont puts their over one-hundred years of experience with hand
fashioned tools into these precision instruments.
The sides of these forceps are distinctively ribbed providing a better holding surface for maximum
control of the instrument. The shanks are arched toward each other to transmit more holding
strength to the points. The smooth inside surfaces at the tips will, with gentle pressure, close flat
for 5 mm, increasing the total holding area considerably. The microscopically matched tips are
gently blunted to prevent tissue puncture.
The Inox steel alloy optimizes both stain resistance and hardness. From the middle of the shank to
the tips of the instrument the inside and outside surfaces are highly finished under the microscope.
These special microsurgery forceps are also recommended as micro needle holders because of their
gently blunted, atraumatic tips.

DUMONT® FORCEPS
When choosing Dumont forceps, consider:
1. The style and shape of forceps you want
2. The fineness of the tips you require
3. The alloy best suited to your work
Styles
Dumont forceps come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, from the world famous straight #5 to the extremely popular curved #7.
Below you will find a brief description of the most popular styles.
Dumont 2: Straight forceps with wide but thin tips often referred to as Mouse Laminectomy Forceps because of their popularity for breaking off
delicate bone during mouse laminectomies.
Dumont 3: Long straight forceps with course tips. Very popular in low magnification procedures or where longer, thicker forceps are needed.
Dumont 4: Straight forceps very similar to the #5 but with broader shanks and a slightly courser tip.
Dumont 5: The most popular style of Dumont straight forceps with fine tips which come in several styles including #55, #5CO, #5SF, #5XL and #5/45.
55: Similar to #5 but with lighter shanks which give the forceps a lighter spring action.
5CO: Similar to #55 but with even finer shanks producing the lightest spring action and longest meeting surface of any Dumont.
5SF: Standard #5 but with the finest tips ever produced by Dumont.
5XL: Similar to #5 but longer.
5/45: Standard #5 but angled 45°.
Dumont 6: Sharply angled forceps with courser tips. Perfect for access to difficult areas.
Dumont 7: Large radius, curved forceps with fine tips. The most popular curved style.
Medical: Available in almost any style. Denotes distinctive ribbing in the handle to maximize grip.
Tip Profiles
FORCEPS
Once you have decided which style Dumont is right for you, choose the right tip profile for your application. While not all styles come in all tip profiles,
below is a guide to help you decide which is right for you. The dimensions of these tips vary with each style. For specific dimensions please see each item.
Standard
The standard Dumont tips are designed for the most exacting work under the microscope.
In general, standard tips are used under magnification up to 20X.
Biologie
The imprint “Biologie” identifies forceps especially produced for the biological sciences. In overall shape and dimension these forceps are identical in
style but have the added feature of tips which are approximately twice as fine.
Dumont’s finest tips
We are frequently asked for the Dumont forceps with the finest tip. These forceps are four times finer than Biologie tipped Dumonts.
Please see page 87 and 91 for these items.
Alloys
Now that you have selected the right style and tip of forceps, you can move on to picking the right alloy for your application.
Carbon
Will stand hard use of the tips but has the disadvantages of staining easily, not being autoclavable, and being highly magnetic.
Inox
Is an alloy which has a certain amount of chromium added to carbon steel. This results in some loss of hardness but offers good stainless qualities.
Inox forceps are magnetic.
Dumoxel
Is a patented Dumont alloy which provides optimal stainless steel features while still retaining adequate hardness. This combination makes it the
most requested type of metal in Dumont forceps. Dumoxel is nonmagnetic.
Titanium
Forceps have several distinct advantages. They are fully corrosion resistant. For instance, salt water is non-reactive to this alloy. Although not as hard
as Inox, it is a more flexible metal. It is also 40% lighter than stainless steel and 100% nonmagnetic.
Dumostar
After years of research and testing, Dumont has developed this advanced alloy for the express purpose of maintaining fine tips. Made of 40% cobalt,
Dumostar is much more durable and elastic than the best stainless steels. It has a very high resistance to corrosive solvents such as sea water and
strong acids and also has a temperature resistance of up to 550°C (1022°F). FST has tested Dumont’s alloys in everyday use by some of our best
customers and found Dumostar forceps to last, on average, four times longer than Dumoxel and Inox. We believe that, despite its higher initial cost,
Dumostar is the most cost effective alloy for the research lab. Dumostar forceps are nonmagnetic.

The Most Finely Executed Points
Produced Anywhere!
Two of the most popular forceps are Nos. 11370-40 and 11370-42. They
have the most finely executed points available on forceps. They are
extremely light and superbly balanced. The spring action is gentle to
provide an extended fatigue-free working period. The shanks are slim for
better visibility and arched in such a way as to extend the maximum force
to the tips. The tips close flat for 6 mm from the points to give a larger
than usual holding area. The tips themselves have been expertly finished
under the microscope at 40x magnification.
Nos. 11399-80 and 11399-87 are extra delicate for precision microsurgery
or dissection. The bottom part, which provides gentle spring action, is
also slim to reduce weight. The grip portion is built up to give the “right”
weight to the fingers. The holes provide a good finger-hold and also help
to reduce weight. The tips have been finished to exceptional fineness
under 40x magnification.

Extra Fine Graefe Forceps
Graefe Forceps
This version of the Graefe forceps is similar to the standard
pattern with the exception that it is lighter and finer. The width
of the tips is only 0.5 mm instead of the regular 0.8 mm. They
are well suited for a variety of situations where light, fine,
forceps are required.
The Graefe forceps are one of the most popular forceps for
fine surgical procedures. They have a delicate pattern with
an overall length of 10 cm and 0.8 mm wide tips. Finely
serrated or with fine 1x2 teeth and gentle spring action.
