The “Big Jubilee Lunch” is one of the official
celebrations of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee
Celebrations over the Jubilee Weekend 2- 5 June
2012.
The initiative was started by the Eden Project in 2009
believing that the world can be a better place through
people working together. Holding an event such as a
lunch (big or small), a street party, a picnic, a
barbeque – anything where people can get together,
with a common theme of having fun, share interests,
collectively celebrate and build friendships with
neighbours, community and faith groups and others –
is an excellent way of achieving this. It could be a
charity event or just a reason to celebrate 60 years of
our Queen’s reign and to share friendship and fun.
The day for the “Big Jubilee Lunch” is Sunday 3 June
2012 and groups from all over Lancashire are being
invited to take part. Rotary International, amongst
many others, is a key supporter.

BACKGROUND TO GURU KA LANGAR
The langar is a free community meal of blessed food, which is served after services at Sikh
Gurdwaras [Sikh place of worship] for all, regardless of caste, creed, gender or religion. At
the langar, only vegetarian food is served, to ensure that all people, regardless of their
dietary restrictions, can eat as equals. Langar is open to Sikhs and non-Sikhs alike.
The institution of the Sikh langar, or free kitchen, was started by the first Sikh Guru, Sri Guru
Nanak Dev Ji. It was designed to uphold the principle of equality between all people
regardless of religion, caste, colour, creed, age, gender or social status, a revolutionary
concept in the caste-ordered society of 16th-century India, where Sikhism began. In addition
to the ideals of equality, the tradition of langar expresses the ethics of sharing, community,
inclusiveness and oneness of all humankind. The Langar provides Sikhs to undertake
“Sewa” - the concept of free service to benefit mankind.
