This year, Spirit Week was January 22 -January 25, and consisted of fun dress-down days and exciting activities. Twin Day, Decade Day, and the 8th grade vs. teacher volleyball game were just a few of the favorites. Mrs. Welch, our school librarian, hosted a book fair in the library for students to purchase books, and during the week, all classes collected “change for charity” to benefit the St. Vincent dePaul Society. On Thursday evening, there was an open house for parents to come and view the various projects the students have been working on followed by an entertaining Thanks to the Student Council and their moderator, Mrs. Karas, Spirit Week was a huge success, and many students say that they can’t wait to do it again next year. An action packed game between the 8th graders and the teachers. S CIENCE F AIR If Ms. Hartley, our middle school science teacher, had one word to describe Science Fair, it would be “phenomenal”. Science Fair is the oral presentation and written report of the specific test that was chosen by the student. This year’s Science Fair will be held at OLPH on February 23, from 8:00 to N EWSPAPER Staff: Anthony Baum Tessa Derleth Jax Geist Emily Havener Chase Jones Hannah Moore Natalee Patel Hannah Seckman Assistance from: Ms. Bove Mrs. Donovan Mrs. Havener By Anthony Baum 1:30 in the school gymnasium. Students will be judged in their use of the Scientific Method, knowledge gained, clarity of expression, and originality. In order to receive a “superior” score (highest rating), the student must receive points that range from 36-40. If you receive a “superior” rating at OLPH, you will be eligible to go on to the District Science Fair held at Columbus State University. If you receive a “superior “ rating there, you will be eligible to go to State Science Fair held at The Ohio State University. Last year, 13 students were eligible to attend the State Science Fair and six actually attended. With this great performance, our school won the Harold C. Shaw award. We were one of eight schools throughout Ohio to receive this honor. Ms. Hartley says that this was the highlight of her teaching career. Congratulations to the 8th grade students, and good luck this year to the 7th grade. T HE S AINTS S ENTINEL P AGE 2 S TOCK M ARKET A group of students from the seventh grade classes at Our Lady of Perpetual Help, along with various other Ohio schools, participated in an activity called “The Stock Market Game”. BY TESSA D ERLETH Mary Benedetto, Tessa Derleth, Hannah Johns, Alex Jarrett, and Abi Wuichner. First of all, people usually bully because of one of two reasons. A lot of times they don’t feel good about themselves and are sad, so they take it out on you. They could also be jealous of you and put you down to make themselves feel better. This game is played by buying and selling stock using pretend money. Each group starts out with $100,000 in funds, and as they purchase stock, they either gain or lose money based on the stock that was purchased. Our group did particularly well and placed 2nd in their age division within the state of Ohio. The members included: MacKenzie Chapman, Kayla Hyme, Lexi Forgacs, J IGSAW Did you ever wish that you could be the teacher? Well for the 7th grade students, that wish came true! In Ms. Bove’s religion class, the 7th graders got the opportunity to teach for one week. The project was called “Jigsaw”. The students were divided up in four groups of five or six students. Each group got a separate week to teach. During the week the students were required to teach the chapter that they were assigned to. They were required to prepare a lesson plan, make a study guide, plan activities, and give the other students a test. The students got really creative with their teaching. Some examples of what each group did throughout the week were a tic-tac-toe game, a basketball shooting game, a hangman game, a telephone game, and lastly, one group did a carnival theme with a “I’m being bullied and I don’t know what to do. Why do people bully?” 7th Grade Stock Market Members If you are feeling bullied, you should first tell a teacher, parent, or a trusted adult. If it continues, ignore them or do not act bothered. If they see that you aren’t bugged by them, they will most likely get bored and stop. Lastly, you could try being extra nice to them. This may be hard, but maybe all they need is a bit of kindness. I hope this helps! B Y N ATALEE P ATEL “Wheel of Wow” and a bowling game. Ms. Bove stated, “The purpose of the Jigsaw project is for the students teaching to learn the chapter better. You have to know the material in order to teach it.” All the 7th graders really enjoyed being the teacher and would like to do it again! Yours truly, Georgia “My mom always says I need to do my homework right after school, but I would rather do it right before bed. What should I do? I have to agree with your mom in this instance. The sooner you get your homework done, the more time you will have to do other things you like, without having to worry about it. You could always compromise a bit, too. You could try taking a short break when you get home from school, and then do your homework. That way you get it done early, but you also can relax a little bit. Good luck! If you want to have fun with wind in your face and you want to have pure fun, then you should join the Ski Club. Ski Club is one the best clubs you can join for many reasons. Mainly, you get to hang out with your friends and have a great time. You’re probably thinking, “it never snows in Ohio, so how will the little bit that does fall, fill a giant hill?”. The answer to that question would be “snowmakers”. Mad River Mountain has 133 fan guns to blow out snow on 100% of the mountain, so no matter what your backyard looks like, Mad River is always going to be white and snowy. Plus, not only do they have snow, they have “groomed” snow, which means it doesn’t have any ruts, ditches, or anything else that would cause you to fall or jeopardize your fun time. Even if you don’t know how to ski, there is an option for you. Mad River offers lessons. Then, after you have mastered the bunny hill, you can advance to a more difficult hill and keep moving up. There are 24 different trails to ski, plus a terrain park. So no matter what level of skier/snowboarder you are, you’ll never get bored. Another great thing about Mad River is that they have 14 “lifts” to help you get up the hill as fast as possible so you can go back down and do it all again. Mad River Mountain also has a food court with hotdogs, hamburgers, pop, candy, water, and a lot more. If you don’t have equipment like skis, snowboards, boots, or a helmet, you can rent those items when you arrive. And...if you get cold, you can go into the toasty warm lodge with a fireplace, music, food, and even live entertainment. So, the bottom line is….if you’re not in Ski Club and you want to have fun, then you may want to consider joining next year. T HE S AINTS S ENTINEL P AGE 4 W HAT IS YOUR FAVORITE TV SHOW ? ParaNorman is about a kid named Norman who has the ability to see ghosts. Even though he can see ghosts, his family and friends don’t believe that he can. Norman doesn’t have many friends and he gets bullied by the other kids at school. One day, Norman sees his crazy uncle that can also see ghosts. He tells Norman that the witch of the city will come back and haunt the people of the city. Norman and his friends will have to save the day….but how? You will have to watch to find out.
