Keynote: Making Member Connections: kWhs, iPhones and Lattes
Bill LeBlanc, Chief Instigation Agent, E Source, and President, Boulder Energy Group
Members love their iPhones, their Starbucks, and even Alexa. But why do certain products or
marketing campaigns catch on, while others fade into obscurity? And how can utilities become
more relevant, and be perceived as true trusted energy partners for the new energy
consumer? The answers lie in the fickle area of social sciences and consumer behavior.
Discovering insights into the seeming irrational consumer can provide essential guidance in
utilities’ quests to meet evolving member needs while building the co-op’s brand. Through
market research data, stories, and sometimes humorous man-on-the-street videos, you’ll gain

community solar and other energy services. Questions will include:

Who Touched the Thermostat? Turning Demand Management into a Member Benefit
For decades, cooperatives have deployed residential load control programs to manage peak
demand, typically using switches to cycle air conditioners and water heaters. The rapid consumer
adoption of advanced Internet-connected thermostats offers cooperatives a new option for
demand management that can also enhance member satisfaction and engagement. This session
will provide an overview of how smart thermostats can deliver member-centric demand response,
and will showcase a cooperative’s use of innovative marketing and promotional strategies to
launch a thermostat program in the summer of 2016 that surpassed all expectations for success.

It's Not What We Say; It's What Our Members Hear
We work in a highly technical field – one dominated by jargon and engineers. Too often our
consumers don’t understand what we’re trying to say. The Edison Electric Institute (EEI), in
partnership with the language strategy firm maslansky + partners, undertook a major consumerbased research project to help our industry communicate about what we do and the value we
provide in language consumers understand. They’ll lead you through some eye-opening findings
and will help you discover the exact words and phrases to use in order to effectively connect with
your members.

Seminole Electric Cooperative Solar Facility Tour
Note: this tour begins with a 30 minute breakout session that is open to all, even if you are not
going on the tour.
One of the largest G&T cooperatives in the country, Seminole just completed a 2.2-megawatt solar
facility under the Cooperative Solar Initiative. The Cooperative Solar Program started in Georgia
and provides a unique approach/roadmap for cooperatives who are interested in adding solar to
their energy portfolios. The tour will begin with a presentation at the Marriott by Ryan Hart,
Seminole’s Manager of Corporate Communications and Energy Policy, who will provide
background information about the project, including the Cooperative Solar Initiative marketing.
Participants will then go to Seminole’s Cooperative Solar field to tour the 8,000-paneled solar
facility. An engineer will be on hand to talk about some of the unique aspects of the system and its
grounds. There will be plenty of opportunities for photos, questions, and answers. Box lunches will
be provided.
Florida’s Natural Growers Cooperative
Florida’s Natural Growers cooperative was formed in 1933 by a group of citrus farmers. Its slogan:
“We own the land, we own the trees, we own the company” has prevailed for more than 80 years.
Florida’s Natural Growers is now the largest citrus cooperative in Florida and the second largest
orange juice producer in the country, representing more than 1,000 grower-members. In addition
to getting a tour of Florida’s Natural and visiting the Grove House and gift shop, you’ll get to spend
time with a member of Florida’s Natural Growers marketing team for an informal chat about how
another major co-op develops their messaging, handles social media, deals with devastating
weather events (sound familiar?) and more. Box lunches will be provided.
