Bob (of blessed memory) and Ruth Krandel
to Receive First
Temple Emanu-El Lifetime Achievement Award
This year the Board of Trustees of Temple Emanu-El created a new award to recognize significant long-term contributions to our
synagogue. The Board established the following criteria to identify award candidates and to select recipients:
Longevity – member of the synagogue for at least twenty (20) years;
Engagement – consistently engaged in and an active member of the Temple community throughout this time;
Embodiment of Jewish Values – Temple interactions and relationships embody core Jewish values;
Financial Support – consistently provided financial support commensurate with his/her means to Temple Emanu-El through
annual dues commitments, donations to the General and other funds, and/or specific Temple projects;
Leadership - held a Temple “lay-leadership” position, such as member of the Board of Trustees or committee chair, auxiliary
(Sisterhood, Brotherhood, etc.) chair, capital project chair or “champion”, etc.;
Impact - has had an impact on the long-term success and sustainability of Temple Emanu-El and/or the well-being of its
members.
Because they so perfectly exemplify all of the qualities listed above, it is with
great honor that we announce that Bob (of Blessed Memory) and Ruth Krandel
are the very first recipients of this award. Their involvement with Temple
Emanu-El dates back to their earliest moments in San Jose, when they visited
Ruth’s mother and sister, liked the community, and returned to be married in
1957 by Rabbi Gitin. Following Bob’s senior year at college, they settled in San
Jose in 1958, making it their permanent home.
They had very few Jewish friends until they went to college where they met, Bob
at Tulane, and Ruth at Newcomb, an all-female affiliate of Tulane. It was in San
Jose that they found the Jewish life that they had lacked growing up in
Louisiana and Mississippi. Ruth’s first involvement with Temple began with
Sisterhood. A “Life Member,” through the years, she served on the Board,
chaired and sponsored many events including the Sisterhood Donor Luncheons. For all her dedication, Sisterhood recognized
Ruth as a “Woman of Valor”- its highest award. With son Steve and daughter Lori (Ghan) growing up in the Temple, attending
Religious School, and being leaders in the youth group and confirmation classes, Ruth became a member of the original
Religious School Board- chairing that board as well.
Ruth and Bob had a special relationship with Rabbi Gitin. He officiated at Steve’s bar mitzvah and both Lori and Steve’s
confirmations, and he co-officiated at both of their weddings. Rabbi Gitin also introduced Bob to the Rotary International service
organization, in which Bob was active throughout his professional life.
For forty-nine years, Bob’s engaging personality, his vision, and his skills benefited the congregation in so many ways. He joined
the Temple Board of Trustees beginning in the early 1980s.When the congregation encountered a very difficult situation in 1983,
he assisted the elected president to such an extent that he was considered the de facto president. Bob was formally elected
president first for 1983 – 86, then for 1994 – 96, and we asked him to serve once again for 2006 - 2007. Early in his tenure on
the board, Bob recognized that family roles were changing as more women worked outside the home, so he advocated
restructuring Board responsibilities to make these volunteer positions less daunting. Other Temple presidents and Board
members often sought Bob’s advice, and he was most generous with his time
While Bob was serving on the Board, Ruth found many other ways to contribute. She either chaired, co-chaired, or collaborated
on most Temple fundraising and “gala” events, including our 135th, 140th, and 150th celebrations, and she has always been
well-known for encouraging others to participate. Bob and Ruth led or were key participants in many efforts to beautify and
modernize our synagogue, including the Temple House renovation in 1988, the Temple House sound system upgrade, and the
Religious School renovation in 2005, just to name a few. Two beautiful paintings of Jerusalem grace the back wall of the social
hall courtesy of Bob and Ruth. Currently Ruth is making it possible to provide air-conditioning in our sanctuary.

2 Lifetime Achievement (cont.)
Ritual Committee
Following Bob’s untimely passing in 2007, Ruth was elected
to the presidency for 2007-08 where she could bring her own
energy and vision to that role. Ruth collaborated with JoAnn
Shank in renovating the Temple House restrooms- performing
much of the design and construction ”legwork” herself. Rabbi
Magat had often said “wouldn’t it be great if we could buy “the
cottage” (the house on Myrtle Street adjacent to the synagogue). When it became available, Ruth- appreciating the benefit to the congregation- purchased it and donated it to the
Temple as a meeting place and as temporary lodging for Temple visitors. Going forward in 2014 and with Ruth’s blessing,
the cottage will be rented as a residence and serve as an endowment for the congregation.
One of Tel Aviv’s little-known secrets is its thriving reggae
subculture. It is driven by Ethiopian Jews; literally one of
the ‘Lost Tribes’ now called Beta Israel. The majority of Ethiopian Jews arrived in Israel via special Boeing 747’s during
May of 1991. With the coming anniversary of that event and
the strife in Sudan flaring back up it is a great time to revisit
the story of Operations Moses and Solomon – two of Israel’s
prouder moments.
When Israel guaranteed citizenship to Jews around the
world, a few groups in Ethiopia and Sudan claimed Jewish
ancestry and citizenship. The legend was that after the
Queen of Sheba visited King Solomon some of her retinue
converted and carried their new religion to what is today
Yemen. When the area was conquered in the 700’s AD these
groups crossed the Gulf of Aqaba and settled in modern Ethiopia and Sudan. A group of rabbi’s verified that these were
indeed long forgotten Jews and should be Israeli citizens.
Not too long ago Ruth and Jim Heerwagen spearheaded the
revitalization of the Temple’s Endowment Committee. Because of their efforts and those of the other members of the
committee, the endowment fund is growing to ensure the future of the synagogue and future generations of Jews.
The difficulty was in reaching Israel. The journey through
northern Sudan and Egypt is filled with dangerous people
and a hostile environment. In 1985 a civil war broke out in
Ethiopia and thousands of Beta Israel were placed in refugee
camps in Sudan. With casualties mounting, the Mossad put
together an operation to airlift refugees out. Recently declassified documents show that they were aided by the Sudanese government as well as the United States CIA. Over two
months, dozens of TEA Airlines flights from Sudan to Brussels were secretly re-routed to Israel. Operation Moses was
unfortunately cut short when its existence was revealed and
the outcry from other Arab states caused the Sudanese to
withdraw support. Still, over six thousand people had been
airlifted to safety.
In addition to being a dynamic duo at Temple, Bob and Ruth
have been a force in civic activities. Ruth served on the Santa
Clara County Grand Jury, and she has given generously of
both her time and money to such organizations as Hospice of
the Valley, Jewish Family Services, and Hillel- just to name a
few. She and Bob led a “mission” to Israel for the Jewish Federation; Bob also served on the Federation board as well as
being its president. Bob and Lee Axelrad conceived of and
were the prime movers behind the creation of Chai House,
where Bob put his development and financial skills to good
use- not the least of which was obtaining support for the project from HUD (the federal Housing and Urban Development
department). One of Bob’s favorite Rotary International activities was the Intel-sponsored “Project Enterprise,” a leadership
conference for high school juniors that teaches them about
establishing their own business enterprises.
Israel continued to assist Beta Israel refugees in reaching the
Holy Land and the situation reached a crisis point in 1991.
Developments in the Ethiopian civil war meant that the safety of more than fourteen thousand Jewish refugees would
probably not survive the coming weeks. The Israeli government had to act quickly and, with some help from the US, got
the Ethiopian government to allow them to arrange
transport. El-Al’s fleet of three Boeing 747’s were taken off
duty and stripped of their seats and any superfluous accessories to allow for more passengers. Over thirty-six hours the
air force flew back and forth, saving all fourteen thousand
refugees. The record for most individuals on a single flight
set then – at 1,122 passengers – still stands.
L’dor V’dor…from generation to generation: Ruth and Bob’s
children Steve Krandel and Lori Ghan continue as members,
and Steve serves on the Board of Trustees. Their grandchildren Brent and Matthew Ghan and Kelsi and Kevin Krandel
have all celebrated their Bar/Bat Mitzvahs at Temple with
Rabbi Magat. Both Kelsi and Kevin were leaders in their BBYO
groups, and Brent and Matt have been very active as leaders
in the Temple’s Youth Group. Furthermore, Matt has become
an important part of the religious school staff. Clearly the
leadership “torch” has passed to the next generation.
What strikes me most about the story of the Beta Israel is
how we can overcome the greatest odds. Everyone faces moments which seem impossible. While we in the United States
will, hopefully, never face the extreme situations of Sudan
and Ethiopia, that does not make our challenges any less
important. It is inspiring that as a people we can make such
miracles happen as Operations Moses and Solomon. They
are a reminder that as a people we not only have a great history, but that we continue to do great things.
The Beta Israel’s struggles did not finish when they arrived in
the Holy Land. In total, almost eighty thousand people had
arrived with nothing more than the shirts on their backs.
They were strangers in a strange land and did not speak its
languages. They still struggle with racism and lack of political representation. Still, they are alive and, as the thriving
reggae culture shows, are building themselves better lives. As
Jews have proved time and again; even in the darkest hour,
hope springs eternal.
The new Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented to
Ruth at the Temple’s Annual Meeting on Tuesday, June 17,
2014. Please join us and- while you’re there, wander about
the social hall as well as other rooms to see all of the plaques
listing their names. You’ll see that their impact spans time
and space.

4 Membership
Member Highlight
Shalom, Chavarim!
Each month we will highlight a current member and a new
member. Maybe you have something in common with these
members. What a way to make a new friend!! Reach out and
congratulate or welcome these members.
Over 40 years ago, in the early 1970’s, Silicon Valley was
booming. Temple Emanu-El, the only reform synagogue in
San Jose at the time, was getting new members from all over
the United States. They were excited to be here, but they often had to leave behind their parents, their grandparents,
their brothers and sisters. When it came time for the Jewish
holidays they were alone and far from their original homes.
Our Temple president, Lee Axelrad of blessed memory, suggested we create small groups within the Temple— groups
that would become the extended family for all the newcomers.
Bob & Judy Levy have been
members for 11 years after attending High Holy Day services
with Rachel who insisted they
join so she could study Judaism! They have been a very active part of our congregation.
Judy is currently the Sisterhood
Co-President. Bob is currently
running for a seat on the San
Jose City Council. They have
three college age children; Eric 25 at UC San Diego PhD program in Bioinformatics. He is engaged to be married next
year.; Aaron 22 at UC Davis, graduating June 2014 in sustainable agriculture; and Rachel 20, at UC Santa Cruz.
Eleanor and Richard Rusnak organized a meeting and lo and
behold, not only did the newcomers attend but also long-time
congregants who wanted to reach out and make new friends-to find a sense of connection within the larger community.
And so the havurah program of small social groups within
Temple Emanu-El began.
The oldest havurah, Havurah Daled, is active today over 40
years later, with representatives of 9 out of the 10 original
member units still belonging. Back then it was a family affair
with the youngest child a toddler and the oldest celebrating
her Bat Mitzvah. Just imagine what a lifetime has been
shared by the individuals in Havurah Dalet; B’nai Mitzvot,
Confirmation, college graduations, weddings, grandchildren,
and their weddings! They comforted each other during difficult times, through illness and the loss of loved ones. The
original members are now veterans of life and their activities
have changed and evolved, but today Havurah Daled continues on as a a close knit family.
What is your favorite Jewish food & why?
We both love Mediterranean food like hummus and baba ghanoush. Both are a weekly staple in our fridge. As for Jewish
food, we love to make our holiday latkes with applesauce and
sour cream.
What book is on your bedside?
Bob is reading Farm City: The Education of an Urban Farmer,
the true story of a woman in Oakland who tells her journey of
creating an inner city farm in the back of her apartment lot.
Judy just read Time magazine’s article on “Being Mindful,”
learning how to take time to breathe, meditate, and relax in a
stressful world. She reads the article daily!
One of my favorie phrases is L’dor V’dor, from generation to
generation because it implies that our Jewish traditions will
continue. In fact, the members of our newest havurah, who
are in their 20’s and 30’s with babies under a year old, are
beginning to create their own memories as they share life’s
passages together.
What is your hometown?
Bob was born in Cincinnati but grew up in Encino, California
since he was three. Judy moved here from Maryland when
she was four and grew up in West San Jose.
Currently we have 10 havurot with a new one just being organized. A havurah can be whatever its members want it to be.
Mine, Havurah Zion, 40 years old this year, is a group of active senior citizens young in spirit who don’t realize that we
are seniors because we have so much fun! We meet once a
year to plan activities for the coming months. Some of our
events include outings to San Francisco, Chanukah, and
Super Bowl parties, and coming up in April a hike in Pt. Lobos. We’ve even done overnight getaways to Napa and a cruise
to Mexico.
Becca & Allen Wagner are new
members who were married last July. Becca works at Kaiser and Allen
is a facilitator for Apex Adventures.
Becca (maiden name Bronstein) grew
up at Temple Emanu-El starting in
6th grade!
Social experiences in a havurah provide an opportunity for
fun activities, interesting discussions, and the chance to
share life cycle events and Jewish holidays with families and
friends in a warm, relaxed atmosphere. The friends I have
made through my havurah have enriched my life. I wish the
same for all of you.
What is your favorite Jewish food
& why?
Our favorite Jewish food is latkes
because we have been able to incorporate them into Thanksgiving dinner with Allen's family (who isn't
Jewish) and they all love them!
If you would like more information on havurot, please contact
Bobi Levine, Havurah Chairman, at 408-446-1128
What is your hometown?
Becca was born and raised in San Jose. Allen was born in
Milwaukee, WI and was raised in Santa Rosa, CA. He moved
to Santa Cruz for college and that's where we met. We both
now reside in Scotts Valley, CA.
Shalom Chaverim,

make contributions in honor of a birth, birthday, brit milah, baby naming, Bar/Bat Mitzvah, confirmation, graduation,
engagement, wedding, anniversary, promotion, new home, special occasion or just because. You may also make contributions
for get-well wishes, condolences, remembrances and yahrzeits.
