Chomp! Roar! We continued with our dinosaur topic we started last week and have read the rest of the poems, choosing actions to go along with them. It was lovely seeing photos of what the children did over the weekend and they really enjoyed showing them to their friends. They’ve been busy making “fossils” in preparation for their archaeological dig at Al Bateen beach next week. Ask the children to show you what plates, spikes and clubs on dinosaurs are as they have been learning how dinosaurs protected themselves from the likes of the T-Rex and the allosaurus. Finally, all the FS1 children have been working on some surprises for next week. It’s a secret. Shh! All will be revealed soon. FS2 This week the FS2 classes finished off our pirate topic with a very exciting adventure to Bateen beach. While we were there we did all sorts of pirate activities like: pirate paddling; a hunt for buried treasure; Sand art; Pirate ship building; eco pirates and pirate games. We had a fantastic time and it was a wonderful end to such an engaging and interesting topic. We would like to say a big thank you to all of the FS2 parents and your support throughout this topic – it has been great to see that the children have been talking and learning so much about pirates at home, as well as at school. We have really enjoyed seeing them dressing up as pirates and really getting in to the spirit of things through the many activities organized each week. As part of our World Traveller’s theme, the children have been learning about Italy and its culture. The children wrote some really creative story problems with Italian settings. The children have also been consolidating their knowledge of the Inuit culture and they wrote some very descriptive pieces with Arctic settings. Our science sessions have focused on pollination and how seeds are formed. We also examined seed dispersal and the many ingenious ways plants spread their seeds. Math sessions have revolved fractions, models for fractions and equivalent fractions. This week’s art focused on patterns and the use of lines/dots to create texture. Finally, our ICT session challenged the children to fix bugs in computer programs. Well done Year 3 for working so diligently throughout the week! Year 4 After a weekend of recovering from the fantastic residential last week the children have returned to school eager to continue their learning. This week we have been learning about biographies. Using our research of different famous artists we have explored the features of a biography and began writing our own. We have also started planning our next scientific investigation. We have been helping Professor Pip and Professor Pat who have an alarm that will not stop ringing! The children are investigating sound proofing by deciding which material would be best for muffling the sound of the alarm. Some great ideas have been suggested and the children have been trying hard to ensure their investigation is a fair test. We have also been working hard to complete our collages of the UAE using the different collage techniques that we have practiced throughout the term. Gold Cards for Years 3 & 4 Mohamed Al K Yr3, Eissa Yr3, Sam Yr3, Lamis Yr3, Dana Yr4 AL MUNA PRIMARY SCHOOL ABU DHABI MAR 2015 ISSUE NO.22 NEWS in YEAR GROUPS Year 5 and Year 6 Year 5 In Literacy this week we have started work on a newspaper article about the famous Apollo 13 mission to the Moon. We had to think about all the key features of a newspaper article and adapt them to our Apollo 13 article. In Year 5 some of our children have been doing Buddy Reading with Year 2 on a Monday afternoon and they have been demonstrating their amazing reading and comprehension skills! During PE this week we worked with Mr Duggan on developing our cricket skills. In ICT lessons we continued using the Scratch program to design and create our Space game. Year 6 Our year 6 aspiring artists have been hard at work designing, sketching, mixing and painting their cityscapes ready for their exciting exhibition next Wednesday morning. The children started their learning by looking at the work of Lowry and Jen Simons (the talented artist who created the Al Muna reception mural). From here, the children took inspiration and began to think about how they could combine perspective drawing and the UAE skyline to create a thoughtful piece of art. After some experimentation with building placement and features, the children sketched their intended work into their art books. Following this, our little Picassos began working on their canvas pieces which included mixing colours, shades and tints as well as layering their coats of paint for effect. The children are very pleased with their efforts and look forward to sharing their work with you. Their artwork will also be accompanied by a very creative piece of writing they have also been working on which imagines them ‘inside’ a painting! Gold Cards for Years 5 & 6 Armeen Yr5, Umaima Yr5
