The 2016 Georgia Golden Gloves State Championships a success!
Yusef Shabazz
GABA President
Good afternoon everyone,
We need officials for April 9, 2016 at Delgado Boxing Gym (6010-C Sandy Springs Circle,
Atlanta, GA 30328); weigh-ins at 9am; physicals at 2pm; and boxing at 5pm. Please let
me know as soon as possible if you can make it.
Also, at our board meeting on Friday, March 25th, I brought to the attention of the
board members that an Officials Referral Form is required for Level 2, 3, and AIBA
Officials to attend national events.
The board, myself and our Co-Chief of Officials John Paul Jones agree that as a GABA
official you must participate in 50% of LBC shows during the year to receive a referral.
We would like to have active qualified officials represent GABA.
Respectfully,
Angel Franklin

The American Association for the Improvement of Boxing, Inc. (http://www.aaib.org/) is a 501(c)(4) organization
founded in 1969 by Rocky Marciano and Steve Acunto. In association with the AAIB Boxers Assistance
Corporation, a 501(c)(3) organization, it provides funding for scholarships to boxers who are high school
graduates and who have been accepted by a bonified college, provides funds to destitute boxers; and publishes
and distributes instructional information on the science of boxing and boxing safety. Each entity is comprised
solely of volunteers.
Over the last four years, the AAIB distributed over $116,000 for boxers to continue their higher education. The
need for a scholarship for boxers is unique. A variety of private, governmental, and institutional sources in this
country already provide aid based on academics, financial need, and athletics. Athletes who excel in many
sports, such as basketball and football, often receive scholarships due to the college’s support of that particular
sport. However, there are very few collegiate boxing programs in this country. Therefore, there is little financial
assistance for the stand-out amateur boxer who wants to attend college. As a result, although the amateur
boxer might excel in his or her craft, a scholarship is virtually unattainable and the boxer is denied financial
assistance. The AAIB looks to fill this void for the amateur boxer.
The American Association for the Improvement of Boxing (AAIB) Scholarship Application Criteria:
1. The applicant must be a current or former amateur boxer in the United States who has been accepted by an
accredited College or University; currently enrolled as a High School Senior or in college.
2. The students must sign a waiver authorizing the school to release records to be reviewed by the scholarship
committee.
3. The individuals will be evaluated in the following areas:
a. Athletics:
b. Academics:
c. Community Involvement:
d. Financial Need:
Awards, honors, or achievements in the area of athletics.
Awards, honors, or achievements in the area of academics.
Services performed for charitable or other community
organizations.
Necessity for financial assistance will also be examined.
Scholarship Application: http://www.aaib.org/connect / Deadline: June 1, 2016 / Award Amount: $4000-$8000 /
Mail application and any relevant student information to: The American Association for the Improvement of
Boxing, Inc. (AAIB) c/o Scholarship Committee, 86 Fletcher Avenue, Mount Vernon, NY 10552-3319.
All the winners (http://www.aaib.org/scholars/) are invited to the AAIB CELEBRITY GOLF INVITATIONAL
and the Awards Dinner & Sports Auction afterwards. All winners are welcomed and encouraged to
come to the dinner although attendance is not mandatory.

CALENDAR YEAR 2016
Issue # 04.01.2016
Dear USA Boxing Members,
The USA Boxing Board of Directors would like to inform you of an important
change/clarification to the Technical Rule Book regarding participation in
boxing events NOT sanctioned by USA Boxing. Please note that this rule
applies to boxers, coaches and officials!
Technical Rule Book, Rule 1. Membership
1.5 (AMENDED)
Any boxer, coach or official who participates in an unsanctioned amateur or non-amateur
boxing contest or tournament is ineligible to participate in competition as an athlete or
non-athlete member of USA Boxing. Such person may make an appeal for consideration
through USA Boxing’s grievance and complaint process.
1.5.1 Any boxer who has participated in an amateur Tough Man-type competition may join
USA Boxing but shall not be allowed to compete as a novice, he/she will be required to
compete in the open division. Once an athlete has joined USA Boxing, he/she shall not be
allowed to again participate in an amateur Tough Man-type event and then return to USA
Boxing competition.
1.5.2 Any boxer who has participated as a professional in any physical combat sport shall
not be eligible to compete as an athlete in USA Boxing.
This rule is in effect immediately and will appear in the next rulebook update.
USA BOXING CLARIFICATION
The National Office recognizes the recent email update regarding rule changes has caused
some confusion. In an effort to provide clarity to the rule changes, we hope the following
addresses your questions. (Continued)

CALENDAR YEAR 2016
Issue # 04.01.2016
(Continued)
Our rule change is bringing all USA Boxing members under the same standards for
participation in amateur boxing competitions. To be clear, USA Boxing does not restrict USA
Boxing non-athlete members from participating in State Athletic Commission approved
professional boxing events.
The updated rules address non-USA Boxing sanctioned events, such as so called smokers.
The new rules do not prohibit non-athlete participation in Military Base shows or State
Athletic Commission approved Fire and Police events.
An example:
A coach takes an athlete to an unsanctioned amateur boxing event, the athlete competes
and the coach works the corner. If USA Boxing is informed of the fact that the athlete
participated in an unsanctioned event, the athlete is subject to suspension from USA
Boxing. The former rules did not address the coach taking an athlete to the event or the
fact that a USA Boxing registered official could have worked the event without violating
USA Boxing rules. By approving this rule change the Board of Directors wants to ensure all
USA Boxing members are held to the same level of accountability.
UPDATE ON AIBA
Current AIBA rules restrict USA Boxing members who are either boxers or certified AIBA
Referee/Judges and Coaches from participating in non-AIBA Professional Boxing events.
AIBA announced last week that this restriction could be lifted in the upcoming months. This
is very important news as it will impact the future of our sport. It includes allowing current
professional boxers to compete in the Olympics. While this is a controversial issue, the
positive results will be that Officials and Coaches who work with professional boxers at
State Commission sanctioned events will no longer be excluded from participating in AIBA
events where their athletes are competing.
