Year 3 letter - April 2017 - The Edward Betham CE Primary School

Information for Parents/Carers of Children in Year 3: April 2017
Dear Parents/Carers,
We hope you had an enjoyable Easter holiday and are ready for the new term ahead.
Below are a few reminders about Year 3, which we hope you will find helpful.
We would like to see the children grow in independence as they prepare for Year 4. This
means that they are responsible for remembering their P.E. kit, reading books,
equipment for school and home learning and must ensure they bring their equipment to
school on the correct day.
Home Learning
All home learning instructions are glued into pupils’ yellow home learning books and tasks
should be completed in the yellow book unless stated otherwise. Home learning is given
on Thursday and should be completed over the weekend and given in on Tuesday morning
for marking. Children must ensure they remove their home learning from their bags and
hand it in on or before Tuesday. This is the same for their spelling test book; please
make sure your child brings their spelling test book to school every Tuesday. It is also
important that your child’s presentation is of a high standard, children should be writing in
pencil, focusing on joined up handwriting (joining letters correctly) and underlining all
headings and subheadings.
Talk Home Learning
Talk learning is given out on Thursday to be completed that evening. Please spend time
talking about the topic with your child. Talk home learning is crucial for Friday’s ‘Extended
Writing’ session: if the child cannot say it, the child cannot write it.
If anyone is absent on Thursday s/he should ask for a copy of the home learning sheet and
complete it as soon as possible.
School Trips
We are pleased to announce that we will be arranging another two school trips this year,
the first of which is on 21st April to Neasden Temple. Please let your child’s teacher know if
you can help on this occasion. You will be attending the trip with your child’s class; please
remember that, if leading your child’s group, you should ensure that all children in that
group have your attention.
Class Essentials
P.E. kits consist of black plimsolls, red/white shorts, plain white/red T-shirt; black or grey
tracksuits may be worn in winter for outside P.E. Please do not give your child leggings
instead of tracksuit bottoms as these are not warm enough. Children must have P.E.
shorts for our indoor P.E. lesson. Earrings should not be worn for P.E., children need to be
able to remove their own earrings or provide their own masking tape to stick over these
and long hair should be tied back. P.E. takes place on a Monday (3EH), Wednesday (3ED)
and Friday (both classes).
Please make sure all of your child’s belongings (clothing and equipment) are labelled with
their name and class in case something goes missing.
Your child may wish to bring one small pencil case (space is limited) containing an HB
pencil, coloured pencils and a glue stick. Please note: no felt-tipped pens, gel pens or
rubbers are permitted.
Refreshments
Your child may bring in a piece of fruit for morning playtime.
As we enter the summer months, please provide your child with a labelled bottle of water,
which they will have access to in class. Milk can be ordered and children are responsible for
collecting their milk at break time from the Welfare Room.
Reading
Reading books and records need to come back to school every day as reading sessions may
take place on any day. Please listen to your child read every day for at least 10 minutes
and discuss the content of the book, particularly characters’ thoughts, feelings and actions.
Please encourage your child to ask about any unknown words. Sign the Reading Record
book each day to indicate your child has read to you. Reading Records are checked and
signed by class teachers weekly.
Please note that the focus is on comprehension rather than speed-reading, and so 1-2
books will be sent home per week.
Other important information
Every Friday afternoon the class teacher is released from class to plan, prepare and assess.
During this time the class are taught P.E. by Fit For Sport.
Mathletics
Your child’s password will be found in their yellow home learning book, if you have
difficulty logging in please ensure you have the most up-to-date version of JAVA installed.
Remember to log on and use the resources regularly to support your child’s learning.
Miss Dodd and Miss Hughes
3EH will have a learning review assembly on Friday 19th May.
Thank you for all your support so far. We are looking forward to continuing our successful
academic year.
