Subject : Guidelines for switchover from IS 325:1996 to IS/IEC 60034-1:2004.
Rotating Machinery Sectional committee, ET15 had decided the withdrawal of IS 325:1996,
Specification for Three-phase induction motors and its superseding by IS 12615:2011,
Specification for Energy efficient induction motors and IS/IEC 60034-1:2014, Specification
for Rotating electrical machines, Part 1 Rating and Performance in the 19th meeting held on
06-03-2014.
The above decision was informed by ETD vide their note no. IS 325/IS 12615 dated
20-03-2014. Subsequently, ETD had informed vide email dated 11-07-2014 that the varieties
which are not covered in IS 12615:2011 may be covered under IS/IEC 60034-1:2004 such as
duty types and frame sizes etc. IS/IEC 60034-1:2004 specifies ten duty types from S1 to S10
and six classes of ratings.
At present, BIS Certification marking clause is not existing in IS / IEC 60034-1:2004. In this
regard, matter has been taken up with ETD vide email dated 11-07-2014, in response ETD
informed that necessary amendment in the National Foreword is being made to accommodate
certification clause. ETD may be requested for further needful action.
The STI and marking fee for IS/IEC 60034-1:2004 are not yet finalized. An undertaking
shall be obtained from the licensees/applicants that they will accept the STI & marking fee as
and when finalized.
The custodian BO (AHBO) for IS 325:1996 [(IS / IEC 60034-1:2004)] is requested to finalize
the STI & marking fee and get the same approved from DDGW as desired by the Competent
Authority. A copy of the approved STI & tentative marking fee may be forwarded to CMDII by 15 September 2014 for further necessary action.
In view of above, it is proposed to complete the action of switch over from IS 325:1996 to
IS/IEC 60034-1:2004 by 15 October 2014.
Following is proposed for switch over from IS 325:1996 to IS/IEC 60034-1:2004:
For existing licensees :
i)
All licensees of IS 325:1996 be informed by ROs/BOs about the withdrawal of IS
325:1996 and its superseding by IS/IEC 60034-1:2004 for the varieties which are
not covered in IS 12615:2011 may be covered under IS/IEC 60034-1:2004.

Licensees be informed that they can switch over to IS/IEC 60034-1:2004 for
which licensee has to submit a request to BIS along with acceptance to STI and
marking fee for IS/IEC 60034-1:2004.
A surveillance visit has to be arranged for carrying out testing in the factory for
ensuring conformity of the Rotating electrical machines to IS/IEC 60034-1:2004.
During the visit, the manufacturing machinery and testing equipment for the
additional requirements specified in IS/IEC 60034-1:2004 shall be verified and if
found in order then endorsement for change over to IS/IEC 60034-1:2004 may be
issued.
For applicants :

No fresh application for IS 325:1996 be accepted, henceforth all applications shall
be recorded for IS/IEC 60034-1:2004 for the varieties which are not covered
under IS 12615:2011.
All existing applicants be informed to switch over to IS/IEC 60034-1:2004 by
giving fresh declaration for testing and if their Rotating electrical machines found
conforming to IS/IEC 60034-1:2004 and on their submission of acceptance to STI
and marking free for IS/IEC 60034-1:2004.
This is issued with the approval of the Competent Authority.
