FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: August 14, 2014 CONTACT: Laura Bynum APWA Media Relations/Communications Manager (202) 218-6736 [email protected] Coconut Creek’s New Public Works Administration Building Project Named APWA 2014 Public Works Project of the Year KANSAS CITY, MO. – Coconut Creek’s new Public Works Administration Building Project was recently named a 2014 Public Works Project of the Year by the American Public Works Association (APWA). The project is being honored APWA’s Project of the Year award: Small Cities/Rural Communities – Structures category. This award honors agencies representing cities and communities with a population of 75,000 or less. The SC/RC Project of the Year Award was established to promote excellence in demonstrating creativity, ingenuity and efficiency in the delivery of public works projects that have a profound impact on the community. For 2014, the team of winners, including the Coconut Creek Public Works Department as the managing agency; Kaufmann Lynn Construction as the primary contractor; and Walters Zackria, as the primary consultant; will be presented with the award during APWA’s 2014 International Public Works Congress & Exposition Awards Ceremony in Toronto, Ontario, Canada during August 17-20, 2014. The APWA Project of the Year Award in the Small Cities/Rural Communities Structure category was the City of Coconut Creek’s completed construction of a new 24,950-square-foot, $8 million, Public Works Communications and Emergency Operations Center. The building, which was constructed to withstand Category 5 hurricane winds of 180 mph and to achieve LEED Silver certification, houses the City’s Public Works, Information Technology, and Police Records Departments as well as the Broward County North Regional 911 Call Center. The project represents collaboration between the City of Coconut Creek, Broward County, and the Broward Sheriff’s Office, and functions as the City’s Emergency Operations Center in the event of a natural or man-made disaster. The new Public Administration building replaces and sits in the same footprint of the City’s former Public Works building, which was initially constructed in 1986, but was no longer able to provide for an efficient and effective operation in a city that had grown from roughly 20,000 residents in 1986 to over 55,000 residents today. Coconut Creek is approximately 12 square miles in size and located in northern Broward County, Florida. The Coconut Creek Public Administration Building construction project represents Coconut Creek’s sustained commitment to energy efficiency and sustainable development. The building accomplished LEED Silver certification through integrating sustainable design features such as low-flow showers, LED light fixtures, selfpowered electricity generating toilets, and white roofs that reflect the sun’s heat away from the building lowering cooling costs.
