That is the root meaning of the word Lent. I hope and pray that you, my parishioners, take the time to quarantine yourselves in order to let the graces of your Lenten prayer, fasting and almsgiving be fruitful. Quarantine has the understanding of placing ourselves apart from the ordinary comings and goings in life in order to be healed and restored. Please take advantage of the Lenten opportunities offered by your parish to deepen your relationship with Jesus Christ. His life, death and Resurrection is the central mystery of our faith, hope and love of God. Make decisions that will help you have forty days and forty nights to be a stronger, more disciplined Christian witness. It takes fasting and sacrifice to imitate the divine love of Jesus Christ. This year’s Lent for me will be a concern for the wellbeing of Mother Earth. In particular, I was moved by the invitation to reduce food waste. In a newspaper article last Sunday of the Marietta Journal (Feb. 19), I read that 40% of food in the United States goes uneaten according to the Natural Resources Defense Council. This environmental advocacy group says that cutting food waste by just 15% would help feed more than 25 million people a year “at a time when one in six Americans lack a secure supply of food to their tables.” Of course, I welcome anyone to join me for forty days and forty nights to FAST from FOOD WASTE and PRAY for all who are dedicated to feeding the hungry. Perhaps, planting a garden with more vegetables and sharing them with others might be one of the FRUITS of a Lenten journey. Join us brothers and sisters in our community Lenten efforts to be holy as our Lord God is holy. See you on Ash Wednesday (March 1) for the beginning of our “quarantine” called Lent. Fr. Fr. Knowing, Living and Sharing Our Faith Hungry Walk: March 5, 2017 Benefiting the Atlanta Community Food Bank and our own Food Pantry. The Hunger Walk/Run is an annual event benefiting the Atlanta Community Food Bank (ACFB) and St. Vincent de Paul Society (SVdP) Our conference benefits in two ways. 1. When we help ACFB raise money, they are able to purchase food and we are able to purchase food from them at subsidized prices. This is critical to keeping our food pantry stocked. 2. 36% of the collected funds is repatriated to our conference. Atlanta SVdP gets 24% of the funds to help with clients in areas not served by an existing conference. There are two ways you can help: 1. You can join the St. Thomas team and raise funds as a walker or runner. Surf to http://tinyurl.com/ SmyrnaSTATrotters2017 and click the button labeled "Join Team" 2. You can contribute to other St. Thomas Vincentians who will be walking or running. Surf to http:// tinyurl.com/SmyrnaSTATrotters2017 and click the button labeled "Donate Now" GOT ROSARY?
