A Message from the Chairman of the Board
of Trustees and the President/Principal
Board of Trustees 2007-08
T
his report highlights two remarkable years of the Mother McAuley
community. The faith-filled and inspiring mission and ministry of the
Sisters of Mercy are alive and vibrant today, as evidenced in this report.
Mercy education, brought to Chicago in 1846, and established on the
current site of Mother McAuley High School in 1956, continues to
develop young women as confident role models and strong leaders for
the future.

The heritage and traditions of the past are combined with the new
initiatives of the present and future. Many of these wonderful curricula,
programs, projects, and events are featured within these pages. The
academics, fine arts, athletics, spiritual life, and extra-curricular
activities reflect the reputation of excellence, and the lifetime advantage,
for which this school is known.
We hope that you see yourself reflected in these pages. Without
the support of our board, alumnae, parents, faculty, staff, friends, and
neighbors, our students would not have access to the outstanding and
creative programs, provided each day. Our school is grateful to supporters
like you, who have made all these accomplishments possible, so we
continue to ask that you do so for the years ahead.

These difficult economic times have been challenging for all sectors,
including private, Catholic schools. Mother McAuley Liberal Arts High
School continues to survive and thrive for today’s students, but needs
your help to do so for the young women of future decades.

An Alumna’s Commitment to Single Gender Educa tion Benefits a New Generation of McAuley Women
Fran credits her McAuley education and the single-gender environment with her success as a
prominent attorney. She notes, “My feelings about single gender education were really inspired by
McAuley, where I tried things that I know I would not have tried in a co-ed setting. Most of what
I have learned has been learned by trying and failing and by trying again. I believe that educating
women in a single gender setting gives them tools for lasting friendships and leadership skills that
they may not otherwise acquire. I would like to see McAuley continue its mission of single
gender education because it has consistently allowed young women to emerge and find their
strengths and use them wisely. The type of self reflection this requires is often impossible to
exercise in a co-educational setting during high school years. Girls at that age are often so self
conscious that they just can’t stop and appreciate what they have going for themselves.”
In honor of her parents and her McAuley education, Fran is committed to helping a new
generation of McAuley women. In the Spring of 2008 two incoming freshman each received a
$5,000 John V. and Mary Ann Robinson Scholarship. In explaining her generosity, Fran states,
“Wherever I have gone, I have never felt that my McAuley education was anything less than a
superior foundation. I have never forgotten the people I met at McAuley; I have never ceased to
appreciate the values that were instilled there by the teachers, as well as the students. If I can give
back, I am proud to do so.”
“I was fortunate enough to have a father who believed in educating women,”
explains Fran. My father always said, “Educate a man and you have educated
a man. Educate a woman, and you have educated a family.”
The Robinson girls: Fran Robinson ‘74, Jo Hayward ‘71, Nancy Bisanz ‘68, Barb Heneghan ‘77,
and Fran’s niece Tanya Robinson ‘06. The oldest Robinson daughter, Mary Dugan ‘63 passed away
in 1990.
I
n the Spring of 2008, Fran Robinson ’74 pledged $50,000 to create the John V. and Mary Anne
Robinson Scholarship in honor of her parents and their commitment to Catholic, single-gender
education. Fran and her four sisters, Mary Robinson Dugan ’63, Nancy Robinson Bisanz ’68, JoAnn
Robinson Hayward ’71, and Barbara Robinson Heneghan ’77 are all graduates of McAuley.
Fran’s niece, Tanya Robinson, graduated in 2006.

In 1978, Fran Robinson graduated cum laude from Boston College, and in 1982, graduated with high
honors from the Chicago Kent College of Law. She became a member of the Massachusetts Bar in
1982 and was an Assistant Attorney General assigned to the Criminal Bureau from 1982 until
1987. From 1987 to the present time Fran has been a partner in the law firm of Davis, Robinson
& Molloy, LLP. The firm is busy handling cases at every level of the state and federal systems.
In addition to practicing law, Fran has also been a guest lecturer at the Harvard Law School Trial
Advocacy Class; the National Institute of Trial Attorneys Trial Advocacy Class and the
Massachusetts Continuing Legal Education Foundation. In 2002, she was appointed to the
Judicial Nominating Council by then Governor Mitt Romney. She has also been a frequent Legal
Commentator for television stations New England Cable News, Channel Five and Fox TV.
Fran lives in Massachusetts with her husband and two children. She is also an avid horsewoman.

Celebration 2008
McAuley alumna Alex Meneses Simpson is an actress, producer and philanthropist. She has
studied at Second City in Chicago and the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute. A member of the
Screen Actors Guild for 20 years, Alex performs on the stage, television and in film. A devoted
alumna of McAuley, Alex frequently meets with the students to share her insights and her
commitment to a McAuley education. In 2005 Alex established the Alex Meneses Endowed
Scholarship so that a new generation of young women will benefit from a McAuley education.
Celebration 2008 festivities included dinner, entertainment by AC Rock, silent auction and
grand raffle. All proceeds from this event benefited the Mother McAuley Endowment for Student
Scholarships and Financial Aid.

he Board of Trustees of Mother McAuley Liberal Arts High School hosted the annual
Celebration Endowment Fundraiser on Saturday, April 19, 2008, at Drury Lane, Oak Brook. The
event honored Stephen and Winifred Ligda with the Catherine McAuley Leadership Award and
Alex Meneses Simpson ’83 with the Distinguished Alumna Award.
Steve and Winnie (Gardner ’59) Ligda are long-time supporters of Mother McAuley High School.
Steve is a past Chair of the Board of Trustees and has served on several other Board committees.
Winnie was instrumental in planning the Mass during McAuley’s 50th Anniversary Celebration
and participated in several alumnae events with her daughter (Jennifer Ligda Busk’93).

Celebration 2009
This year’s Distinguished Alumna was Barbara Moore Pasquinelli ’57, who was recognized for her
work as a volunteer and philanthropist. In addition to her support of Mother McAuley, Barbara
is president of The Caritas Society of St. Coletta’s of Illinois Foundation and an active member
of the League of Women Voters of the Palos-Orland Area.
The Celebration festivities included dinner, entertainment by Skip Griparis, silent auction
and grand raffle. All proceeds from this event benefited the Mother McAuley Endowment for
Student Scholarships and Financial Aid.
During the evening, McAuley debuted its new “giving tree.” Attendees were invited to sponsor
specific needs of academic departments and school programs, by picking a “leaf ” and providing
a donation for the item selected. The tree provided more than $1,100 in needed items.

he Board of Trustees of Mother McAuley Liberal Arts High School hosted Celebration
2009, on May 15, 2009, the annual gala to raise money for scholarships and financial aid. The
event, held in the school's recently renovated Dining Hall and Lounge, included the presentation
of the Catherine McAuley Leadership Award and the Distinguished Alumnae Award.
The 2009 Catherine McAuley Leadership Award recipients were the Napleton Family who are
generous supporters of McAuley, the Sisters of Mercy and the community. The Napletons have a
long, rich history of Mercy education including Mrs. Elizabeth Napleton, a 1942 graduate of Mercy
High School, and McAuley alumnae Ellen Napleton Roche ‘68, Katherine Roche Napleton ‘68,

Sheffieck appreciate the Mercy
educational tradition and wanted to
contribute to that tradition. In the
Spring of 2008 they decided
to create the Sheffieck Family
Scholarships to help students who
need financial support. They have
pledged $90,000 over the next five
years to provide scholarships to current McAuley
freshmen. The scholarship requires that the
student must demonstrate financial need,
participate in at least one extra-curricular activity,
and must have at least one parent or guardian who
is a member of the Mothers or Fathers Club. Both
Mr. and Mrs. Sheffieck are long-time members of
the Mothers and Fathers Clubs, and they wanted to

support those parents who give their
time and talent to these parent
organizations which are so vital to
Mother McAuley. This scholarship
will ensure that these young women
will benefit from a McAuley
education.
But the Sheffiecks’ generosity
didn’t stop there.
They had
witnessed the benefits of a selfdefense program at another
women’s school which their niece
attended, and they wanted to
create a similar program at Mother McAuley.
With an additional donation and multi-year
pledge, the Sheffiecks have created a new
self-defense program that will become a part of
McAuley physical education requirement and an
after-school program that will be accessible to
all McAuley students. The program began in
the Fall of 2008.
Alumnae and friends gathered on Friday, August 8, at Stony Creek Golf Course in Oak Lawn for Putt & Party
2008. The outing raised more than $10,000 which will provide tuition assistance to McAuley Legacy Students.
The Martin Family was a proud sponsor of the golf outing. Family members include Janice Martin,
Michael Martin, alumnae Maureen Martin Moskal ‘67, Rose Martin Parker ’77, Beth Martin Kwiatkowski ’80,
sophomores Johanna Martin and Melissa Martin, and future Mighty Mac McKenna Martin.

This annual fundraiser, sponsored by the Alumnae Association, is proving to be a must attend event.
The evening not only features lively music, awesome food, great auction items and class reunions, but a
chance for the McAuley community to gather at the school to raise money for Alumnae Board sponsored
scholarships. Dueling pianos from Howl at the Moon provided musical entertainment, Chuck’s Southern
Comforts Café dished up food that left partygoers asking for more, and a variety of creative auction items
kept guests on their toes all night long. The raffle, featuring a trip to Sunset Point in Eagle River,
Wisconsin, remains a favorite especially among alumnae who recall taking trips there in the 50s, 60s and
early 70s. The winner enjoys a four-day weekend stay in the renovated lakeside coach house.
McAuley hosted their annual Party with the Plaid event on February 21, 2009, featuring the Motown
stylings of The Gentlemen of Leisure. The evening also featured a delicious buffet by Chuck’s Southern
Comforts Café in Burbank, a silent auction, raffles and reunion gatherings. All proceeds benefited the
scholarship fund sponsored by the McAuley Alumnae Board.
The Silent Auction and basket raffle featured items donated by local businesses along with “priceless”
items including breakfast with President/Principal Dr. Christine Melone. An added bonus to the silent
auction was six hand painted benches by McAuley alumnae.
One of the prizes in the Grand Raffle was a trip to Sunset Point in Eagle River, Wisconsin donated by
owners Kimbal & Jet Goluska. Sunset Point was a popular McAuley retreat center in the 50s, 60s, and early
70s. Winner Colette O'Boyle McLaughlin ‘83, her daughter and future Mighty Mac Ashling McLaughlin,
and family will enjoy a four day weekend stay in the recently renovated lakeside coachhouse.
Party with the Plaid also welcomed several reunion classes. Members of the Classes of 1969, 1973, 1974,
1984, 1988, and 1989 each had their own “party within the party” while dancing and reminiscing with
former classmates.

2007-08 Class Year Participations
After a long illness, Jan Malloy, joined our Lord and Savior on September
3, 2009. Jan had been a part of the McAuley family for 8 years. She
promoted the McAuley Advantages with such spirit and energy that she
became an honorary Mighty Mac.

One of the pleasures of my work is listening to stories told by alumna about their days at St. Xavier Academy and
Mother McAuley High School. An amazing thing that speaks to the tradition of this institution is the consistency of
those stories whether the alumna graduated last year or years ago. Alumna make lifelong friendships here, gain a sense
of self here, begin to dream big here, and see themselves as being empowered to make a difference in the world here.
All underscore the importance of the lifetime advantage gained here by all the young women blessed to
graduate from Mother McAuley and its predecessor Saint Xavier Academy.

I walked in the door of St. Xavier Academy at 49th and Cottage Grove at age 5 and exited the door of St. Xavier
College at age 21, with years and years of wonderful experiences in between. Our 50th reunion in 2007, held at
McAuley, was an amazing event. Although I have kept in touch with some of my classmates over the years remember there were only 33 of us - we all fell seamlessly into the old camaraderie that we enjoyed at the Academy
and McAuley. I have wonderful memories and a strong educational background thanks to those years. My daughter,
Susan, class of '85, didn't have much of a choice when high school was looming. It was to be McAuley. She was
valedictorian of her class and went on to Notre Dame and Stanford Law School. I will definitely credit her personal
hard work and her single sex education at McAuley for her success (not to mention her mother's influence).”

The accompanying charts illustrate alumnae support through contributions to the schools past two annual fund drives
showing that 6% of our alumnae community donates. The immediate challenge is to increase that percentage to 20%
participation during this fiscal year. It is our hope that giving to McAuley is an easy decision to make for all alumnae.

belief in McAuley and all the young women who stand to benefit from your generosity; and will be able to add their

Memorializing a Beautiful Spirit
In the summer of 2007, Joy Stevens, the aunt of Maggie Guilfoyle,
donated more than $10,000 to create the Maggie Guilfoyle
Cheerleading Scholarship. Joy had collected contributions from friends
and family to memorialize the niece that she held so dear. In March of
2006, Maggie, a McAuley junior, was tragically killed in an automobile
accident.
Joy decided to create an endowed annual scholarship to remember one
of Maggie’s favorite activities, cheerleading. Maggie was a spirited
cheerleader for the St. Rita Mustangs, and in perpetuity this annual
scholarship will be given to a young woman who is a McAuley
student and an active cheerleader. The first scholarship was awarded
in November 2008.
23 Mother McAuley Liberal Arts High School
A few years ago, Mother McAuley instituted the Graduation
Portrait Program for the senior class. The students could have
their photo taken on graduation day, and the proceeds from
the photos would go to financial aid scholarships for the
junior class. This gift marked their first contribution to the
McAuley Annual Fund. Below are the students from the

Mother McAuley Liberal Arts High School is a Catholic educational community committed to

Helen Brach Foundation
Mother McAuley received a $25,000 grant from the Helen Brach Foundation as seed money to
address the security and surveillance needs in and around the school building. McAuley was able
to install cameras and monitors at several main entrances as a direct result of this funding.
The Charlotte R. Schmidlapp Fund and the Agatha O’Brien Ministry Grant
A combined grant from the Charlotte R. Schmidlapp Fund/Fifth Third Bank and the Agatha O’Brien Ministry
Grant/Sisters of Mercy of the Americas provided McAuley with the financial resources to create an expanded
and improved Learning Resource Center. The center provides important technologies which enhance our present
program serving students challenged with learning disabilities or faced with special learning difficulties. This
program expresses McAuley’s commitment to mainstream students while providing personal attention and
customized assistance.
It requires that our students play an active role in developing their individualized learning plan. In past years the
Learning Resource Program served approximately 100 students. As a result of the financial resources provided through
the two grants the Learning Resource Program is now able to reach more than 300 students. In addition, the grants
also funded professional development for our faculty so that they are better trained to identify students with
learning challenges and provide suitable strategies to meet their needs.
Another component of the Agatha O’Brien Ministry Grant is the financial assistance McAuley received to provide
two additional services to our students. The first of these is to provide counseling for students whose families lack
health insurance and are not able to afford needed services. Over the past two years approximately 50 students have
been provided with counseling who otherwise would not have been able to receive services.
The second of these services enables us to provide needed assistance for our students and teachers in addressing the
gap between expected and achieved mastery in the content area of Science Reasoning Skills as measured by the
ACT. This assistance includes direct service and support materials for our faculty to assist them with processes and
strategies that reinforce the link between content and specific test-taking strategies. It also allows us to provide
Content and Strategies Workshops as a free service to our students. This is a value of nearly $500 per student.
BP A+ for Energy Program
Through the BP A+ for Energy Program three of our
faculty members (Dr. Roz Iasillo, Mr. Bob Thomas, and
Mrs. Kathleen Gordon Davis) were awarded generous
grants totaling $25,000 to introduce new exciting
alternative energy education programs. BP’s A+ for
Energy Program was created to recognize innovative
energy education activities in the classroom. Each
awardee received a grant to implement their program,
a full scholarship to attend a three-day Energy
Educator Training Conference, and a Science of Energy kit and other classroom materials valued at $500.
•Dr. Iasillo’s project centered on conducting an energy audit. “Energize McAuley – An Alternative Energy
Audit” was an opportunity for students to learn how the school uses energy and then research alternative
energy sources. The Audit provides real-life learning through the use of career-related teams that carry out
tasks similar to professionals in the energy industry.
•Mr. Thomas designed a research project for his Physics Honors students centered on converting solar and
wind energy to electricity. Approximately 100 students will work in teams to build and collect data from
wind and solar energy kits, convert the energy into electricity and conduct experiments using different
variables to determine how to obtain the most power from the energy sources.
•Mrs. Gordon Davis prepared an interdisciplinary project involving the Advanced Placement Art classes and
the Environmental Science students. Together the classes will concentrate their study on five sources of
renewable energy: solar, wind, geothermal, tides, and hydroelectric. They will create visual art pieces directly
related to the study of energy and alternative sources.
As an extension of the BP energy grants, Mother McAuley was successful in obtaining a grant from the
Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation to install a set of solar panels as a source of electricity. The focus
of this project is to continue to educate students regarding alternative energy sources for a sustainable way of
life. The Foundation intends that the Small-Scale Solar Photovoltaic (PV) program be a thorough
introduction to solar energy, while challenging students to develop ways to constructively and economically
use the energy. The installation of this solar system is valuable to each of the projects funded by the BP
A+ for Energy Program.

The Illinois Department of Transportation and the Ford Foundation awarded Mother McAuley the
$2,000 Teen Safe Driving Grant. The grant money enabled students and faculty members to work
together to develop a program to educate teens about the hazards of distracted driving. McAuley chose
to focus specifically on the hazards of cell phone use while operating a vehicle. Some of the activities
included researching statistics on cell phone usage while driving; effective ways to demonstrate safe use
of cell phones; and presentations by students and guest speakers. This grant was first awarded in the
2007-08 school year and renewed for 2008-09.
