SPRING FLOWER SHOW 2017 Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh The Fletcher Building (Beside the Glasshouses) 8th and 9th April 2017 12 noon to 5pm Admission – £3 RCHS Members Students & Children Free Free (The Children’s Spring Show and Schools competition will be held separately on 25th & 26 March in the John Hope Gateway) www.rchs.co.uk [email protected] Scottish Charity No: SC 006522 1 Some basic questions asked and answered. 1. Can I cut daffodil blooms from my garden to enter in the show rather than growing them in pots? Answer: Yes but look at the pointers on page 11 to find out what the judges look for. 2. Is there a reason why I should consider growing some in pots? Answer: Growing bulbs in pots helps to ensure that plants are ready when you want them as it is easier to control the conditions as flowers in the open are at the mercy of the weather. It may also help to ensure your blooms are unblemished. 3. Do I have to plunge the pots in a special bed? And if so why? Botanical illustration by Pamela Warrington Answer: Most Daffodils and spring bulbs are hardy but bulbs benefit from having some slight protection when in a pot to avoid damage to the roots. This does not need to be a plunge bed but can be placed in a dark or covered area and kept free from hard frosts but cool.
