Introducing Our New Arrivals to Hugo & Oneka
Hello Hugo and Oneka Families,
My name is Colleen Kopp and I am very excited to join the 4 th grade team at Oneka next year! After growing up in the Chisago Lakes area, I attended Bethel University for my Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education with a Middle School Specialty in Math. After graduating, I taught Title One math as well as advanced 5th grade math at Lakeaires, Matoska, and Willow Elementary in White Bear Lake. I began teaching at Oneka Elementary in 2012 as an intervention specialist for math and reading. I have loved getting
to know the students and families at Oneka these past two years. I am looking forward to seeing familiar
faces and meeting new ones in the fall!
I currently live in Lauderale. I love spending time outside with friends and family, camping or being out on
the lake. I enjoy reading and learning new things. Playing the piano is another one of my hobbies, and I
accompany at church and for weddings now and then. I am also a volunteer Young Life leader in the
White Bear Lake/Mahtomedi Area for high school students.
See you in September!
Colleen Kopp
Hello Hugo and Oneka Families,
My name is Beth Quaas and I am excited to be joining the 2nd grade team at Oneka Elementary this fall!
I have been a teacher in the WBL School District for thirteen years and have taught in grades K – 3. My
most recent assignment was teaching and supporting the Gifted and Talented program. I attended St.
Cloud State University to receive my undergraduate degree and attained my Gifted and Talented Certificate through St. Mary’s University.
My husband and I currently live in the White Bear Lake/Hugo area. We have two children: Hannah, a recent college graduate, and Garrett, who will be a junior in college this fall. In the summer I enjoy gardening, going on walks, reading, and spending time with family and friends.
I look forward to seeing you this fall!
Beth Quaas
Hugo and Oneka Families,
Hello! My name is Leah Armstrong and I am ecstatic to join the Kindergarten team at Hugo Elementary
next year! I grew up right next door in Mahtomedi and received my Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from St. Catherine University. I have spent the past several years working at Oneka Elementary in
both the front office and as a substitute teacher. I am beyond excited to meet all of the students and their
families in the 14.15 school year.
I currently live in Pine Springs with my daughter and we are looking forward to many things this summer.
We enjoy spending time outdoors camping, exploring parks, and just relaxing in the sun with friends and
family. I hope each and every one of you enjoys the summer. I can’t wait to see you in the fall!
Leah Armstrong

New Arrivals continued
Hello,
My name is Sean Johnson. I look forward to joining the Hugo Kindergarten team for the 2014-2015 school
term. I grew up in Bismarck, North Dakota and lived there until I enrolled at the University of Minnesota.
While at the University of Minnesota, I received both my Bachelor Degree in Youth Studies and my Masters Degree in Youth Development and Leadership. I also have a Masters Degree from the University of
Missouri St. Louis in Early Childhood Education. For the past three years, I have taught Pre-Kindergarten,
Kindergarten, and First Grade in Kansas City, Missouri. Some of my interests are restoring antique tractors,
working on the family farm, any type of sport, and walking my dog, Ramsey. I am a Gophers, Twins, and
Vikings fan and have family in Minnesota and North Dakota. I am excited to be moving back to my Midwest home to attend family and sporting events as well as teaching a new class of kindergartners.

Student Safety is #1
Please be advised that effective at the start of the 2014 -15 school year, there will be a district
wide revision in the procedures used to communicate a change for the end of the school day busing or parent pick up. From now on all requests for a change in a student’s normal dismissal process MUST BE COMMUNICATED IN WRITING, preferably at least 24 hours in advance.
The office personnel, as well as the classroom teachers, will require a written note or an email of
the change request. Therefore, for example, if you call the office to notify the staff you will be
picking up your child or sending them to Extended Day, you will be directed to follow up the phone
call with an email so we have documentation of who made the request. If there is no follow up in
writing we will put the student on the bus as normal.
This procedure should decrease the chances of a student ending up in the wrong place at the end
of the day and ensure our students are delivered safely to the correct location. Thank you in advance for taking this change in procedure seriously.
Notes from Oneka Food Service
If you have a child transferring from Oneka to another White Bear Lake school for the 2014-2015 school
year, any remaining funds in their breakfast/lunch account will transfer with them, and their PIN will remain the same. If your child is transferring out of the school district, any remaining funds can be requested
in the form of a refund from Debra Kelley in our School Nutrition Office located in the district center. She
can be reached at 407.7523 or email at [email protected].
We want to thank all those who help support the school lunch program. We hope you have a great summer!

Summer Reading Programs
There are many free summer reading programs for your children to participate in during the
summer. One of the best ways to maintain student learning over this long break is to have
students continue to read. You will find programs at the public library and book stores as
well as online programs.
Here are a few:
Bookawocky at the public library: pick up forms at the public library of your choice and return completed forms to the library for student prizes. Information at Ramsey County Public
libraries here: http://www.rclreads.org/kids/summer-reading-program and for Washington
County libraries here: http://www.co.washington.mn.us/CivicAlerts.aspx?AID=619
Barnes and Noble bookstores: pick up the reading form in the media center at Oneka or go
to this website for information and to print out a form at home:
http://www.barnesandnoble.com/u/summer-reading/379003570/
Half price bookstores: pick up the form in Oneka’s media center or print out from this
online address: http://hpb.com/fyb/pdfs/FYBReadingLog.pdf
Many of us read online now, here are some summer reading programs for reading with a computer or notebook.
We Give Books: is a free online website that allows you to read books. Create a free account
with an email address and password to read complete books online. A summer reading program includes activities along with reading. Information about the program is found at the
website: http://www.wegivebooks.org/
Tumblebooks: Our school district has a license for students to read online at tumblebooks:
http://www.tumblebooks.com. You will be asked for a username: whitebear and password:
books. These ebooks can be enjoyed by the youngest readers. Quizes and games are available
for many of the stories too.
Not only can summer reading be fun, students can enjoy prizes too.
Mrs. Stirling

Since 2010 our partnership with the Hangzhou Foreign Languages School has grown and has geneach other.
months. Host families are expected to:
• Be open to learn about a new culture/foreign language.
• Be available and willing to help the teacher as needed.
• Keep his/her living space neat and clean and do his/her own laundry.
• Assist with shopping or chores as needed in that and
language to any family members.
Please remember that each teacher is carefully screened by Hangzhou Foreign Languages Schools
and White Bear Lake Area School District staff before coming to our schools to ensure the safety
and well-being of our students. Likewise, we will need to complete background checks on adult
members of households that host teachers to ensure the safety of the teachers while guests in
White Bear Lake Area School District. There is not a cost to the family for the background checks.
