CHESTER NIMITZ By: Luz Tapia Early years/personal life Was born in Texas on February 24th, 1885. Was the son of Chester B. and Anna Nimitz. Nimitz's father died when he was a newborn, his grandfather became his role model who was a German seaman. Nimitz married Catherine Vance Freeman in 1913, and had three daughters and only one son. He died on February 20, 1966, of complications following a stroke Education At first he wanted an appointment at west point but then there weren’t any more spots left. Applied for the United States Naval Academy. He graduated January 30, 1905, seventh in his class of 114 at Annapolis. Early career Before serving as assistant chief of the Bureau of Navigation, the agency that handled personnel matters, including promotion, assignment, recruiting, and training. Nimitz joined the battleship Ohio at San Francisco, and cruised on her to the Far East. Remaining on Asiatic Station in 1907, he successively served on the gunboat Panay, destroyer Decatur, and cruiser Denver. WW1 Summer of 1913 he studied engines. He became an expert in the new discipline of submarine warfare, lecturing on sub tactics at the Naval War College in 1912. Returning to duty, he was made the ship's executive officer and engineer upon its commissioning in October 1916. WW2 Nimitz's main responsibilities were to protect the supply lines between the United States and the Hawaiian Islands as well as the South Pacific route between the United States and Australia. Ten days after the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, he was promoted by Roosevelt. As the war unfolded, Nimitz became commander-in-chief of Pacific Ocean Areas, while keeping his Pacific Fleet command. Nimitz immediately began efforts to rebuild the Pacific Fleet and halt the Japanese advance across the Pacific after pearl harbor. His massive and effective use of the submarine force was highly effective campaign against Japanese shipping. After the war After the wars were over Nimitz departed the Pacific to accept the position of Chief of Naval Operations that he kept for two more years.
