Annexx III Termss of Referencce Office e of Commun nications DP Transslations of intternal and external docum ments for UND Backgground: UNDP P is the UN's gglobal networrk to help peo ople meet theeir development needs an nd build a bettter life arround the world. It is a mu ulticultural and multilinguaal organization and has thrree working languages: English, French and Spanish. Und der the supervvision of the TTranslation M Manager, Office of Comm munications, U UNDP, the co ontractor will be responsibble for translaating documents from the Office e of Communications (OC) or from othe er UNDP Unitss/Bureaux intto the requireed languages. The Translation Managger manages ttranslations ffor the OC, thhe Executive O Office and oth her UNDP uniits, as ed. The Transslation Managger also recom mmends tran slators to oth her UNDP Units/Bureaux, aas neede neede ed. UNDP P expects a traanslated docu ument to be tthoroughly p roofread and d spell checkeed for errors aand typos before it is submitted to tthe requestin ng unit, a stanndard practicee for nearly 3 30 years. Taskss: The co ontractor will undertake the following specific taskss related to trranslation and d proofreadin ng: n and proofre eading of UND DP internal doocuments succh as: messagges from the 1)) Translation Administraator, Associatte Administraator and othe r members of UNDP’s senior managem ment team (consisting of UN Under Secrettaries‐ and Asssistant Secreetaries Generral), texts for tthe UNDP Bullletin (internal electronic ne ewsletter) annd Intranet; U UNDP rules, reegulations and guidelines,, any other in nternal texts aas required. TThe translated d text has to be delivered in MS Word or Exxcel files, as rrequired, follo owing the forrmatting of th he original do ocument as needed. 2)) Translation n and proofre eading of UND DP external ddocuments su uch as: materials for the m media, including p press releasess, media advisories, publiccations, reporrts, and otherr editorial‐related texts. Thesse texts could d be for print publications,, or broadcastt or the web. The translateed text has to o be delivered d in MS Word or Excel filess as required.. 3)) All text, inccluding text ccontained in ffigures, boxess, tables, pho oto captions, ssources and ccovers requires trranslations an nd proofreadiing. Proofrea ding and editting will be do one primarily using Adobe Acrrobat 8. Prooffreading and editing of MSS Word docum ments will maake use of traack changes. 1 4)) The translaator is expectted to perform m terminologgy research (i.e. on UN/UN NDP/UNTerm websites aand others) to o ensure the aaccuracy and appropriaten ness of all translations. The translator is also respon nsible for enssuring qualityy and accuracyy of the entire document before sub bmitting it back to UNDP through the T ranslation Maanager. 5)) Translation n of bibliographical entriess: • The entry (UN publicaation, scientiffic article, new wspaper articcle, special intterest paper, etc.) should onlly be translate ed if further rresearch deteermines that there is an eq quivalent in the target langguage. • Referencce information within the bibliographiccal entry (e.g. publishing en ntity, location n, date, retrie eving instructtions) should be translatedd and/or locaalized. • Country specific instittutions (e.g. LL’Académie Frrançaise, Loyaa Jirga, Keida anren, etc.) an nd acronyms of world‐reno owned institu utions (NASA,, FBI, CIA, etcc.) should be left as is and explained in brackets. Qualifications: dustry track re ecord of at le east 7 years. 1)) Proven ind 2)) Outstandin ng roster of translators and editors in t he following languages: En nglish, French h, Spanish, A Arabic, Chinese, Russian an nd/or any oth er language. 3)) Ability to w work under pressure and m meet strict deeadlines. 4)) Ability to p produce a higgh volume of q quality conteent. 5)) Experience e with the UN N system in ge eneral and UN NDP in particular desired.
