The Territory Wildlife Park is a 3-4 hour in context nature and culture based learning
experience.
Monsoon Magic – Inspiring action for positive change
This Year 8 Geography learning sequence focuses on the diversity of life in and
around a remnant Tropical Monsoon vine-forest and its material, cultural and spiritual
significance to Kungarakan and Warray people. Students will develop and deliver a
visual presentation inspired by the monsoon forest that communicates emotion and
inspires change.
Pre-excursion learning opportunities
Undertake a case study of Northern
Australia’s Tropical Monsoon Forests, their
distinctive landform features, the geomorphic
processes that produced it and the human
causes and effects of degradation on this
landscape
Explore the multilayered meanings (material,
cultural and spiritual wellbeing) associated
with landscapes and landforms by Aboriginal
and Torres Strait Islander Peoples
The different types of landscapes and their
distinctive landform features (ACHGK048)
The geomorphic processes that produce
landforms, including a case study of at least
one landform (ACHGK050)
The human causes and effects of landscape
degradation (ACHGK051)
The aesthetic, cultural and spiritual value of
landscapes and landforms for people,
including Aboriginal and Torres Strait

Identify different views about the value of

One week prior to your excursion:
Familiarise the students with the student companion
Confirm accommodation and additional activities
Ensure students have: their excursion companions, a camera, insect
repellent, pencils, eraser, sharpener and clipboards
Prepare a minimum 1:10 ratio of supervising adults and a first aid kit
Remind students to bring bathers and a towel
During the excursion students will:

Walk (in small groups with an adult
supervisor) along a 1km track and examine
the diversity of life in and around a Tropical
Monsoon vine-forest

When you arrive:
Ensure students have: their excursion companions, a camera, insect
repellent, pencils, eraser, sharpener and clipboards
Collect a map for each supervising adult
Plan your visit around the daily presentations
Distribute groups across the Park to avoid congestion
Allow 1-1.5 hours for students to complete their companions
Remind supervisors that there is safety information on the map and to stay
with their group at all times
Arrange a meeting place (eg. cafe) at a certain time
Encourage responsible, respectful and safe student behaviour
Plan to relax at the end of the day at Berry Springs Nature Park
