Today is the Solemnity of Corpus Christi which dates back to the 13th century, but it actually celebrates something much older. It celebrates the institution of the mystery of the real presence of Jesus Christ in the holy Eucharist, given to his followers on that first Holy Thursday; the same day he gave us the gift of priesthood. Throughout scripture and in the two thousand year tradition of the Church, God has revealed himself to us in so many ways. But, his primary revelation to us, the way in which he showed us himself is as Father. It’s true. God is a trinity of persons in the one true God. He is the Father who created us, the Son, Jesus who redeems us, and the Holy Spirit who sanctifies us. And yet, his primary revelation to us, given to us through the Old Testament and by Jesus himself, is as Father. Of all that we can say about God, of all that we don’t know about him, we know that he is for us our Father. The Fatherhood of God is a wonderful mystery, an awesome gift, and a comforting reality that shows us the great love he has for each and every one of us. Hopefully, we have caught a glimpse of the “fatherhood” of God in the love we know from our own fathers. As we celebrate Father’s Day today, let’s remember to honor those men in our lives who have been “Father” to us, our own fathers, the Holy Father - Pope Francis, our priests who we call “Father,” and all those men who have cared for us and nurtured us in anyway. Let’s offer to the Lord a prayer of thanksgiving for his continual care for us. Happy Father’s Day to all the dads at our parish, and to those visiting us this weekend. Remember to make the day special for your dad, whether alive or dead and offer to our heavenly Father a prayer for him. Happy Father’s Day! God’s Blessings to all! Totus Tuus ~ Catholic Summer Camp is Happening Again! Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish and Immaculate Conception Parish in Braidwood is pleased to announce that we will again hold Totus Tuus [Latin for Totally Yours] a summer camp for children and teens. The program will run at Assumption Parish Berst Hall from July 15 thru 21st. Last year’s program was a success, with over 60 children and teen participants! Totus Tuus is a program sponsored by the Diocese of Joliet. Seminarians and College students travel throughout the Diocese this summer spreading the Good News of our Lord. A variety of activities include ways that lead us into a greater relationship with God, daily prayers and Mass, as well as arts and crafts, games, sports, and much more. This year’s theme is Salvation. The grade school program, for children entering grades 1-6, runs Monday – Friday from 9 AM – 2:30 PM and the cost is $25 per child, the 7th grade thru 12th grade program runs Sunday thru Thursday 7:00 PM to 9 PM and the cost is $10 per teen. T-Shirts are $10 (optional). 11:15 AM Daily Mass Monday – Thru Friday and a Parish Potluck Dinner on Wednesday July 19th at 5:15 PM in Berst Hall. June 18, 2017 www.stmaryassumptionparish.org Page 4 A New Parish Directory in the works ~ Volunteers are needed to form a committee As I mentioned back in May, in July we will begin a very important project to build-up our “parish family” of Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish. The Parish Council is offering us the opportunity to come together as “family” and produce another Parish Pictorial Directory. It’s been a number of years since a parish directory was compiled, and it’s time to renew our efforts to get to know each other a little better. I am inviting and encouraging ALL parishioners to be part of this important undertaking. I’m grateful for those who have already volunteered to help coordinate this effort. Please consider helping in their efforts by volunteering for any number of tasks associated with such a large project. You know the old saying... many hands make light work! Perhaps you can volunteer to sit in the back of church and help with photo session registrations; perhaps you can help by coming to the photo sessions and registering those scheduled. There are other jobs to be done. I would encourage you to consider giving some of your valuable time, call Trisha at the parish office, and do what you can to make our Parish Pictorial Directory a big success. So often around the parish we see people we “know,” BUT we don’t know their names, or their family. The Pictorial Directory will help us get to know each other a little better. This is so important in such a large parish. We have to make special efforts to reach out to others so that we can really say we are a “Parish Family.” I hope everyone will take part in this project. Sign-up for Picture sessions begins today! Especially if your children are home from school for the summer, the July times slots are perfect for you to sign-up for a family portrait. Wouldn’t such a portrait, easily obtained through your cooperation with this project, make a great gift/ remembrance for family and friends. PLEASE consider having your portrait taken and be part of this very special and important piece of building a solid family life for our parish. To have your picture taken, to be included in the Directory, and to receive a copy of the Directory will cost you nothing. Only those who have their pictures taken will receive a copy. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to meet your fellow parishioners and lay-leaders in our wonderful parish. So, brush up your smile, and sign-up for a portrait TODAY! Family pets can be included in your photograph! All picture sessions will be in the Madonna Room. Father Noesen & Parish Council Dates for Photography! Alton Pelowski / Columbia Magazine – May, 2017 For anyone who consumes news media on a regular basis, it is all too easy to become discouraged, if not fearful, about the state of the world. Conflicts and scandals dominate headlines as communicators take advantage of what psychologists call "negativity bias" — that is, people's tendency to respond more to negative things than positive ones. In his message for the 51st World Communications Day, observed May 28th, Pope Francis wrote, "I am convinced that we have to break the vicious circle of anxiety and stem the spiral of fear resulting from a constant focus on 'bad news' (war, terrorism, scandals and all sorts of human Failure). The tragedy of human suffering should not be ignored, but neither should it be reduced to entertainment nor feed a pessimistic outlook. The good news — Jesus himself —is not good because it has nothing to do with suffering, but rather because suffering itself becomes part of a bigger picture. Guided by the Holy Spirit, we are called to see the world and communicate through the lens of hope,” which the pope called "the humblest of virtues, for it remains hidden in the recesses of life; yet it is like the yeast that leavens all the dough." St. Paul wrote his Letter to the Philippians from prison while facing probable death, yet in it he continuously rejoices with gratitude in the promises of Christ. Filled with "the peace of God that surpasses all understanding," Paul urges his readers to "rejoice in the Lord always," to "have no anxiety at all," and to focus their minds on "whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure" (cf. Phil 4:4-9). We may take one small step toward this eternal perspective by recognizing how people of faith have responded in the past to sin and suffering, which are not unique to our times. Just 100 years ago, a growing number of nations found themselves embroiled in a global war that resulted in the deaths of millions. This conflict inspired countless examples of heroism and charity. It was also during the Great War that the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to three shepherd children in Fatima, Portugal, in May 1917. Our Lady came with a warning of punishment if people did not cease offending God, but her message was ultimately one of hope. Within a few short years of the apparitions, two of the children, Francisco and Jacinta Marto, died of illness. But because of the faith, joy and holiness they exhibited in life, they are saints. Their witness reminds us of our heavenly citizenship, even as we are tempted to remain nearsighted and become disheartened in the face of difficulties. And through the gifts of faith, hope and charity, the Holy Spirit leads us to embrace the Good News of salvation in Christ. www.stmaryassumptionparish.org June 18, 2017 Why not give E-Giving a try? • We know that summer is a busy time with out of town trips planned and scheduled activities, so we just wanted to remind you of the advantages of E-giving.
