and impressive gates: In Val di Noto one baroque masterpiece follows the next. An earthquake shook the region in
1693, and the architects charged with rebuilding used the
opportunity to adorn the area with baroque beauty. A total
of eight towns were rebuilt, and in 2002 they were collectively added to the UNESCO World Heritage Site list.

Odysseus defied devastating storms, took on the Cyclops Polyphemus and encountered cannibals and sirens.
He sailed the seas for ten years before finally finding his

Ancient Mycenae
Mycenae is a town steeped in history and legend. When
Heinrich Schliemann began excavating an acropolis site
here in 1876, he discovered 13 kilos of golden treasure,
including Agamemnon’s alleged death mask. The
monumental Lion Gate, the Cyclopean masonry and the
Treasury of Atreus are what make Mycenae one of the
most important archaeological sites in modern-day
Greece.
