The Greens’ vision for 100% renewable electricity by 2030
Theworldisrapidlyembracingcleanenergy.Anenergysector
drivenbyrenewabletechnologiesandinnovationisthepathto
newjobsandprosperity.Weneedleadershipfromour
governmenttosecureafairtransitionforworkersand
communities,andtoharnessthejobsofthefuture.
WesternAustraliaisblessedwithsomeoftheworld’sbest
renewableenergyresourcesandavailablelandonwhichto
buildtheinfrastructure,yetwehaveoneofthelowestmixesof
renewableenergyinthedevelopedworld.Just9%ofWA’s

powercomesfromrenewablesources, muchlowerthanthe
globalaverage,whichisnow19%.
Meanwhile,WA’stotalannualgreenhousegasemissionshave
increasedby8%since2010to86milliontonnesofCO2eper
year.Thisincludesincludes49.3MtCO2efromthestationary
ii
energysector(upby2%since2010 ).Thecommencementof

thePlutoandGorgonLNGhubsaddafurther10MtCO2e .
IncontraventiontotheParisAgreementwhichsetsoutaglobal
actionplanlimitglobalwarmingtowellbelow2C,weare
headingtowardsaclimatecatastrophe.Ourplanetiswarming,
sealevelsarerising,andwearelivingthroughhottersummers,
reducedrainfallinwinterandspringandmoreextremeweather
events.Notonlydoesclimatechangehavedevastatingimpacts
onthenaturalandbuiltenvironments,butimpactsourhealth
andoureconomy.
Thereamoralimperativeanditmakeseconomicsensetoact
now.Thecoalindustryisinstructuraldeclineandtheworldis
shiftingtowardscleanenergy.

renewableenergyistechnicallyachievable,includingonebythe

Therearenowmanycountriesandcitieswith100%renewable
energyplans,aswellascredibleandcostedroadmapsshowing
notonlyisitpossible,butcheaper,safer,andwillcreatemore
jobsthanthefossil-dependentbusinessasusual.

Overthelongertermhowevertheaveragehouseholdpowerbill
wouldbesignificantlylessgiventherewillbenofuelcosts.
Recentstudieshaveshownthatbillionscouldactuallybesaved
fromthetransitiontorenewablesoverthelongterm.
Oneofthebiggestmythsisthatrenewableenergydrivesup
pricesforeveryoneelse,whentheoppositeistrue.Recent
analysisoftheRenewableEnergyTarget(RET)showedpower
priceswillbecheaperwiththeRET,andinthelongrunitwill
saveeveryAustralianhouseholdupto$140ontheirelectricity

billeachyear .
AnationalstudycalledtheHomegrownPowerPlanalsofound
thecostoftransitioningAustralia’senergysystemto100%
renewablesby2050wouldpayforitselfinlowerpricesby2025,
andsave$90billionby2050,andfuelcostsavingswouldcover

110%ofthecapitalinvestmentneeded .

Energy2030includesatimetableforastaged,stableclosureof
fossil-fueledpowerstations.
Approximately500MWayearinnewrenewablecapacityis
addedtothegridaswepowerdownourmostpollutingand
inefficientfossilpowergenerators,basedonnewemissions
intensityandairpollutionstandardstheGreenswillintroduce.

duringpotentialshortfallperiodsoflowsolarandwindsupply.

Collieisanidealfuturerenewablehubbecauseithashigh
qualityrenewableenergyresourcesincludingsolar,biomassand
wind;it’sideallylocatedtosupplyrenewableenergytothe
South-WestInterconnectedSystem(SWIS),therearealready
billionsofdollarsinvestedinpowergenerationandtransmission
infrastructure,andithasalocalworkforceskilledinelectricity
generationandmaintenance,withtransferableskillsrelevantto
largescale/utilitysizerenewableenergygeneration.

Thetransitionfromourexistingprimarilyfossil-fuelled
electricitygenerationsystemto100%renewablesourceswill
ensureareliableandeconomicallyaffordablesupplyasallthe
existingcoalplantsareretiredandthegasplantsarereduced
andmodifiedtorunonbiomassfuelsupply.OurPlanincludesa
20%oversupplyofrenewalblepoweratanyonetime.The
renewablemixwillconsistofwind,solarPV,solarthermaland
biomass.

shifts,andfossilfuelindustriesfaceuncertaintyasthe

facetheprospectofunemploymentwithnotransitionplanin
place.
WehavearesponsibilitytoensureWAworkersarelookedafter
andthisiswhytheGreensarestronglyadvocatingforajustand
stabletransition.Wearecommittedtoensuringnoworkersare
leftbehindaswetransitionfromfossilfuels,andthat
communitiesaresupportedduringtheinevitableclosureofcoal
minesandpowerstations.
