I would also like to dedicate this series to Suzie Whitener, Joyce McCollum, Vivian McClain, Chequeita Lewis, Sheila Reed, and the second grade students at Wahneta Elementary School in Polk County, Florida who gave me the support and pacing information that I needed to make this work for our favorite people in the world – STUDENTS! They will work with: Equivalent fractions: halves, fourths & eighths Place Value: value & position Fact family for 11 & 12: heptagon Adding two columns of numbers Time: duration of time Money: difference Algebraic thinking: reversing operations Calendar: weeks Supplies: Geometry: prisms Grid: 2-quadrant grid Linear measurement: estimating one foot Counting in patterns Temperature: increments of measure Measures of central tendencies: median & range Estimation Weight: ounces & half of a pound Pie-shaped fraction pieces for A (templates after Answer Sheet) Adding two-digit numbers information sheet for D (template after Answer Sheet in Week 12) Large schedule for practice with E Miniature clock for E Real or imitation dimes, nickels, and pennies for F Cup for G Tokens to put under cup for G Prism information for I (template after Answer Sheet) Grid information for J (template after Answer Sheet in Week 11) Grid markers for practice with J (template after Answer Sheet) Customary rulers for K Thermometer for M Range information for N (template after Answer Sheet in Week 11) Unifix cubes/small blocks for O Balance/scale for weighing objects for P Ounce- and pound-weights for weighing objects for P Just Turn & Share: Grade Two Math Centers (Weeks 11 - 20) www.WriteMath.com 1 : Week 14 Directions: A. Duplicate a set of halves in one color card stock and a master circle in white card stock for each student. Duplicate a set of fourths in one color card stock and a master circle in white card stock for each student. Duplicate a set of eighths in one color card stock and a master circle for each student. Students practice placing eighths pieces on the fourth’s and halves master circle to discover the equivalent fractions. B. C. D. E. F. G. Compare the fourths pieces to the eighths pieces. Ask student how many eighths or fourths pieces will cover half of the circle. Same as previous week’s activities. Review the terms: rectangle & heptagon. Students repeat the activities from the previous weeks with fact families. Same as previous week’s activities Review the new schedule with students. These lessons are similar to the previous week’s activities. Same as previous week’s activities. Review switching numbers to the opposite side of the equation and changing the operation. Just Turn & Share: Grade Two Math Centers (Weeks 11 - 20) www.WriteMath.com 2 : Week 14 H. Discuss the number of days in a week. Referring to a calendar, ask students to point out two dates on the calendar that are a week or two weeks apart. I. Review the prism information sheet (template after Answer Sheet) and show students. Allow students to manipulate a variety of prisms. J. – K. Same as previous week’s activities. L. The concept is the same as the previous week’s activities except that the numbers are on vehicles. M. Display a thermometer (template after Answer Sheet). Point out the ten-degree increments displayed as numbers and the small lines that indicate 2-degree increments of measure. Discuss Fahrenheit vs. Celsius. Thermometer 10° increments 50 40 30 2° increments -10 -20 N. – O. Same as previous week’s activities. P. Discuss the number of ounces in a pound (16 oz.) and in half of a pound (8 oz.) Students will decide if the object on the scale weighs more than, less than, or is equal to half of a pound.
