A very important report on bottled water, by The National Resources Defense
Council (“NRDC”) in March of 1999, reveals that sales of bottled water in this
country have recently exploded because of an apparently unfounded public
perception of “purity” driven by very creative advertisements and packaging labels
featuring pristine glaciers, green forests and crystal-clear mountain springs.
The Reality — Tap Water Often Cleaner!
But bottled water sold in the United States is not necessarily any cleaner or safer
than most tap water, according to a four-year scientific study recently made public
by NRDC in which they tested more than 1,000 bottles of 103 brands of bottled
water. While most of the tested waters were found to be of high quality, some
brands were contaminated, with one third of them containing an unhealthy mix
of synthetic organic chemicals, bacteria, and arsenic!
Bottled Tap Water and Other Mysterious Sources . . .
A key NRDC finding is that bottled water regulations are inadequate to assure
consumers of either purity or safety. Their report reveals that 25% to 40% of
bottled water is actually bottled tap water! Moreover, FDA rules actually allow
bottlers to call their product “spring water” even though it may actually be brought
to the surface using a pumped well out in the far corner of a parched parking lot
behind some remote, dusty warehouse and then treated with chemicals. Obviously,
the actual source of some bottled water is not always made clear – some bottled
water marketing is misleading, cleverly implying that the water comes from
pristine sources when it really does not.
