IMPulse NC LLC
The Power to Keep People Moving TM
A Marmon Group/Berkshire Hathaway Company
Founded in 1990 by a core group of transit professionals, the IMPulse product history dates back to 1888 through the Ohio Brass and Cheatham Companies. Today, IMPulse is the largest U.S. manufacturer of overhead contact system (OCS and Catenary) hardware for the mass transit industry. IMPulse’s overhead electrification products range from 600 volt DC to 25kV AC applications covering vintage trolley, electric trolleybus, streetcar, light rail, heavy commuter rail, electrified mining & freight lines, and high‐speed rail. The primary market is North America and Mexico, with products supplied to New Zealand, Korea, Chile and Italy.
The IMPulse product line covers all OCS components and assemblies, including detailed installation and maintenance instructions. All products and manufacturing processes follow the strict ISO 9001:2008 quality management system as certified by UL DQS.
The time tested, safety proven, quality products have been in service with most transit agencies throughout the U.S., Canada and Mexico. The IMPulse Trans*Lite insulator (a critical OCS component) has proven to be the most reliable, effective and sought after strain and strut insulator on the market (often copied, but never proven to meet the same long term strength capabilities). All products are designed to strict safety requirements, including in‐house design testing (tensile tester able to test up to 200,000 lbs. / 890 kn), and all Trans*Lite insulators are 100% proof tested to the rated load, plus design/destruct tested for every 100 pieces in production.
In addition, IMPulse can provide a wide range of insulator products, including the original No‐Bo section insulator, the Dirigo Spool and Strain insulators, J‐B Strain insulators, Messenger Saddles and a variety of caps & cones. We have a full complement of electric trolleybus (ETB) fittings, frogs, crossings, curve segments, as needed for every type of application. If you need a draw, vertical lift, bascule, swing bridge application, we have the product. The IMPulse Door Bridge has proven to be the most robust and reliable system that is easily adaptable to a variety of different door types and movements. For light rail, commuter rail and high‐speed rail applications, the extensive IMPulse line can accommodate extreme reach cantilever assemblies, tunnel arms, cross‐spans, different pole types and structures. Our pole banding material is easy to install, readjust, remove and relocate, if necessary. The balance weight and counter‐weight assemblies use a highly reliable, non‐binding pulley assembly with easy to maintain high tension bearings that are specifically designed for OCS application and temperature change movements. Weights can be provided in single piece, inside/outside pole and in small individual stack‐plates. IMPulse can provide pre‐assembly and special packaging of components. We deal directly with the foundry and galvanizer to obtain the best price and turn‐around time for delivery. The Engineering and Drafting department tailors each customer’s design and submittal process to meet the needs of the project. We provide in‐house Professional Engineer review of every project and can provide State certification when needed. Project orders are available with a detailed Operation and Maintenance Manual. In addition, we can provide on‐site training for product service and maintenance. Our experience gained from many years of product design and application, along with involvement in many different projects and with different agencies, has enabled our Research and Development department to offer updated designs based on best practices, where we look at ways to reduce field installation and maintenance cost. We also address and satisfy specific customer requirements from torque/bending issues to chemical contaminants (de‐icing). When it comes to OCS (catenary and single contact wire) hardware for any electrified transit system, IMPulse is your first choice for best value over the long term.
