Alaska's Mount McKinley isn't what it used to be
1) What is the tallest
orth America's tallest mountain isn't as tall as once thought.
mountain in the Americas?
When its elevation was calculated in 1952, Mount McKinley topped
out at 20,320 feet. But a 2012 survey by Alaska's Statewide Digital
Mapping Initiative used new radar technology and found that the mountain
is just 20,237 feet.
"That's 83 feet shorter than we thought," said Mead Treadwell, Alaska's
lieutenant governor, when he announced the new height in September.
"The good news is: Denali is still the tallest peak in North America."
(Mount McKinley is also known as Denali, which means "the high one"
in an Alaskan Native American language.)
Where does McKinley rank among the world's tallest mountains?
This map shows the Seven Summits, the tallest peaks on each continent.
Mountain climbers prefer to count Oceania's tallest mountain, instead of
Australia's, as one of the seven, so we've
included it on our map as well.
