Clown School
Cowboy Bunkhouse
Reading Passage 2
There was a powerful smell in the cowboy
bunkhouse. Flowers sprouted from the couch,
and there was rusty brown powder on the mousetraps.
“Yep,” Cowboy Bill shouted over the rowdy cowboys.
“It is time for a good spring scouring.”
The other cowboys pouted. “Housework makes us
grouchy,” they said. But they put the flowers into
flowerpots and swept the mousetraps outside.
“Good,” said Cowboy Bill. “However,
something still smells sour.” He gave
each cowboy a bar of soap. “Go
downstream and take a shower!”
The cowboys ran howling, “Last one
in is a clown!” And after an hour,
they came out as sweet as flowers.

One cloudy day, Miss Kit went downstairs in her
nightgown. Her tummy was growling loudly.
“I could devour a sow, snout and all!” Miss Kit said.
However, her pantry did not have even a mouthful of
food.
“What can I do?” Miss Kit said, frowning. Then her
nose found a good smell. It came from outside. It came
from the county fair.
She put on her new outfit and went downhill and
downtown. It began to rain. It was a real downpour,
but she found the fairground just the same.
At the fair, Miss Kit ate four hot dogs, a brownie, and
some chowder. “Mmmm,” she said,
proudly. “Our townspeople
make the best chow!”
