MUMBAI: Stocks took
some time out to catch their
breath on Wednesday after
the Sensex closed lower and
the Nifty retreated from its
life high amid caution ahead
of US Federal Reserve's
policy meeting outcome.
Of late, the hawkish comments from policymakers,
including Chairman Janet
Yellen, have helped firm up
expectations that a rate increase is on the horizon.
In such a case, investors
pull out money from emerging markets, causing stocks
to underperform.
IT stocks continued to
slide, dragged down by a
stronger rupee, which rallied
to a fresh 16-month high of
65.69. Software exporters
earn much of their revenues
in dollar from the US and
Europe.

Printing of new
Rs 500, Rs 2,000
notes costs
Rs 2.87 to Rs 3.77
NEW DELHI: The cost of
printing a new Rs 500 currency note is in the range of
Rs 2.87 to Rs 3.09, and Rs
3.54 to Rs 3.77 for a Rs 2,000
note, Parliament was informed on Wednesday.
"The approximate cost of
printing each note of new Rs
500 currency note is in the
range of Rs 2.87 to Rs 3.09
and for a Rs 2,000 note is Rs
3.54 to Rs 3.77," Minister of
State for Finance Arjun Ram
Meghwal said here in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha.
The minister, however,
said that it was too early to
indicate the total cost of
printing of new notes of Rs
500 and Rs 2,000, as those
were still being printed.
The currency in circulation as on February 24 was
Rs 11.641 lakh crore, Meghwal said.
The old Rs 500 and Rs
1,000 notes returned to the
Reserve Bank of India and
currency chests amounted
to Rs 12.44 lakh crore, as of
December 10, 2016. (IANS)

29,398.11, down 44.52
points, or 0.15 per cent. The
30-share index, which had
advanced 540.69 points in
the previous three sessions,
hit over a 2-year high on
Tuesday on the strong
showing of the BJP in Uttar
Pradesh.
The 50-scrip NSE barometer retreated from its record
high touched yesterday to
end at 9,084.80, a fall of 2.20
points, or 0.02 per cent.
"With the rupee continuing to strengthen, IT remained a drag on Indian equities. There was also apprehension ahead of FOMC
rate decision, but that did
not deter investors, who
were buoyed by the recent
surge in prices," said Anand
James, Chief Market Strategist, Geojit Financial Services.
Inflation proved to be a
dampener too. CPI inflation
rose to 4-month high of 3.65
per cent in February and
that of wholesale prices shot
up to a 39-month high of
6.55 per cent, spoiling hopes
of a rate cut by the Reserve
Bank at its next meeting in
April.
Some Asian indices trended lower following losses on
the Wall Street because of
mounting anxiety about
Federal Reserve decision.
Foreign funds bought a
staggering net Rs 4,087.89
crore on Tuesday, showed
the provisional figures. IT,
technology, oil and gas
shares saw fresh selling. But
realty, auto, consumer durables, metal and bank remained on the buyer's list.
Meanwhile, Moody's Investors Service on Wednesday said the BJP's thumping victory in Uttar Pradesh
and substantial gains in other states will lead to more reforms as the ruling party
inches closer to a majority
in the Upper House.
TCS, Infosys, Hindustan
Unilever, Wipro, Coal India,
ONGC, PowerGrid, Asian
Paints, ICICI Bank, Lupin,
L&T, NTPC and GAIL came
under pressure and lost up
to 2.42 per cent.
However, Tata Steel,
Hero MotoCorp, RIL, SBI,
Tata Motors, HDFC Bank,
Adani Ports and HDFC
made headway that capped
the losses.
Idea Cellular climbed 9.56
per cent on speculative
buying amid reports of tower business sale. MRF Ltd
zoomed 7.66 per cent to
close at an all-time high,
powered by persistent fall in
raw material prices. Other
tyre makers such as Ceat,
TVS Srichakra, JK Tyres,
Apollo Tyres and Goodyear
India too advanced significantly.
The BSE IT sector index
fell the most by losing 1.81
per cent, followed by technology and oil and gas.
The broader markets
continued to remain bullish.
The mid-cap and small-cap
indices both rose. European shares traded higher in
their early session.
The Sensex heatmap was
split down the middle, with
15 scrips ending lower and
15 higher. The market
breadth remained positive
as 1,426 shares advanced,
1,384 slumped while 187
ruled steady. The total turnover on BSE rose to Rs
54,337.25 crore, from Rs
4,677.92 crore in the previous session. (PTI)
‘RBI should not cut interest rates’
NEW DELHI: With an increase in both wholesale
and retail inflation indices in
February indicating that India has left behind the
"most benign part of retail
inflation", an expert has
suggested that the RBI
should postpone further
cuts in interest rates.
Official data on Tuesday
showed the annual rate of
inflation based on wholesale prices rose to over a
three-year high of 6.55 per
cent in February owing to
costlier food and fuel -- up
from 5.25 per cent in the previous month.
Similarly, February's retail
inflation edged up to a four-
month high of 3.65 per cent
from 3.17 per cent reported
for the previous month.
"I think the most benign
part of retail inflation is behind us. GST (Goods and
Services Tax) is a potential
spoiler," Abhijit Sen, economist and former member of
the Planning Commission,
which was disbanded in
2014, told BTVi in an interview.
"There is a probability,
increasingly being forecast
by various agencies all
across the world that we
might actually end up with
El-Nino this year, and if that
happens early, it would be a
major spoiler.
"The RBI would be well
advised not to cut interest
rate any further. But simply
wait.. the chances are it's (inflation) not going to go
above 5 per cent.
In connection with GST,
the Central Board of Excise
and Customs (CBEC) has
said that taxes were likely to
"increase a bit" from the
current level.
The RBI has said that it
is looking at inflation ranging between 4.5-5 per cent
in the latter half of the current fiscal.
On the issue of farm loan
waivers, Sen said such a
move would be "disastrous"
for the banking system.
"This was a definite election promise. It's not just
BJP, everybody else is making this promise. It's coming
at a time when banks are in
a much worse position," he
said.
"Even in 2009, my advice
to the government then had
been don't have, for moral
hazard reasons, across the
board waiver, have a much
more easier but a regulated
one-time settlement policy.
"It would be disastrous
at this point for the morale
of the banking system, for
the credibility of the banking system to have a across
the board loan waiver," Sen
added. (IANS)
Centre unveils
scheme involving
states to create
export infra
NEW DELHI: The central
government on Wednesday
launched the Trade Infrastructure for Export Scheme
(TIES) for creation of export
infrastructure in the country through a scheme that
involves the Centre and the
states on a participatory
basis.
Announcing the scheme
here, Commerce Minister
Nirmala Sitharaman said
TIES is focused on addressing the needs of exporters
thorugh the creation of
common facilities.
"If a state government
wants to have infrastructure
like border haats, land customs stations, quality testing and certification labs or
SEZs (Special Economic
Zones), this scheme is to facilitate it on a participatory
basis," Sitharaman told reporters here.
The scheme would run
from the next fiscal 2017-18.
To be funded by the Centre in the form of grants-inaid, the scheme would have
a total budgetary support of
Rs 600 crore, with an annual
outlay of Rs 200 crore,
Sitharaman said.
"The participation is on
a 50:50 basis between the
Centre and the states, with
a top cap of Rs 20 crore per
project on the Centre's contribution and a project cap
of Rs 40 crore," she said.
"Only for projects in the
Northeast and hilly states
can this grant go up to 80
per cent of the total equity,"
she added. (IANS)

‘Employees’ retirement
planning needs attention’
NEW DELHI: In order to move towards a
pensioned society, India will require a systemic approach for designing a coherent
pension system, a FICCI-KPMG white paper said on Wednesday.
The 2011 Census showed that only 12
per cent of the Indian working population
(i.e. approximately 58 million) are covered
under any pension plan.
"This translates into the challenge of
only a small portion of the Indian working
population being protected against old-age
income insecurity. A combination of aging
population and low pension penetration
makes it imperative for policymakers to pay
urgent attention to the challenge of providing income security after retirement," the
paper said.
The white paper has been produced
jointly by industry body Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry
(FICCI) and consultancy firm KPMG.
The population projections suggest that
the elderly residents (aged 60 and above)
will triple from 2010 to 2050, taking the
number of elderly to 331 million in India by
2050.
For the white paper, the KPMG conducted an Employer Pension Plans Survey this
year to have an overview of the pension
plans from company representatives from
industrial markets, IT/BPO, automotive,
healthcare, financial services and consumer markets, among others. (IANS)

VASCO (GOA): Punjab and Mizoram played out a goalless draw that did both of their chances no harm at the
Tilak Maidan in Vasco on Wednesday. Playing their first
game in the tournament, Mizoram would have been
happy with a point in their first game while for Punjab,
after a win in their opening game, a draw in this game
consolidated second place in the group and they remain in contention for a semi-final berth.
Drivers of Afghanistan-bound trucks wait for the opening of Pakistan Afghanistan
border outside Peshawar on Tuesday. The closure of the border between Pakistan
and Afghanistan, blamed on deteriorating relations, is both inconvenient and
costly. Officials on both sides of the border say in just one month the closure
has resulted in hundreds of thousands of dollars in lost trade and tons
of perishable goods have rotted in stranded trucks. (PTI)

beaten 2-1 in the first leg of
the last 16 tie, Leicester
roared back to win 2-0 in
Tuesday's return leg, sending them into Friday's lasteight draw.
Shakespeare, promoted
following Claudio Ranieri's
dismissal, feels the feat
stands "right up there" with
last season's fairytale Premier League title win and
said there could be more
miracles still to come.
Barcelona, Real Madrid,
Bayern Munich are among
the teams who have already
reached the quarter-finals,
but Shakespeare said he
had no preference regarding
Leicester's next opponents.
Asked if there was a team
he was hoping to come up
against, he smiled and replied simply: "No."
Ranieri had been sitting
in the away dug-out for
Leicester's defeat in the first
leg three weeks ago, only to
be dismissed by the club's
Thai owners upon his return
to England.
The away goal scored by
Jamie Vardy at the Ramon
Sanchez Pizjuan sowed the
seeds of Leicester's second-
Champions League
leg revival and Shakespeare
acknowledged Ranieri's
role. "Claudio will always be
fondly remembered by everyone at this football club
for what he achieved and
helped us achieve," Shakespeare told reporters in the
King Power Stadium press
room. "The performance in
the first leg, when Claudio
was in charge, gave us the
springboard for the result
tonight."
Meanwhile, Juventus
coasted into the Champions
League quarter-finals with a
1-0 win over Porto after a
first-half penalty and red
card ended the Portuguese
side's lingering hopes of a
comeback.
Paulo Dybala converted
the penalty three minutes
before the break to complete
a 3-0 aggregate win for the
Serie A side after Porto defender Maximiliano Pereira
blocked Gonzalo Higuain's
goalbound shot with his
arm and was sent off.
The defeat put a dampener an historic evening for
Porto goalkeeper Iker Casillas who made a record 175th
appearance in European
competition, overhauling
Paulo Maldini's total.

MUMBAI: India defender
Arnab Mondal believes that
if the national team does well
in the AFC Asian Cup qualifiers it will give a major boost
to football in the country.
"The more we perform
well, it is better for the coming generation (of players).
If we play these matches
(AFC Asian Cup qualifiers)
well, it is better for Indian
football," Arnab told reporters here on Wednesday.
Mondal is in the camp, in
progress at the Andheri
Sports Complex here, for the
probables for the March 22
friendly against Cambodia
in Phnom Penh followed by
the March 28 AFC Asian
Cup qualifier against Myanmar in Yangoon.
"We don't getter more
matches. If we perform well
(in the AFC Asian Cup qualifiers), it will be good for the
future players and also for
us in the team. It will be vital
for us," the 27-year-old
player added.
Asked if the Indian team
is ready to take the next step
and qualify for the tournament proper, he said, "This
is the reason we practised
for so may year and do hard
work. I have belief in the
team that we will be able to
qualify via the qualifiers".
India have been clubbed
in Group A with Kyrgyzstan,
Myanmar and Macau.
On whether the draw is

Federer, Nadal win to set up
early showdown at Indian Wells
Sania-Barbara crash out
INDIAN WELLS: Roger Federer edged Steve Johnson
7-6 (3), 7-6 (4) in a hard-serving duel at the BNP Paribas
Open, setting up a fourthround match against Rafael
Nadal. Federer fired 12 aces
- his fastest serve registering 131 mph - and never
faced a break point against
Johnson, who reached 136
on the radar gun and fought
off all four break points
against him.
Nadal advanced with a 63, 7-5 win against 26thseeded Fernando Verdasco
for his 50th career victory at
the desert tournament,
where he's won three titles
but none since 2013.
Five-time Indian Wells
winner Novak Djokovic defeated 2013 finalist Juan
Martin del Potro 7-5, 4-6, 61 and next faces Nick Kyrgios in the same quarter of
the draw as Federer and
Nadal.
On the women's side, No.
2 seed Angelique Kerber
lost to 14th-seeded Elena
Vesnina 6-3, 6-3 in the fourth
round. Kerber is assured of
retaking the No. 1 ranking
from injured Serena Williams
next week.
Federer is a four-time
champion at Indian Wells
who won his last title in
2012. He defeated Nadal in
the Australian Open final in
January for his record 18th
Grand Slam title. Their meeting on Wednesday will be
the earliest they have
played since their first match
in 2004 at Miami, where
Nadal won.
"Because it's early in the
tournament, I think we both
don't quite yet know to 100
percent how everything
feels," Federer said. "There
is a bit of the unknown,
which is exciting maybe for
the fans to see how we're
going to try to figure that
part out."
Federer hit 32 winners
against Johnson, including
a forehand volley that
earned him a mini-break in
the first set tiebreaker. He
won five of the next six
points and closed out the set

Johnson held at 6-all to
force the second tiebreaker
and fell behind 4-2. He
broke Federer for a 4-all tie
before Federer won on his
second match point when
Johnson netted a backhand.
Meanwhile, India's Sania
Mirza and her women's doubles partner Barbara Strycova crashed out of the BNP
Paribas Open after going
down in straight sets in the
quarter-finals here.
The Indo-Czech pair,
who had won the Cincinnati Open and Toray Pan Pacific Open last year, suffered
a 4-6, 4-6 loss against Switzerland's Martina Hingis and
Taiwan's Yung-jan Chan in
the quarter-final match that
lasted an hour and 20 minutes here. (Agencies)

The East Bengal player

South Africa buoyed as New Zealand lose Boult
WELLINGTON: New Zealand bowling spearhead Trent
Boult has been ruled out of the second Test starting in
Wellington on Thursday, lifting South Africa's chances of
going one up in the series.
Boult pulled up lame during South Africa's second innings in the drawn first Test in Dunedin to be the second
senior player to be sidelined after Ross Taylor suffered a
calf tear.
Neither side had finalised their line up on Wednesday
for what should be a seam-friendly Basin Reserve wicket,
but South African captain Faf du Plessis said the absence
of Boult and Taylor would hurt New Zealand.
"If you lose two key players like that you definitely feel
you're a little bit light," he said.
"For a new (batsman) coming in it's important for us to
put pressure on him and not make him feel comfortable.
From a bowling perspective Boult is a huge loss."
With the first Test drawn, Wellington is effectively the
start of a two-Test series which du Plessis said heightened the need to get a result.
"When it comes to a two-match series you have to be a
little bit more street smart because it can go both ways,"
he said.
"You go 1-0 down in the series there's no coming back
from that so it's getting yourself in a position where you
can try and make sure you win."
Although the team's have not been announced, Boult's
long-time new-ball partner Tim Southee, who was dropped
for the Dunedin Test, confirmed he was back in the side.
"I'll come in for Boulty, a straight swap for Trent who
will unfortunately miss this one," Southee said, adding
the balance of the side was still being debated despite the
green wicket. (AFP)

Players floored as Aussie
game turns ugly
SYDNEY: A cricket match in country Australia has
turned ugly with a batsman shoulder-barging a celebrating bowler, knocking him over and sparking an onfield
clash. The incident, which has gone viral online, came
just days after cricket's law-makers, the Marylebone
Cricket Club, announced new rules to penalise bad onfield behaviour. Footage from the incident last weekend
shows a paceman for Yackandandah in Victoria state
running towards the Eskdale batsman after bowling him
out. The celebration wasn't appreciated with the batsman
dropping his shoulder into him, knocking him to the
ground. That prompted a fielder to charge at the batsman
and push him over with fellow fielders rushing in to
break up the melee. (AFP)
last 16 tie in Portugal three
weeks ago when Porto also
played the second half with
10 men after Alex Telles was
dismissed for two bookable
offences.
"There will always be a
doubt as to whether it would
have been different with
eleven players," said Porto
coach Nuno Espirito Santo.
"It's not right for a team
to be penalised twice, first
with a penalty and then a red
card." Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri was not
entirely satisfied. "We need
to improve the quality of our
football which in the second
half left a lot to be desired,"
he said.
"The result isn't everything." Porto, backed by a
noisy contingent of fans
who kept singing until the
final whistle, had some early
pressure without seriously
testing Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon.
Juve attacked in fits and
starts and Mario Mandzukic had their first real effort
with a powerful downward
header which Casillas did
well to hold. Porto's hopes
of becoming the first team
to claw back a 2-0 deficit
away from home in a Champions League knockout
stage tie ended at a Juventus corner. (Agencies)
